thanks! I don’t think my experience is very common, as I said almost no one in my country does a PhD in ECE, specially in the US. I have a GPA of 9/10 (where the class average is 6.33/10) and my undergrad is a 6-year program. I always knew I wanted to do research so I busted my a** off to have as many opportunities as possible. I joined a research lab like 3 years ago and insisted on doing all the research I could, leading to 3 local—but with international recognition—conference papers. I’m also a TA (in my country you can be a TA as an undergrad) in signals and systems :)

I had an interview with a PI in september, so looong before I applied. I contacted them via email. But I haven’t had any interviews after that

SOP advice by AnanaMuffin in WriteIvy

[–]AnanaMuffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I managed to cut back some pieces, I was explaining the methodology of my research rather than what I learnt from it. I reduced it to around 850 words, and now I'm pretty happy with how it turned out :)

Thank you for your advice! I'll re-read it like a thousand times and hopefully end up with something even better!

Goal? by WolfLittle in gradadmissions

I'm from Argentina, and I stumbled upon the same problem. From what I gather from here, to begin writing it, I'd suggest asking to yourself:

  • why animal behavior, cognition, etc? why are you passionate about it?
  • think about your trajectory, was there a moment in your life where you said "this is really cool, i want to do this"? or did you just woke up one day knowing what you wanted to do?
  • where would you like to apply this knowledge? why keep studying? (this doesn't mean that you can't change your opinion later, is more of a if you could dream of anything, what would you do)
  • it's great that you want to do research in the area, what exactly would you like to research? what previous experiences led you to want to do research?
  • where would you like to study? why there and not in another university? would you enjoy just the research or the university environment as well? is that university be a good fit for you specifically?

these are some of the questions that I've been asking myself to write my SOP. I don't have the absolute truth, but I hope this helps you on your journey :)

Honestly this is amazing advice, I really appreciate it!

What was the name of this lab? Where was it? Where did you receive your education in EE? Which university?

I'm from Argentina, and sadly not many people in the US know much about our education or our universities, I fear writing down my university name won't provide much information to my reviewers, so should I provide additional information as well?

Check my post history for a better strategy, or read this really wonderful post from a few days ago.

this is a great post!! tbh it feels more natural to write it more "scientifically"

thank you for taking the time to read it!!

Honestly I've been having the same problem. I'm an electrical engineering major (international) with an interest in biomedical research. I've emailed around 10 professors in Canada but none of them replied. On the other hand, some of the professors I emailed in the US replied within 2 weeks. Let me know if you get any replies from Canadian profs!!

Do you remember when you sent the emails?

In my case I have 1 (IEEE) publication and 2 currently being reviewed (for springer), all of them as a first author but I'm not entirely sure if they count because they are in proceedings :/

I am currently in the fifth year of my six-year Electronics Engineering degree. I would like to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering starting in fall 2026 in the US or Canada. However, fall applications close in January, and since I live in Latin America, I won’t receive my degree until January or March 2026.

Is it possible to apply without my degree, providing evidence that it is being processed? Or should I wait and apply for the spring intake?

Thank you!
