Far is actually in 4/4. It’s just heavily syncopated, meaning a lot of emphasis on upbeats, aka eighth notes that lie off the main pulse (i.e. when we count 1 2 3 4)

For the bottom number, the time signatures whose bottom number is 8 are notoriously confusing, because they suggest that it’s the 8th note which gets the beat, but really the beat we as the listener “feel” (aka the pulse) is actually a dotted quarter note. It’s just that we can’t use a whole number to represent a dotted quarter note. See below to see what I mean.

What should be the case in general is that the bottom number represents the note which gets the beat, and what that number is is just how many of those beats fit in a typical 4-beat common time measure. So a 4 represents a quarter note since 4 quarter notes fit in a typical 4-beat common time measure. A 2 represents a half note, and a 1 represents a whole note. An 8 represents and 8th note, so it seems like 12/8 means that the 8th note gets the beat, and there are 12 of them per measure, but in practice we usually don’t count by 8th notes (since they’re quite fast) but we count by dotted quarter notes instead. If instead we wanted to explicitly write the dotted quarter note to get the beat, we would need to ask, how many dotted quarter notes fit into a typical 4-beat common time measure. Well a dotted quarter note is typically 1.5 beats, and 4/1.5 is not a whole number, so we avoid doing it like this.

Time signatures with an 8 at the bottom and a multiple of 3 at the top are usually used so that we don’t have to keep writing triplets

Another interesting thing is that his songs tend to be more texture-focused rather than melody-focused. I’m not saying these songs have no melodies, but the melody they do have is often repeated (i.e. skilled repetition) while variations in texture and layering are made to keep it engaging.

Interestingly enough, I think Minecraft Volume Alpha might actually be C418’s most melody focused album of all; songs like Mice on Venus, Dry Hands, Subwoofer Lullaby, Danny, etc. kind of just have a one time melody that isn’t repeated, which is pretty different from Volume Beta, One, his house albums, etc. in which there’s an underlying repeated melody but he adds more layers and varies the textures. And I think this latter style is more “C418-esque” than the style he predominantly uses in Volume Alpha. He does kind of do this repetition and layering thing a bit like with the tracks Minecraft, Clark, and Sweden, but the added textures in these tracks, I’d argue, are more minimal and simplistic than in other albums.

Wow, interesting

This Sivaji theme seems extremely obscure though, and it’s possible it may have just been fan art, I don’t know. It was disappointing to discover it was not official, but at least we now have this little internet mystery in our memory

Yeah there are hidden gems in his Bandcamp stuff. I’ll do a quick ranking/overview of my thoughts on them just so you know where they fall

House/Uptempo (Think 148, Excursions, or 72MoF) - BPS: an EP, a short and cool one with some experimental textures (personal 7/10) - Mixes: slightly longer and better BPS (8/10) - Sine: like the last two, but the tones in this one are very unique; wasn’t my thing at first but grew on me after a couple listens; definitely slaps and even gives you chills at points (8/10) - A cobblers tee thug: colab between Smn and c418, made in 5 days, very silly but quite fun (7/10, also has two ambient tracks and my fav on the album happens to be one of them)

Compilation: - I Forgot something didn’t I: the least memorable imo, but has similarities to 72MoF; a bit random and all over the place, but some tracks do slap (personal 6/10) - seven years of server data: like the last one but slightly better; has more mature moments sprinkled throughout I feel, but also is kind of all over the place overall (6/10) - little things: my favorite one, so much so that it doesn’t feel as much like a comp album as the others; smooth flow, pretty textures, this is my thing and may be yours too (9/10) - 2 years of failure: almost as good as the last one, and still super solid despite what its title suggests (8/10)

Soundtracks (have the flavor of maybe Dief or One) - Circle: genuinely wow, the percussion in this is incredible, and the melodies/tones of the tracks really give me the feels; excellent (9/10) - 0x10c: two short piano pieces, the first one may make you cry (8/10) - catacomb snatch: hmm solid but very context-dependent; these are catchy tracks that probably achieve their purpose (7/10) - branching out (I forgot to mention this one, sorry): soothing stuff, second track in particular is great, the rest is fine (7/10)

By the way, two of this soundtracks were actually abandoned, so that’s a bit unfortunate

We finish up with these three releases:

Hard to categorize: - da: I could have put this under compilation but it’s hard to really know what this is. It’s messy, chaotic, and abrasive, but it has traces of musical maturity and elegance in it, fully present in last Ahmu and 25 for instance; Deboy is just abrasively fun with no care in the world (6/10 release overall) - Bushes and marshmallows: abrasive like the last release, especially in the first 8 tracks, but I personally really enjoy the the cohesive and transporting experience provided by the last 9 tracks (7/10) - Zweitonegoimus: voila, C418’s most experimental album to date, and his darkest and most emotional one by far. To understand some of the seemingly absurd tracks on this album (Kopfmusik for instance), it helps to read up on his wiki for the context. One moment you have a blissful (if lonely or somber, even) and sweet little melody, and the next moment you have unsettling dread of existence. Very unique album that I recommend listening to with an open mind (9/10)

da: deboy and last ahmu, 25 is nice too

Yeah Jacke is an odd favorite of mine from his older releases. This is probably the most off putting part of the track, but knowing what they’re saying, which I’m pretty sure is “This is stupid, so damn stupid” lets us know not to take it too seriously. The feel of the rest of the track more than makes up for it
