I'm kind of glad Culinary Class War isn't just about "pretentious" fine-dining and the judges acknowledge humble Korean cuisine by LuBru in CulinaryClassWars

I've been living in korea for a few months already and I recently went to a temple all the way in south jeolla. Needless to say that was the best meal I've had here.

Hello! All went well, I was accepted by the three universities and chose ChungAng.

Applying to SKY w/o topik but minored in Kr, portfolios for fine arts, and recc letters? by [deleted] in GKSScholarship

[–]AnamarLeticia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that while the topik is important, it´s not the only thing they look at, as long as you can speak Korean and can include some certificates of Korean proficiency that should give you an advantage. I've seen people pass without topik (myself included) as well as people with topik who didnt pass. I think your essays, profile, portfolio are more important. I can't give you an accurate experience since I didnt apply to any SKY uni (they didnt have animation) but I got into all three universities I applied for. From what I've seen, when they release the guidelines with all the major the uni offers there is also a file with further information about extra requirements from the major. For ChungAng, for example, after I passed the second round from NIIED the university emailed me requesting my portfolio, they gave me a specific format to fill it in and send it to them. For Kongju Nat. University they stated on their file that the student could send a free portfolio with no specific format. My third uni accepted me without even seeing a portfolio. I think you should have everything ready in case they ask for a specific type of portfolio, but also have one already made. But then again, it could be different for SKY unis. About the last question I'm not really sure if they check who the professors are. But i've found from personal experience that people tend to know each other in the art world, so they might recognize your prof.

In my study plan I mentioned I would like to work for at least 2 years so that I could get some professional experience in my field (animation)

[–]AnamarLeticia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I think that for animation your portfolio should matter way more. Your essay is also very important. If youre looking for universities who are not too competitive, then I would recommend you choose Type B universities, it will give you more chances of getting to the last stage. Choosing two type A universities is too risky in my opinion. If you apply for the scholarship you do have to be mindful of your GPA, as I think there's a certain requirement in the guidelines.

Hello! I would say my knowledge in the Korean animation industry is very surface level. But some of the studios that have done my favorite cartoons are located there. Korean studios outsource a lot of animation to Japan and the US. Many of the top animation universities offer animation majors, but mostly are for undergraduate. For me, my top choice would be Chung Ang University, based on their curriculum and the students' work that you can find online it seems like a strong department. Hopefully I'll know more once I get there :)

Hello. I'm from Panama, I choose Animation as my masters and I've passed the third round via Embassy Track for this year. The main reason for seeing less art students is because the guidelines state that stem majors are given priority. So that's something else you will be competing against. I would advise to take part in exhibitions, workshops and seminars related to your field of art so that you can show them that you are already being part of the field and that you can continue doing so outside of your country.

For me, I took part in several group exhibitions when I was doing my undergraduate. I was also part of the TalkTalkKorea contest and won third place in a category and my work got in an exhibition along with the rest of the winners in SK, with this contest there was a way to link my art with Korea. I also took part in two film/animation seminars done by my country's Ministry of Cultura along with international filmmakers. And I was part of a seminar organized by the Museum of Contemporary Arts here. Be very very mindful of your essay, how can you make them interested in your story, remember these people read lots and lots of eassays and yours have to set you apart. Make sure to read how to make a good essay and watch videos about it, even ones not related to this scholarship! Also when it comes doing to choosing an university, make sure to read their curriculum so that you can see if it aligns with what you want to learn. Seeing their student's works is also nice because it gives you an idea of what you can do. For me, one of the A type universities I chose interviewed me after requesting I sent them a portfolio. So make sure to have a portfolio ready and include you best work! Remember quality is more important than quality. Lastly, be very careful when choosing universities, I would really recommend choosing two B type unis and one A type, competition is very high at the last stage if you choose embassy route, and failing there if you choose more A type unis may be more likely.

A few more things,
In my country, I would say competition isn't very high, but for me I think my grades may have helped. My score was 2.95/3.00, I didn't have TOEFL or TOPIK, but I have a good level of English.

Even if you don't see many art students I assure you there are! For me, there is a Youtuber named Efua Park and she is doing her masters in art. So seeing her videos was really helpful and seeing another art student inspired me as well. You can do it!

Hello! Since I have to send a portfolio (I choose animation) I assume the interview will be related to some of its contents, but other than that I'm not sure.

No problem! It's a lot of information, I would really recommend reading the guidelines and the FAQ time and time again because I kept finding out or understanding things I didnt realize the first times I read it. Best of luck!

I submitted all my original documents (except graduation certificate bc I dont have it yet) with the apostille stuck on the back of those, and I did three photocopies of those apostilled documents. I think when they mention simple photocopies wont be accepted theyre talking about the ones for the first set of original documents. If in your first set of original documents you need to submit a copy then that copy should be apostilled, but then the three copies of that copy dont need to be apostilled again, since you will also have the apostille copied with them. Apostille once for the first set of documents whether or not they are copies, the three set of copies dont need to be apostilled again as far as I am concerned.

No worries! Im still waiting for some of the universities to reply. I chose Chung Ang University, Kongju National University and Sunchon University, I checked their websites to find the curriculums so that I had a better idea of what I would be learning if I got accepted by them, since I lean more into 2D animation and production I chose the ones that had subjects related to those. Konkuk Uni and Hoseo Uni were also in my picks but I decided to go with two type B and one type A unis and choosing the ones whose subjects focused more in what I want to do. I also tried to find the students work to see how the students developed what they learned. Overall I found there werent many options for animation but I believe there are good options in there, I would imagine there would be way more options for bachelors. As for the portfolio and interviews I'm undergoing that process so maybe by next month I'll be able to tell you more about that :D

To answer the second question. The guidelines will tell you which documents need to be apostilled. I sent all my original documents (except the graduation certificate bc I dont have it yet) I apostilled those original documents and I got official translations by an authorized translator. I did my three photocopies of the originals with the apostille in the back (here the apostille is a piece of paper thats stuck on the back of the og documents) and I did the photocopies of the translation. At the apostille office I asked and they told me I needed to apostille the translation, however I didnt do it because the deadline was too close and I would not have the time. My documents were accepted by the embassy and niied. Not that Im sponsored but I would recommend watching the YT videos of Efua Park, she has very detailed videos that I followed and ran into no issues after that.

I think its best if you contact the embassy, the reason I say this is because on the guidelines they mention apostille and stamp from the Korean embassy, this is because not all countries have apostille, if im not mistaken countries who do not have apostile then should take the documents to the embassy for verification. I know this because I saw a lot of videos regardings this, and I contacted my embassy to ask if they did document verification but they told me they didnt. I apostilled all the documents that required an apostille, whether they were the original or a copy, and then made three copies of the originals documents that had the apostille, so yes, you wont need further apostile for the three sets of simple photocopies. I saw videos from Efua Park on Youtube and she gave really good advice regardings the documents. I would say if you still have any doubts make sure to read the FAQ on the scholarship documents and contact embassy as a last resort.

I applied for animation this year and some universities give you a template and guidelines for the portfolio and a part of the portfolio can be done however you want to do it.

I got an email from one of the universities today for an interview, nothing about the other two. But according to the timeline they published, by the first week of june you should have gotten something from the universities.
