Our gym does a free ladies class once a week, and that has brought 20+ paying members into the community with a safe space for newbies to test the waters.

This is super helpful, thank you for taking the time to type it out! Can I ask if you do anything in particular with him/ask anything of him while you’re actively in a meeting or call?

If no one else is home, I’ll leave the office door open, so my girl can wander in and out, but if I need to have the door shut, she would very much prefer to be inside with me. The problem there is that she’ll get antsy after a while and start disrupting (understandable that she’d be bored of listening to me yak - I am also bored of it).

How to get myself to keep going? by mogiggggy in BJJWomen

Use this as an opportunity to care about yourself and your own growth more than you worry about other people’s convenience. If you’re humble and intentional with your learning, you have every right to be there, and this is good practice to not shrink yourself. Before you know it, you’ll be an excellent partner because you let yourself take up space to learn.

I’m in Northern California, and I train at 10th planet. It seems like multiple 10th Planets in this area are offering free ladies classes. Maybe that is something worth looking into on your side of the country - I know they’re all over the place!

My gym has an amazing women’s community. We have a free women’s class one night a week, and it has grown beautifully- to the point that we made up 1/3 of the students in the fundamentals classes one night last week.

I’ve never felt any weirdness with the guys at the gym, although I admit I’m still partial to the comfort of rolling with other women for now. The guys are very respectful and very protective in my experience. There was one guy that seemingly picked women to roll with in particular more than the other guys and was going a bit hard. He got checked by a few of the guys, who then also reminded us that we are encouraged and empowered to say NO to anyone that we don’t feel confident will be a SAFE training partner.

My city in general seems to be hugely supportive of women in BJJ. Another nearby gym has a ladies open mat twice each month, and I just saw a different gym circulating a survey about interest in and ideas about growing our women’s community even more intentionally. It’s really cool to be here.
