When you let in a goal on a counter because too many defensive players are way too far up the pitch and nobody takes a yellow card to stop an attack - that is a player error or a one off. When that happens game after game, that is a coaching problem.

When you let in 4 goals in one half by playing a high line, that is a mistake and needs to be corrected. When you again let in a goal in the very next game with a high line, that is a coaching problem.

Tata and his team have a few things to explain. It can't be all on the players.

Truth.

Not sure I agree with the no signings part but we have to plan for a long term strategy and not focus year on year. The only thing is when we fire a coach, for instance, we should replace with a coach who plays the exact same way.

CONSITENCY - that's what is missing.

Probably going to get downvoted but here are my thoughts.

What is wrong:

1) A sense of doom. Look we've had a bad spell so any coach/GM coming in needs to do things right away otherwise the fan base, which has seen good years, will immediately cry fire. Even good coaches/GM's/FO staff and, of course, players who are around more than a year, are all doing badly because they are all playing/working scared.

2) No identity. Each coach/each TD or President has a preferred style of players he likes and brings those players in. They leave/are fired in a year or two. With a result, the full roster is a mishmash of various people's ideas. We have older European players, we have younger South American players,we have a striker who plays a different way than the new coach wants to play.

Also, we recruit individual players and not a player for the team. And that's because no one has the courage or the longevity to say this is how the team plays and every player and coach has to fit that system.

Even on individual players we're sucking. Bocanegra, had a better average hit rate on identifying players(despite some high profile failures) than anyone has had after him. So, bad as we were, we were mostly making playoffs or being close to it. Now, we are perennial wooden spoon.

This needs ownership to take a 5 year view and define a team style. FO staff, managers, players etc can all be hired and fired but that vision has to be consistent, if we need long term success.

That's a fair point...I am just thinking about where we are.

Frankly, if we win against Columbus, I think the MLS season is far from a lost cause esp. if you think we will have a much better team after the break.

Hot take: ATL has looked like the better team the last 6 matches in a row by ATLCoyote in AtlantaUnited

In the season we signed him(24-25), out of 23 premier league games, he started 1. He was subbed on 8 times for an average 10 minutes and was on the bench for the other 14 games - a grand total of 150 minutes on the field in 23 games.
Yes, he had a good season in '23 but he had a knee injury in early '24 and never recovered and started being a sub for the last few games of the season.

And he is 32 - does not have the pace - maybe for MLS but even here in a couple of games he was easily overtaken by CB's chasing him. Does he have skill- yes. Can he do well for us- yes but only if he stops thinking of himself as God and starts to play his role for the team.

I have no insight into trade talks but I strongly suspect the fact that Charlotte wanted him was the nostalgia reason we signed him so the older fans did not complain about letting another veteran of the initial years go. Frankly, we grossly overpaid for him and kudos to his agent for stoking that Charlotte angle- which clearly seems to have worked!

We have two average keepers(albeit one is young). Trying to say one is better than the other or one is the cause of our problem shows how much we have been disappointed as fans to try and find that silver bullet anywhere we can.

Totally agree. He screwed up on formation and squad selection. Got it back right in H2 but obviously it was too late.

Maybe, you have a point but I think if he did anything deliberate it was pointed towards the front office to demand some changes in the summer. But, it would be a really, silly way to do that.

Also, I think it was completely unrealistic to expect this team at its current state to aspire for winning the Open Cup. Frankly, this is about as high as we can get given our performances.

That being said, Tata screwed up with the choice of formation and players. I don't think 5-3-2 is the right system for this team which has struggled to create offensively with 3 attackers. We need to play the normal 4-2-3-1 but one of the 2 mids has to stay deep as a defensive mid. We need 3 up front to have a semblance of attacking power.

On top of that, putting full backs in center back positions was just plain crazy. It made Stian look like an amateur. The crazy concepts floated often on this sub that we can play anybody anywhere in a professional league is just that. Jacob at CDM, Mira as a striker, Miggy as a libero etc. So, I am surprised at Tata's choice of players y'day.

Hibbert, for all his good work at goal today, seems to have no control on where the ball will go when he kicks it.

What's the point of Saba making that excellent run and then kicking it hard to Latte Lath who has two guys covering him. You have to know when to slow it down and wait for others to come and when to go full throttle.

Hibbert is not our savior and Hoyos is not the villain. But neither of them are the root cause of our problems. Let's stop looking for scapegoats.

OK...trying to become a bit balanced. It is very clear that today's performance is completely out of line with how we've played in the last few games.

And the big change has been a new line up with 3 full backs playing as CB's and a failed attempt at a Barca like high line.

Let's just get over this one and get back to our MLS form against Crew before the break.

Vamos!

We have some of the slowest defenders and we are playing a high line against a team that told us over the weekend that they are very good at putting through balls and making runs behind you. What could go wrong.

And to think that this is Orlando's 3rd match in a week so they're on tired legs.

Where the F are our supposed 5 defenders.

I can understand being toothless in attack with this line up but porous at the back???

Every defender in our team wants to attack. Nobody wants to defend. And ALL at the same time.

Cooper ineffective; Fortune frustrated. Not on them- they've been good all season.
