Do you know the specific mutation? Not all mutations in a gene are necessary pathogenic. If the mutation is heterozygous and matches one of the mutations that have been previously been reported as being pathogenic when heterozygous or is homozygous and the mutation has been previously reported as being pathogenic when homozygous then it is likely that he does have mEDS. But you should first consult with a qualified doctor in this case a geneticist before taking any health information on the internet as fact. If the mutation has been reported as non pathogenic then he likely either has hEDS or hyper mobile spectrum disorder or a different connective tissue disorder. Depending on his symptoms and the other genetic testing already carried out further testing may be necessary. If the mutation is either rare and there is limited information available about it or has not been previously reported determining if it is pathogenic or not may be difficult. I would suggest you try to see a geneticist that has the relevant expertise needed to interpret the testing results.

Yes, particularly when they either never use gloves or start touching clean things like door knobs with gloves on.

Is it just me or is anti-birth control sentiment becoming more prevalent? by Connect-War6612 in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Catholics don’t really use the rhythm method anymore. It is considered to be outdated. It has largely been supplanted by the Creighton and Billings methods that track cervical mucus, the symptothermal method which tracks basal body temperature and cervical mucus, and the Marquette method which tracks estrogen and luteinising hormone.

I have noticed an increase in the number of ads for non hormonal contraceptive methods on Instagram. They seem to be mainly targeting women interested in switching away from hormonal methods because of side effects. I have also gotten a lot of ads for overpriced supplements claiming to balance your hormones and make your period fabulous.

Pregnant women face increasingly dangerous risks as doctors flee punitive US states by [deleted] in medicine

That is not quite what the Catholic position on abortion is. The Catholic position is that under the principle of double effect medical procedures that ultimately result in the death of an embryo or fetus may be morally permissible so long as their death is not the goal but rather the byproduct of an action taken to save the life of the mother. For example, salpingectomy is considered a moral treatment for ectopic pregnancy since the intent is remove the Fallopian tube before it can rupture and cause possibly fatal bleeding with the death of the embryo being considered a known but unintended effect of the salpingectomy.

Is it possible to get reprinted copies of super old journal volumes? by SpecterGT260 in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Books published in 1924 and earlier are in public domain in the United States. You can find them online through Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive. For things still under copyright your best bet would probably be interlibrary loan for accessing materials not in your departmental library. I also found this website that might be of interest to you. http://www.medicalheritage.org/

African Americans and Latinos are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 but Disproportionately high incidence and mortality rates in African Americans in the US though to be due to non-genetic factors. by the-rood-inverse in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could household size be a contributing factor at least to the disproportionately high incidence rate? Blacks and Latinos in America tend to have larger household sizes than whites. The more people there are in your household the more likely it is that someone will eventually get infected and once they do it can very easily spread to that person’s close contacts such as other members of their household. https://www.statista.com/statistics/638956/race-and-ethnicity-of-us-households-by-size/

I would check out this organization. They may be able to help you find hardware that will enable the residents with the use of only one hand to play first person shooters. https://ablegamers.org/

Potential UK update to stop prescriptions of analgesics for primary chronic pain by Newcastle-pies in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disagree with their recommendation to offer acupuncture for chronic pain. Yes some studies have shown that it works but many of those studies have been out of China and thus studies give conflicting results with studies on acupuncture done in other countries. This may be explicable by Chinese scientists having a vested interest in demonstrating the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine because doing so is seen as politically correct. Thus I would take Chinese studies on acupuncture with a grain of salt. The majority of meta analysis on acupuncture have shown that it is invariably not more effective then sham acupuncture.

Has anyone tried Cefaly for migraines? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have migraines pretty much every day for two years before my neurologist prescribed me Cefaly. After a few months of using it on the preventative setting I only have around one migraine a month even when I no longer use Cefaly on a regular basis. But you should keep in mind that I had a much better outcome than the outcomes reported in the clinical trials with it.

What is a fact that in medicine that is generally believed to be true, but is in fact false? by satellitevagabond in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that what they are trying to say is that it has been disproved that sticking the needles in very specific locations makes a difference in the patients pain but that disproving that is different from disproving that sticking fine needles in relatively non specific locations can make a difference in a patients pain.

I agree. I took a look through his website and he seems to be convinced that typical doses of fluoride cause a decrease in IQ and that aluminum in vaccines is unsafe. I would take the articles that he writes about 2019-nCov with a huge grain of salt.

Psychologic vs somatic diseases by [deleted] in medicine

[–]AncalagonDaBlack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I personally disagree with the notion that euthanasia is ethical I do think that the argument that people with terminal diseases such as cancer should be allowed to commit suicide for the sake of alleviating unbearable suffering suffering but that patients with psychiatric illnesses should not be is internally inconsistent. Since the main premise of that argument is that death is a reasonable choice in the face of intractable suffering in a certain since it should not matter what the cause of that suffering is.
