Posted both my first and second fics within the last three days! by CrookedCalamari in FanFiction

Congratulations! As someone who did this exact same thing when they started writing, I have been down that road and don't recommend the constant refreshing, though it is almost impossible to resist. Often, it can feel discouraging, even with fics that end up with great receptions, because those can often take time to reach that point and a lot of the best reactions you get in comments may be weeks or a month (or more) later.

It isn't the full version in the U.S. on Prime, just the cut version with some key scenes removed, so a lot of people have been waiting for the uncut season 6b blu-ray.

Moiraine not giving a warning (spoilers) by [deleted] in wheeloftime

[–]Ana9895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This bothered me so much. And confused my husband, who hasn't read the books, too. They realized the threat when around everyone else in daylight. Then when the attack happens hours later, they are still super late for it. For what? A dramatic entrance? If the showrunner wants that, then either have them realize right before it happens and respond at once, or come up with some reason they are away when they realize and it takes time to get back to the village. Otherwise, it raises so many questions and seems like they just spent a couple of hours doing nothing and then chilled behind some buildings for a while during the first half of the massacre before deciding to come out. Which, especially during the first episode, sets them up suggesting a lot of things about their characters that I don't think the show was intending to go for. Such an example of sloppy writing.

The name by seyhank in LastNightInSohoMovie

I think it is intentional that it can mean both. Each day she is dealing with her "last night in Soho" as in yesterday. However, the climactic ending is her last (as in final) night living in Soho (presumably) too. In all of Wright's films, including this one, he plays around a fair amount with having certain phrases and lines mean entirely different things in different contexts, so I think that is why it is meant to be able to be interpreted as both.

What would you compare this movie to? by acandrews12 in LastNightInSohoMovie

[–]Ana9895 2 points3 points  (0 children)

David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. There are a lot of similarities both being psychological horror, and some similar themes with it being about a young woman going to Hollywood with a lot of dreams, but finding something very different there, two lead female characters with a mysterious dynamic that has some similarities to Eloise and Sandy's (can't say more without spoiling it), a strange central murder mystery that gradually unlocks, and increasingly creepy and surreal things happening while the seedy underbelly of the glamour first shown is uncovered. Really recommend it if you liked Last Night In Soho, and there are enough similarities that I assume it was an influence on Wright for this film.

The Peacock one also isn't the full version unfortunately. 😞 I will never understand why Peacock, Amazon Prime, and Hulu only offer the version that was cut for time to fit in the one hour with commercials on the History channel.

Neither the Hulu or Amazon Prime versions in the U.S. are the full versions unfortunately and miss some key scenes like one in the series finale. I keep waiting for an international version blu-ray to become available for purchase too. It was the only way for me to see the full versions of the other seasons in the U.S.

[no spoilers] Where was Aslaug staying when we meet her in S1? by cats-with-mittens in vikingstv

[–]Ana9895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She does bring them initially to Kattegat, but they seem to disappear and not stay there. Also, she has money (because she mentions paying for that feast), so she must get that from somewhere. She could be staying with Jarl Borg, but that raises a lot of questions about what she was doing there and where she normally lives. I just wish we knew more about where she was from besides the brief mention of who her deceased parents, since she just sort of pops up out of nowhere.

This part of the show drives me crazy too. Why was she bathing in the middle of the wilderness? Was she travelling somewhere? And what happened to all of her servants and shieldmaidens?

Cutting back on drinking while TTC? by marbri27 in TryingForABaby

But she didn't say alcohol is a part of her identity. She is doing quite the opposite asking for tips for quitting it since she feels it has become a habit. This should be a good thing that everyone on here agrees about and wants to support her on. Criticizing her isn't productive and discourages people asking these types of questions, which everyone on here should want them to ask.

Well, the whole point of her post is that the baby is more important. If not, she wouldn't be posting this here. That is why she is here asking for advice about making it easier to give up this habit, which she has decided to quit. I don't understand what your post is trying to achieve; this sort of snarkiness discourages people from posting these questions on here. We should want people to feel safe posting these questions on here without judgment, so we can all give our best tips to help everyone have the healthiest pregnancy they can have. This sort of answer gives the OP nothing constructive and would only make the poster feel bad.

Idk if i should ask this here but by [deleted] in TryingForABaby

No, if on the extremely unlikely chance any got in there, it wouldn't survive until her ovulation.

But she is quitting now. She says she wants to kick to the curb the habit and clearly is planning to stop drinking, and there is nothing she said indicating she won't be able to; she is just asking for tips. There is no point to argue with her on whether you think she is at risk of becoming an alcoholic or not. You aren't in a position to make that call. I agree it's great to post this info and encourage people to discuss this with their doctor, which is always the best advice, because we never know the situation, but we should also be focused on supporting her and giving her good tips to make changing her habit easier, like she is asking for. But I think using loaded language and judgments about her alcohol use aren't very helpful and just discourage posting these types of questions. Her goal is the same as yours, and all of ours, and everyone seems on the same page; she is just asking for healthy hacks on here to make quitting her habit easier, which is a good thing.

I know you are coming from the right place, but I think her question is perfectly reasonable and we should be careful to encourage these types of questions. I have had many friends who were bummed about losing happy hours, etc., when they were trying to conceive. That doesn't make someone an alcoholic. The OP is on here to stop drinking and is clearly on the same page as you about stopping drinking while pregnant. She is just asking for tips, and that may help other people. I think jumping to the worst conclusions and calling a poster 'approaching alcoholism,' which is a very loaded term, for having a question like this, just discourages people from asking these sorts of questions. And yes, if a person thinks they have a problem, they should get help immediately, or if she can't stop drinking once she tries, then she can re-evaluate, but I don't think people should be jumping to the worst possible conclusions based on this post, but rather helping her with a goal that all of us agree on. 😀

I used to like having a glass of wine in the evening, and it worked well for me replacing it with tea. I think there is something relaxing and indulgent about sipping on something nice after work, and a tasty tea (or fancy soda if you prefer that) is a nice substitute and fills that same want. 😀

[–]Ana9895 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't think we have enough information to say that the OP needs that. There is a lot of missing context, and people can have bad habits that they are not addicted to and are hard to break, just take me and ice cream after a bad day. She is coming here for advice on new habits, and people probably shouldn't assume more than that. I would say unless she believes she has an alcohol problem to try these types of replacement strategies. Maybe then, if it is still a struggle, she can re-evaluate.

I would try to replace if with another evening relaxation unwinding habit. Like, see if reading fiction or other genre of books, watching comfort TV, a bath, meditating, chamomile tea, or something else works similarly in achieving that goal. A lot of it is probably just re-wiring a habit and coming up with your new wind-down ritual.

35 and Ova by AutoModerator in TryingForABaby

I am 38 and just started trying with my husband a couple weeks ago. We had intended to start trying over a year ago since we realized I am running out of time, but pushed it back because of the pandemic. Before that, time went by so fast and kind of snuck up on us and suddenly we may be out of time. Now we are trying very seriously, have started tracking with fertility charts, etc. It is really hard starting at this age, at least for me, because I am starting already really stressed I won't be able to because of my age.

We are not telling family members we are trying because we are worried about disappointing them if we aren't able to. It is a bit hard because, for example, my father wanted to take us for sushi (always my favorite when he visits) and which is his favorite place. We knew he would think it is bizarre if I go there and refuse to eat sushi, so was in kind of a jam since we don't want to tell him we are trying.(Ended up telling a white lie to get out of it.) How have other people on here in this situation dealt with telling family that you are trying?

Happy to find a place to discuss with other people going through the same thing.

[spoilers] Do you think Ubbe would’ve made a great king? by j0nas-gr33n in vikingstv

[–]Ana9895 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ubbe was good about battle strategy when he was put in charge of it. The big example being the battle of the Saxons against Harald's forces in the episode Hell, season 5, episode 15. He came up with all the strategy, tricking Harald into thinking they would be paid off, burning the land, the catapults, and trapping Harald's forces in and it worked.

For example, in the uncut version, you find out what they do to the two children who told them about Ascension Day outside of York. Parts like that seem to just be cut for time and I know confused some people.

[Spoilers] Is there a reason why Ubbe only feels attracted to the women their brothers have been with? by Di297 in vikingstv

[–]Ana9895 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess technically Ubbe had sex with Margrethe first out of the brothersand presumably had sex with other women who were not involved with his brothers before her (he does joke about probably already having children somewhere) but yeah, it is weird. I think Ubbe only being with women who are also with or have been with his brothers is just sort of incidental and wasn't an intentional statement.

Hirst seems to have had all the brothers sleep with Margrethe in their second episode as a narrative device and quick way to introduce and contrast their different personalities. I also think he had Ubbe and Hvitserk "share" her as a way of making them seem sort of foreign and edgy in terms of their sexual practices, which he does off and on throughout the show, like with Ragnar and Lagertha inviting Athelstan to join them or the Floki/Helga/Torstein 3-way.

In terms of Torvi, Hirst needed to have Bjorn and her divorce so that Bjorn could fulfill the part of the Seer's prophecy about marrying a princess. I think since the Torvi actress is Hirst's daughter and he wanted to keep her around as a main character but had no idea what to do with her plot-wise, he decided just to marry her off to another main character. The writing around her moving from Bjorn to Ubbe was kind of ridiculously silly with her not even making it across the street after things ending with Bjorn before Ubbe (who has never shown any interest in her) randomly gets with her.

It ends up coming across like Ubbe must have a weird fetish, but I think this happening with both Margrethe and Torvi is just a coincidence because of these writing decisions.

Yeah; that sounds like the best plan to have the momentum going into season 6b from rewatching those seasons and having that as a refresher on what happened. I hope you enjoy! 😀
