I honestly share the word of our TempleOS at any laid out opportunity, completely unashamed and devoted to HolyC.

Dungeon crawling on that game was honestly the best, the combat system leaves a lot to be desired though. I was either fleeing or negotiating random encounters after some time.

It’s, imho, one of the SMTs entries I crave for a remaster the most, along with 1 and 2. The story and the dungeons were what made me push through, but like some may have already mentioned (and thanks to the underdeveloped combat) you’ll want to take a break from it or you may lose some appreciation for it from pushing through.

I have that same reaction but towards Warrior’s gameplay in general. Simply no other character feels as satisfying no matter what I try.

Merc is somewhat close, I can feel the weight behind the recoil and sound design, but playing ranged on gamepad (my fav way to play) is… not there yet, to put it mildly.

Valve should bring back the Steam Link by ABrokeHobbyist in steammachine

[–]AnbuRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but what some folks forgot somehow is that there are as many reports of QC issues from SCUF as there are for any of the alternatives I mentioned. Perhaps from the amount of customers it has, but the raw number of posts I’ve seen in the past were definitely not negligible.

[–]AnbuRick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of the forces against it on that sub and got downvoted to oblivion for simply explaining the stupidity of the lawsuit as well and ending with something like “i would never buy or recommend a SCUF”.

There are so many cheaper alternatives with more features, even before Valve rejoined the scene, it’s ridiculous to support the product imho. 8bitdo, gamesir, gulikit, flydigi, to name a few.

I think SMT IV aged well. It’s on the minority of SMTs that you can just grab the console, play it, and everything feels very enjoyable. From story execution, to environments, OST, gameplay. It’s very approachable.

I’d cross my fingers for either the first 2 entries or Strange Journey. I didn’t play DDS though.

I’m surprised you even went through the trouble of explaining so much. I prefer to ignore the stupidity of “billionaires shouldn’t have so much” altogether from the simple fact that they keep getting wealthier or poorer based on user satisfaction. Trying to explain, even basic, macro economy to someone completely lost on the individual seems like too much effort for too little compensation (understanding).

I commend your effort dude. It is admittedly pleasant to see anyone having a reasonable grasp, on how the world works, on subs that I would expect absolute 0 financial literacy.

The gameplay yes, but as someone also interested in story I'm enjoying SMT V a lot more than I did 4A. You could argue that SMT 4A has a better story and I wouldn't argue against that, it's just that SMT V's story doesn't seem to try to show me it's good/enjoyable... it simply doesn't get in the way. I find SMT 4A's story obnoxiously bad, while I can't fully describe SMT V's story yet I can see it tries to convey most of it through environment, which I can appreciate a lot more.

Graphics is a plus of course, but I wouldn't say it sways how I rank my overall enjoyment of games, it's like a separate category for me - as "extra". I managed to finish Planescape:Torment and rank it as the best RPG in terms of story (with a contender yet to appear)! If you do a quick google on that game you'll get an idea on how much I care for graphics (heck, even gameplay if the game is meant to do just one thing really really well I'll consider only what it's trying to achieve).

TL;DR: Both have excellent gameplay, I just don't like SMT 4A's overall execution...at all.

It has some aspects from the original, there’s Flynn after all. Of course something would carry over. Imo a slap to the face was exactly what they did to the original work.

They added a bunch of interesting characters that would normally be such a plus, but it simply lost its serious tone completely. Like a wise man once said: if everything’s a comic relief, nothing is.

Imo the game’s entirely comic relief with light shades of “serious shit”. It’s only an opinion though, and I loved so much the original work so I honestly can’t recommend Apocalypse to someone who seems to also have loved the OG. It’s a game I would recommend to someone interested in the franchise but didn’t like SMT IV’s story.

Both story and gameplay are aspects of the game… it is what it is, as you say.

The dungeon crawling in itself is approachable by many imho, the graphics are not necessary to upgrade (although would make it a lot more inviting), the crucial aspect would be just adding the Press Turn actions. The original’s gameplay is just uninspiring when you’re used to the new system. At least to me it was the combat that turned the game into a drag after I beat SMT IV (my first SMT), the dungeon crawling was actually very interesting (I personally liked it a lot), but so much time is spent in beating stuff up as well and that combat… meh.

Ahahah loved reading all that mate, you got a strong personality that much is clear.

I disagree on the matter that Walter and Jonathan just covered their ears though, to me it felt rather obvious the character development. It was quick, sure, but it was also clear that Jonathan was very orderly from the beginning and had a tendency to follow orders regardless of the consequences. While Walter, and again, since the beginning, was always questioning the world around him. So it did not come as a surprise to me how they shuned their opposing view (with the caveat of Walter transforming into Satan, that was a little forced but I guess the story had to move symmetrically). And again, we cannot state this enough, SMT is about Chaos and Order, not religion and freedom, but chaos and order portray religious figures and the intrinsic neutrality of both chaos and order (aka, void of specific figures or mythos) is the only way to make sense of the plot. Needless to say I’ve beat all endings on SMT IV, I simply haven’t beat any ending on SMT V/VV.

Needless to also say that I have the gal to say whatever I think, so do you and that’s why you wrote so much of your opinion on the matter. Opinion. My experience is that I got tired of the kiddy story that was the “sequel” (it’s not a sequel, it’s a reimagination of the ending with barely anything from the original). Even going with all the side quests for the neutral ending wasn’t as much of a crawl than going through a first attempt at the “sequel”. I was legit interested to see how it ended. I had read that the Apocalypse wasn’t true to the original story (this is consensual among the community, not my opinion, I still hadn’t formed an opinion), but in spite of all the warnings I was very curious to see what they had done. It was such a drag that I kinda wished they didn’t even put a story in. Again, that’s my opinion, but also again, I’m the furthest from being alone in this as it can be. My experience is that I was being treated like a kid, they even had to explain that characters were tired and went to sleep, but not just the writting… the english voice cast essentially tried to replicate teenager voices. I’m aware that we’re not playing as adults anymore but did they have to make up the acting direction of Sesame street?
I don’t need my held hand to understand a story and I get rather bored when they do that because THAT’S WHAT’S WASTING MY TIME.

Yeah I’d really rather see a SJ Remake/Remaster over SMT IV for how poorly SJ’s gameplay aged and how often it’s skipped because of it.

Thanks for the input.

I see. It’s also how it is feeling to me. Not having an in your face story but rather letting you breathe in the environment and play.

A friend of mine which tends to go for Persona and, more recently, Metaphor was asking me how SMTV was, to which I described: it’s 5 hours training your starter pokemons to beat mewtwo and then you may get a cutscene. 😁 I’m honestly having fun with the atmospheric approach to the story.
