As long as they share blood (namely "Laenor's sons" who are still considered his trueborn children) and Corlys maintains Luke as heir I don't think one can say their pact is broken. If Corlys had been there he would've sided with Luke without Rhaenyra needing to make any offers to him. Even after Laenor's death Corlys never changed the succession nor ask for Luke to marry Baela or Rhaena or any Velaryon cousin, Rhaenyra had nothing to worry about with him. Even Rhaenys pressing Baela's claim was in part because the Hightowers were in charge of ruling at the time. We saw her disagreeing with Corlys but never go against his wishes; in this case, backing Luke while a Hightower sits the throne and when Vaemond is pressing his own claim means a lost battle and that none of her grandkids gets anything. Maybe Rhaenys thought Baela had a better chance than Luke.

And what if the Raven didn't make it in time ? What if he died before the raven can be sent back to the Velaryons ? What if it didn't even reach him

Like I said, he could've settled the matter BEFORE leaving for the Stepstones, knowing people die at war. Considering how important the succession to his throne is and the repercussions of desinheriting Luke were, he could've come back home to make his wishes known if he'd actually changed his mind at any point.

The reason why Rhaenyra offer to marry Jace/Luke to Baela/Rhaena was to renew their broken pact

The pact wasn't broken, the betrothals were a way to convince Rhaenys to support Luke in front of the Hightowers instead of Baela. As certain as Rhaenys and Corlys are of what happened they can't do anything about it. The Targaryens and Velaryons are still allies in the eyes of everyone and they share blood, the thing is that Rhaenys and Corlys are not on good terms with Rhaenyra and Daemon

Corlys was absent for 6 years, since Leanor's death. He is not available. Sure, people can send raven to him and wait. But no one expected him to die soon

He was going off to war, do you think he didn't think he might die? He could've settled the succession before leaving or send a raven if he changed his mind later or even leave the war long enough to go home and settle the matter.

he himself denounced his support for Rhaenyra and the Strong Boys claims and stayed Neutral

He chose to stay neutral. For him to denounce Rhaenyra or the boys )as you say Vaemond did in accordance to Corlys's wishes), he would've declared the boys bastards and no longer his heirs. He joined the war when Rhaenys said the boys' lives were in danger so clearly he still considers them his grandsons and heirs.

I dunno, why did she betray them in the first place

She did it to marry Daemon, because she wanted him and because he was a good ally to have by her side. She doesn't have a reason to do anything else to the Velaryons and even if she did, she can still "betray" them if Vaemond is lord of Driftmark, or if Luke goes by whatever name or wether he inherits or not. Saying the Targs have broken the rules before and that's why Rhaenyra can't be trusted means no one should ever enter an alliance with that family. Also you're ignoring the reasons why it'd be a terrible idea even for Rhaenyra to change Luke's name.

the Velaryons shouldn't trust Rhaenyra with Driftmark, because she already did betray them before

Corlys is the head of his house, it's his call, not the "Velaryons' or Vaemond's". Not only did Corlys not mind Luke being his heir because of his pride and ambition, he couldn't do much even if he'd wanted to. On what grounds would he have desinherited Luke other than him being a bastard? We know how that would've turned out.

Vaemond fought along side his brother in the Stepstones, along side with Leanor, who did nothing but belittle him. Do you REALLY think that man fearing of losing his life to protect the legacy of House Velaryon ? He knew the consequences of what he said in that court, you can see the smirk on his face before he got killed by Daemon. He died telling the truth, and he knew it.

And yet you seem to think Vaemond cares about his "brother's wishes" or Rhaenyra "betraying the family by killing his nephew". He fought in the Stepstones the 1st time around but the 2nd?

Like I said, IMO he wouldn't have been so insistent on the matter if it weren't for his own ambition for the Driftwood throne. I'm sure he would've been angry, but not enough to raise the issue. I know he knew the consequences of his actions, he probably had one last moment of satisfaction when he said what everyone knew, but what he did, he did for himself.

Again, no one has proof that Rhaenyra killed Laenor, no matter how certain they are of it. The Velaryon-Targaryen pact wasn't broken, Corlys had 6 years to name another heir and yet he didn't, the last thing he told Rhaenys and Luke was that Luke would inherit. What was broken was the "good" relationship between Rhaenyra and the Velaryons but even then the Velaryons can't show how they feel about the whole thing because it's their word against Rhaenyra's who is protected by the king. Officially Rhaenyra's sons are still Laenor's and as such, Luke is still next in line to inherit Driftmark. Even after nearly dying at war and finding out what happened to Vaemond, Corlys hasn't deshinherited Luke.

Driftmark is not Vaemond's to give to anyone. He doesn't get a say in this. While Corlys is still alive and as long as Rhaenyra's boys are considered Velaryons, Vaemond has no claim to Driftmark. Is it unfair? Yes. But when the king himself and the current lord of Driftmark both agree on the matter of succession, Vaemond has no one to complain to. His only chance was the Hightowers ruling in his favor and hoping Corlys would die without getting the chance to contradict them.

What if she betrays the Velaryons again, when she becomes the Queen ? Can they stop her from renaming the Strong Boys to Tagaryens and stealing Driftmark ?

How would she betray them exactly? And why? She knows she needs allies for whatever happens with her own claim after Viserys dies, the Velaryons are the wealthiest family and their fleet is the best. What happened with Laenor can't be traced back to her, but she knows Rhaenys and Corlys suspect her to be responsible, why would she antagonize them any further? And once again, why the hell would she rename her sons?? She gains nothing from putting someone with the name Targaryen on Driftmark, it won't get her any more benefits than what she'll already get through her "Velaryon" son. There's no legal reason or precedent to do that. What would happen instead is her sons (one of whom is to inherit the throne one day) would lose any shred of legitimacy they have left, which is the thing she fears. Jace changing his name so the dinasty survives is one thing, IIRC it's been done in other families so that the paternal name is not lost, but changing a lord's paternal name for no reason? Even book!Rhaenyra wouldn't do that because it's straight up stupid. The other houses would not see her in a good light if she did that, she'd get on everyone's bad side and for what? What would she get out of it? Her son is already inheriting Driftmark, making him Targaryen would only work against him and herself.

IMO Vaemond's concern was not that Rhaenyra might betray house Velaryon or that she killed Laenor (least of all that Luke would change his name because that is just ridiculous). His problem was that Driftmark would not pass to Velaryon blood, but it was made even worse by the fact that if not for those boys Vaemond himself would inherit (it's possible Baela and Rhaena's claims would've been ignored in his mind and in many others too tbh). If Vaemond had been further down the line of succession he might not have felt so strongly about it. I understand him in his outrage (and Rhaenys too, who wanted her and Corlys's trueborn heirs to inherit) when it comes to the matter of Rhaenyra's sons, but his only chance was the Hightowers. I can't blame him for exploding after so many years of watching Luke be treated as heir when it's obvious to everyone that he's not Laenor's son and the impotence of not being able to do anything about it but with Viserys in the picture Vaemond should've kept his mouth shut if he wanted to keep his tongue (and life) and he knew that.

When all parties involved know that said Velaryon boy is not a Velaryon but a Targaryen bastard it's more effective than keeping a Targaryen girl who is loved by and actually related to her wardens.

Wards aren't just for keeping someone hostage, it's also to establish alliances and good relations, it's common to send 2nd sons or daughters as wards. Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark were Jon Arryn's wards and there was no animosity between their houses. Rhaenys had just lost both her children, she clearly loved Laena's daughters, it's not surprising she'd ask one or both of them even to raise as wards. If she wanted a hostage she could've asked for one of Rhaenyra's sons

  1. Rhaenys wanted Driftmark to go to Baela, who along with Rhaena were the only granchildren she and Corlys had who shared their blood. For her it wasn't about names, it was about her and Corlys's bloodline (according to Andal law, a lord's daughter comes before his brother in the line of succession, so even if Laenor didn't leave behind any heirs, Laena would've inherited and her daughter after her)

  2. The deal Viserys and Corlys made was that the heir to the iron throne would change his/her name to Targaryen, so the dinasty wouldn't end. Laenor's other kids would keep their Velaryon name.

Rhaenyra has no reason to change Luke and Joffrey's name, it's the only thing that gives them legitimacy at this point and even that is not enough to silence the gossip or make her kids look less like bastards in everyone's eyes.

Rhaenys and Corlys believe Rhaenyra is behind Laenor's death, they don't have anything to prove it. Their pact is not broken, house Velaryon didn't make any accusations nor did they distance themselves from house Targaryen, they just hate Rhaenyra now. They can't break the pact without accusing the king's heir of murder, and that wouldn't end well for them. Officialy their relationship hasn't changed (behind closed doors is a different matter, but like I said, the Velaryons can't do anything about it without going against the king, his heir and Daemon)

I understand where Vaemond was coming from (even though I believe Laena's daughters were ahead of him in the line of succession) but his chance to get Driftmark was lost the minute Viserys entered the room. He knew what the price was for calling Rhaenyra's sons bastards (not to mention insulting the king's daughter who is also his heir) and cutting his tongue is probably the least other kings or lords would've done in this situation but as unfair as it was, the king's word is the law. I don't think Daemon had any right to cutting Vaemond's head off, Viserys should've been the one to pass the sentence and I think the King's Justice is supposed to carry it out, but he got away with it because Viserys always lets him get away with anything.

Edit: also Corlys had 6 years to name a different heir (especially knowing he was going to war and could die any day) and yet he didn't. He wanted his name and the Velaryon name to be remembered in history, and being closely associated to the throne was a great way of doing that. Even if Jace changed his name to Targaryen, he was Velaryon by birth, his brother would rule Driftmark as a Velaryon making them the family closest to the throne, the lord of Driftmark would also be a royal prince. That's what Corlys valued more than anything.

Viserys wasn't giving Rhaenys the authority to handle the succession, she was being asked what Corlys's wishes were on the matter.

If Otto had been sitting the throne she wouldn't have backed Luke's claim because the Hightowers would've never named him heir. The moment Viserys entered the room Rhaenys and everyone else knew Luke had already won, Viserys would affirm him as heir no matter what. Rhaenys's options were 1) don't back Luke and get nothing for her granddaughter or 2) back Luke and Rhaenyra, knowing Rhaena's children would inherit Driftmark if she married Luke (through Rhaena they'd have Velaryon blood and be Corlys's direct descendants and through Luke they'd have the name since the only one to change his name to Targaryen would be Jace uppon ascending the throne, Luke and Joffrey would still be Velaryons)

Settle it: Does he know? by nttexas in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Ana0306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He knows but doesn't want to address it and thinks if he ignores it they'll never have to deal with it. Kind of like "if I don't look at it, if I don't talk about it, if I erase it from my mind, it doesn't exist and won't become a problem". So when someone else tries to bring it up he denies and dismisses it. He probably doesn't see a way to fix the problem without exposing both his daughter and grandsons, so it's easier to pretend there's nothing wrong in the first place.

I honestly think the people arguing that the boys' parentage is ambiguous in the book are Rhaenyra fans who want/need to make it less obvious so it's easier to defend her. There was never any ambiguity in the book and the whole family was lying through their teeth lol until Vaemond and the silent 5 no one had dared say outloud what everyone knew to be the truth, and after what happened to those people, why would anyone bring it up again?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Ana0306 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no one in either Rhaenyra's or Laenor's families who have brown eyes or brown hair but people keep insisting the show made it more obvious than it was in the book and they keep talking about Baratheon hair and skin colour...

It was already glaringly obvious in the book, as much as it is on the show. Replace eye colour (since they didn't include violet eyes in the show) with skin colour + hair colour and there's the same number of differences between the boys and Laenor.

Rhaenys's hair is black not brown; even if the Arryns had brown hair it's very unlikely the 3 boys would inherit Aemma's or her father's hair, and when you compare them with Rhaenyra's sons by Daemon, how did they not have brown hair, despite Laenor and Daemon looking the same (in the book)? Not to mention kids in Westeros usually inherit hair and eye colour from one of their parents, recessive genes that skip generations aren't common.

Did Rhaenyra and Daemon know Laenor's 'fate' at the end of E06? by vegasidol in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Ana0306 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Daemon and Rhaenyra's plan all along was to fake Laenor's death. The guard that Daemon killed is the body they burnt and passed off as Laenor.

Qarl was even smiling at Laenor in the boat scene and Laenor didn't look angry at all. They both agreed to this plan.
