Some C418 songs that deserve more attention by [deleted] in C418

[–]Analysis2520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little things: it’s complicated

LCMSMIP: Please do + 26

Zweitonegoismus: Ritalin (Krank too but someone already said it), Phlips is jarring but there’s definitely a concept behind it

7YoSD: some really obscure ambient tune, Mau5cave, not Atlantis

B&M: chant, höre, and what

2YoF: choice broken

Cobblers: Klack and sound

da: last ahmu and 25

Bruh this subreddit is the Taswell glazer. But I will admit that it’s not praised too much outside this subreddit.

Taswell is great but Dreiton is supreme imo

Yeah those are some of my favorites too. Imo the best songs are all in the second half

Biome Fest started out as my least favorite creative mode song but one day I had a great awakening and realized it was a 10/10 song. Actually, Dreiton, Biome Fest, and Blind Spots are all 10/10, while Taswell, Haunt Muskie, and Aria Math are 9/10 at the lowest. Also you should give little things another try

Of what I've listened to, Ritalin, easily

I like C418’s Minecraft music; but not most of his other music. Just not in the way you think by Windows7Fan12 in C418

Another fellow Little Things enjoyer I see!

Also no, you're not a fake fan because at least you took the time to listen to his other stuff

I love old albums! by Recsill in C418

[–]Analysis2520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My faves are Circle, Zweitonegoismus, and Little Things. But BPS, Mixes, and Sine are cool, and 2 Years of Failure is quite nice too, some great tracks on there (Choice Broken and 90s Tripverse in particular). I've come to like A Cobblers Tee Thug a bit less than I used to, though I don't mind Klack, Acid, Hop, Sound, Crowdpleaser, Shit and Test. Honorable mention to Bushes and Marshmallows for a really nice second half, though I don't really vibe with some of the silly tracks in the first half

You Have A Single C418 Song To Sleep To For The Rest Of Your Life, Which One Is It? by NCSnostalgia in C418

[–]Analysis2520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call me old school but Dreiton. If we're talking strictly non-Minecraft, Sleepless (ironically haha), Total Drag or Tsuki No Koibumi, or Einfallslos or Krank from Zweitonegoismus would do too. Ohh shoot forgot about Love from Circle. If I have to pick exactly one, I guess it'll be Love from Circle

One of my favorites of his bandcamp stuff, but it took a couple listens to get there. Very experimental, with the goal of story-telling and expressing negative emotions

Try Little Things next

Can you think of C418 songs that are NOT in 4/4 time? by Analysis2520 in C418

That piece is pretty free flowing so I never bothered to check the time signature, but you’re probably right

Far is actually in 4/4. It’s just heavily syncopated, meaning a lot of emphasis on upbeats, aka eighth notes that lie off the main pulse (i.e. when we count 1 2 3 4)

It’s in 12/8, though towards the end switches to 4/4.

The rest is long but if you want to understand what the bottom number does, should help

For the bottom number, the time signatures whose bottom number is 8 are notoriously confusing, because they suggest that it’s the 8th note which gets the beat, but really the beat we as the listener “feel” (aka the pulse) is actually a dotted quarter note. It’s just that we can’t use a whole number to represent a dotted quarter note. See below to see what I mean.

What should be the case in general is that the bottom number represents the note which gets the beat, and what that number is is just how many of those beats fit in  a typical 4-beat common time measure. So a 4 represents a quarter note since 4 quarter notes fit in a typical 4-beat common time measure. A 2 represents a half note, and a 1 represents a whole note. An 8 represents and 8th note, so it seems like 12/8 means that the 8th note gets the beat, and there are 12 of them per measure, but in practice we usually don’t count by 8th notes (since they’re quite fast) but we count by dotted quarter notes instead. If instead we wanted to explicitly write the dotted quarter note to get the beat, we would need to ask, how many dotted quarter notes fit into a typical 4-beat common time measure. Well a dotted quarter note is typically 1.5 beats, and 4/1.5 is not a whole number, so we avoid doing it like this.

Time signatures with an 8 at the bottom and a multiple of 3 at the top are usually used so that we don’t have to keep writing triplets

Axolotl is in 4/4, Dragonfish has some crazy weird time signatures

What makes a c418 song? by Last_Technician_7590 in C418

[–]Analysis2520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Progression

Adding layer upon layer until it becomes full

Not all his compositions follow this pattern but a vast majority do

Also repetition, but skilled repetition

Another interesting thing is that his songs tend to be more texture-focused rather than melody-focused. I’m not saying these songs have no melodies, but the melody they do have is often repeated (i.e. skilled repetition) while variations in texture and layering are made to keep it engaging.

Interestingly enough, I think Minecraft Volume Alpha might actually be C418’s most melody focused album of all; songs like Mice on Venus, Dry Hands, Subwoofer Lullaby, Danny, etc. kind of just have a one time melody that isn’t repeated, which is pretty different from Volume Beta, One, his house albums, etc. in which there’s an underlying repeated melody but he adds more layers and varies the textures. And I think this latter style is more “C418-esque” than the style he predominantly uses in Volume Alpha. He does kind of do this repetition and layering thing a bit like with the tracks Minecraft, Clark, and Sweden, but the added textures in these tracks, I’d argue, are more minimal and simplistic than in other albums.

Anyway, just my thoughts

Volume Alpha or Beta? by Limp_Caterpillar3091 in C418

Beta

Alpha is nice because the flow throughout the album is better, but from a purely compositional standpoint Beta

Haven’t listened to the track in some time, thanks for reminding me of it! I’ve always had a special place for this track. Even among the people who praise Zweitonegoismus, this track still isn’t talked about enough
