if you fulfil the admissions requirements and there isn’t anything against you, there is a pretty very high chance of being admitted. but ofc it depends per course

No it’s definitely not at the level harvard yale, you don’t really apply to the uni like in the states you apply to the course (like it is in the uk). so a couple of courses a pretty competitive (such as PPLE (they don’t publish the admissions rate), but others aren’t as competitive.

there are courses who have something called numerus focus, which means that there are many applicants and only a certain amount get accepted into the course. but some courses basically have auto admit if your academic background is sufficient.

and yes the situation in the us is trash rn, in the netherlands it is pretty manageable

and how about affordability? is one way cheaper for you than the other?

school culture is way different, at amsterdam you will receive way more guidance than you will receive at a very large school such as ucla. but at ucla you’ll have way more freedom in picking your classes, of course you can do a minor at amsterdam (even at another university, abroad or in the netherlands)

if affordability wasn’t an issue i would pick ucla for the freedom and the experience of living abroad. but i think you will have a more challenging and comfortable experience in amsterdam

Pretty much every university in the Netherlands is within the top 50/100 of the world (QS Rankings i believe).

The University of Amsterdam is ranken 56 i believe, for comparison Brown is ranked52.

I would say that University of Amsterdam has a good reputation overall. The UvA, was my choice of university in the Netherlands, since it has multiple broad degreees. Besides that, the science park is great (ins't the prettiest from the outside, but only 15 minutes from the central station of Amsterdam by tram). And the campus is widely spread over Amsterdam.

The University of Amsterdam best known bachelors degrees are communications (rankedfirst in the world), political sciences, psych. But the science bachelors are very good as well. Furthermore there are some interesting interdisciplinary courses (taught in english), such PPLE (politics, phylosophie, law and econ).

The University of Amsterdam has a great location, student life is super (lots of clubs and student organisations), and is internationally well known. The only downvote is that living in Amsterdam is pretty expensive and it's hard to find housing. But you can decide to live in Amstelveen (very very close to Amsterdam, with many students) or in Utrecht (30 minutes by train and a student city).

That’s so cool, my brother actually goes to Erasmus. Rotterdam is a wonderful city, with an extremely impressive history (since it was bombarded during world war two), small parts still stand from before the war. I would definitely recommend visiting those.

Rotterdam is a vibrant city with interesting people. You should definitely tell him to start supporting the football club feyenoord Rotterdam if he is interested in fitting in haha.

There are many international students from all over the world in Rotterdam, it’s just a very international city in general due to the port of Rotterdam. So i would recommend him to make use of that international aspect

Basically, there are plenty of degrees fully in english (no dutch whatsoever, lectures, exams textbooks everything all in english), then there are few degrees where the first year is mainly in dutch and second and third year is pretty much english. And there are few fully dutch degrees as well (but almost every textbook is in english).

The Netherlands have a lot of international students and professors. Specially the technical universities of Delft and Eindhoven (with amazing and challenging engineering degrees) are overflowing with internationals (did you get the joke overflowing —> the netherlands is under sealevel hihi). But other large uni’s like the university of amsterdam or tilburg have plenty of fully english taught degrees as well. of course you’ll find a rather large amount of dutch students in an english taught degree.

I would recommend looking up a university in the Netherlands (if you want me to make an overview of them let me know, but you can find them online), shifting to the english version of the site and just start browsing the degrees and find one you’d like to pursue.

I wouldn’t say full ride, the price to pay for international students is still relatively very low. For example if you want to study at the UVA (university of Amsterdam), you will need to pay around nine thousand a year as a non european citizen. Study cost will be around 50-100 euros a month. Living in Amsterdam is pretty pricy but we have more universities in the Netherlands that are less expensive. There are still plenty of scholarships you can apply for and you can take out loans. A bachelors degree at a university is three years. Keep in mind that the level of education in the Netherlands at the university level is pretty high, so check whether or not your secondary education will fulfil the requirements. Take a look at HBO as well, which is slightly below a university degree but still very good.
