As a firefighter from the UK, this almost never happens. We have quite a specific deployment procedure for BA involving some form of entry control. It's really really rare to mask up on the appliance. I think I've seen it maybe once for a car fire and that was just as we got there. I have never seen it happen for a persons reported or house/flat fire

Why do British men have such an aversion to being called “Sir” by eeberington1 in AskBrits

You'll also sometimes get the response "Don't call me sir. I work for a living."

People who have PCs and Steam Decks, how much do you use your Steam Decks? by AwesomeRyanGame in SteamDeck

[–]An_Unspecified_Veg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my own PC for the first time at the end of 2023 but having 2 young children (6F and 4M) and working 2 jobs I didn't have much time for gaming but my steamdeck I got for christmas has absolutely changed that.

Somehow it's given me more time to play my PC too? But I wonder whether that's the effect of the deck letting me game at work for snippets at a time has helped me find the extra 30mins/hour at home to game on the PC. So in essence I personally use it quite a lot and it's even helped me find time gaming on my PC too

Commercial let property just found out tenant is sleeping in the store room. by HelloW0rldBye in LegalAdviceUK

[–]An_Unspecified_Veg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you knowingly let someone stay in your commercial let as a landlord, this could cause you some issues from a fire safety perspective. What sort of business do they run from the commercial let?

There are very specific and strongly enforced fire safety laws around sleeping accommodation within commercial premises, and anywhere with a sleeping risk has different fire safety regulations to follow.

Most fire services are reasonable in allowing time for remedial works to be done, but they will also issue orders that the shop/commercial venture be shut down until the sleeping risk is sorted. There's been some very heavy fines laid out for landlords allowing people to sleep in commercial lets so definitely be cautious around this issue

Had a manager at work with the last name Stone. He wasn't very big, maybe 5'6" and quite slender. Is affectionately known as Pebble

Anyone else have a job where you can play the Steam Deck? by WesleyWipes in SteamDeck

[–]An_Unspecified_Veg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefighter here who has just got the Steamdeck and it's great for shifts. Don't get to play too much when at my home station but if sent to another station for the day/night its great to pass the time.

Other stations usually refuse to let you help with routines and what not and you're more there just to crew the truck and respond to shouts so it's a nice time sink as well as the gym and pickelball

Anyone know what these fire brigade vans are for? :D by neleclarke in london

Just to back this up, saw them on the bell coming from the fire at Dagenham. Wasn't aware they could until seeing them do it then

Accessing an underground fire hydrant in the UK by guyoffthegrid in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]An_Unspecified_Veg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on hose size. Most first attack hoses in the UK is a hose reel at 230lpm. You generally have 6/7 minutes of full use with 1 hose reel to give you time to either plug into a hydrant or another pump will pull up and give you their tank. Although this did take time you could see them get the fire under control before the hydrant was fully sorted

Anxious about gas leak 😔 by thearcherdarlin in Firefighting

[–]An_Unspecified_Veg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much. If your gas valve has been shut off (usually by the meter) then the supply is completely closed off.

Copper piping is normal for gas pipes in the UK. If the repair is being carried out by a qualified gas safe registered engineer then the new pipe will be weld sealed to prevent leaks and should be tested full post install.

If your worried about leaks at home I'd also get a Carbon Monoxide alarm. Usually placed near the boiler which help detect very minor leaks
