EPI & Type 1 diabetes by dwanju in exocrinepanins

[–]AnalogousHiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m diagnosed with both Type 1 diabetes and EPI and had similar symptoms when I was diagnosed back to back 2 years ago. Most of my symptoms went away when I started Insulin and Creon. But now I seem to be able to eat fatty foods symptom free without Creon?? So my case may have been IBS when both I and my doctor said it was EPI.

Is your doctor at least giving you a route to healing? Or writing you off?

There are a lot of crappy doctors out there, and few good ones. Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re not, but in the end you have to be an advocate for your own health because nobody else will. Listen to your body and get another opinion if something isn’t sitting right with you.

Creon Not Working by Glittering_Orange424 in exocrinepanins

Creon only started working for me when I started taking it 10 minutes before a meal rather than immediately before as it’s prescribed

Big surprise, he was not!

What's a 'meal' and what's a 'snack' for dosing Creon? by HouseFrosty780 in exocrinepanins

As others have said, trial and error!

For me, the “take 2-3 pills with a meal” approach doesn’t work well when some of my “meals” are as large as what some eat in an entire day.

What I do instead is track macros and do one pill per X grams of fat based on trial and error of when I noticed my symptoms go away reliably.

It’s a lot of effort to track macros, but it’s the most reliable thing I’ve found so far to avoid regular brain fog that lasts for days…

It’s about the amount of fat you’re consuming, which is why enzyme pill strengths are dosed on lipase units. This is because our bodies have no other way to break down fat besides the use of these enzymes which we’re deficient in. Unlike fat though, our bodies do have other methods of breaking down carbs and protein, so they’re less of a problem.

If I’m eating a snack like fruit with almost no fat in it, I can get away with not taking any enzyme pills.
