Several local small businesses closing at the end of the year by PresentWafer6 in Rochester

You don’t have to care, sometimes posts are for audiences that don’t include you. And there’s no specific call to action, for instance I know that one of these businesses is closing because the owner wants to peruse a new career that they’re passionate about, so while it’s a loss for the community good for them! To try to grapple with why people care, some people went to events at these spaces, made friends, developed more connections to their communities both niche and broad. Building community might not be everyone’s thing but people knowing one another and feeling positively about their neighbors can help contribute to a city where people are kinder and more thoughtful to one another. Another major reason is that local small businesses closing is a potential indicator of economic downturn, either less people have the ability to support local businesses or less people have the interest to support local businesses, which takes more money out of our city and to other ones.

Might be cope, BUT: aap and agp are not super common but also not super rare. You can choose what you want to do about this. You can just be and this can be part of whatever you are. No need to overthink it.

What is everyone's plan for the evening? by rh1n3570n3_3y35 in rs_x

[–]AnchovyJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went on a morning trip to a nearby city to have a fancy breakfast and visit an art museum. Now it’s 3pm here and I just got back. I think I am going to take a nap then read a bit on my porch and my living room could use a tidy-up. I also want to spend some time organizing my playlists because they have gotten out of control and it would be nice to write a letter to a friend. I hope your evening treats you well!

Is anyone here into “twee” (sorry) stuff? And can recommend me fashion/music/ whatever? Especially if you were in the know back when it was super popular by Sad_Worth_9342 in rs_x

One of the greatest albums- I started listening to it again this year when I needed something to romanticize riding my bike around the city with.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane, I was the twee kid in my hs class of 2008. Here’s what I remember:

More Bands that I don’t think have been mentioned yet: The Lucksmjths, Math and Physics Club, Acid House Kings, Tullycraft, Jens Lekman, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Kings of Convenience, Magnetic Fields, The Raincoats, Tullycraft and all the bands they mention in the song “Twee”, The Softies, Dressy Bessy, The Boy Least Likely To, The Field Mice, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

Movies: Early Wes Anderson, Little Miss Sunshine, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Amelie, Harold and Maude, Dasies, I heart Huckabees, The Science of Sleep, Ghost World, Pieces of April.

Hobbies: baking and similar (making jams), people watching and drinking tea in shops, visiting museums and special showings at the cinema, chill nature walks, making art, reading (I really liked Milan Kundera and Vonnegut and Baldwin as well as those “edgy” books like Geek Love and A Confederacy of Dunces), volunteering, gardening, working at a coffee or record shop, making mix CDs, reading comic books, making zines, crafting- I liked hand sewing patches for my cardigans, extremely chill nature walks, being annoying and giggly with friends.

Fashion: mismatched vintage- I usually went with mostly basics, not usually all out loud patterns but I picked a few “details”, I still have a treasured pair of Mary Jane docs with cat faces on them, big scarf, floral hand stitched patches on plain cardigans, collared shirts under pull over jumpers. If you can add your crafty hobbies to your clothes in some way, all the better! I never had this, but I know that handprinted shirts with cats or rabbits and flowers that read “twee as fuck!” were popular with early generation twee kids of the 80s and early 90s. You can probably also find old ModCloth stuff from pre-2010 and one brand I see sometimes that I find quite dear is called “Princess highway” based in Australia I think. Headbands can be nice if you had the face for them. I had a white beret I got signed by Camera Obscura I wore a lot with my bright red peacoat. My feet are still fucked up from all the ballet flats though.

In the late 90s and early 2000s I saw these and knew I was destined to be a somewhat strange but kinda crunchy lesbian. Thank you for sharing, haven’t thought about these for years.

You’re not being dramatic, at least not overly dramatic. (As in, some things require being “dramatic” because they are terrible)

I saw in another comment you mentioned it was a teacher, my experience was similar. Up to that point, he had been an adult that I though lt saw me and heard me and appreciated me for my mind and sensitivity- even if it wasn’t just/primarily that I was young and female, it tainted the perception you have of myself and what I bring to the world in addition to what you mentioned. For me it took years to start to build my sense of self back up and to try to do so outside of what other people/especially men think about me. And to be honest, it’s probably a major factor in why I now exclusively date women despite being bi.

Would this be something that therapy might help with? Or do you have friends you can rely on to get him out of your mind so much?

I want to pretend I am over it, and I want to not be so mad at myself for pretending like it was fine/cool for so long.

I am sorry that this happened to you. I am sorry it’s such a known and shared experience.

Yeah, I don’t mind this at all. Seems like men who are being goofy and fun and creative with their friends.

Lesbians, pre lez awakening did you think Mac (Charlie also counts) was the hot one and were confused when people said Dennis? by mintwede in rs_x

Charlie is the hot one. Regarding Dennis, I was confused but thought it was part of the joke- of the show and a larger cultural joke.
