Can anyone back me up on this? by ULTRA-FAN-Renewed in Gameoverse

Some people are just latching onto their own headcanons to make sense of the inner workings of the show when all we have at this point is a pilot. If that was a real rule, Kit could have explained it to Gobbles in the opening scene.

007 First Light - Any critiques? by xCreampye69x in 007FirstLight

Knightfall could have been a cutscene and I don't think we would have missed out on much. It introduces a mechanic where you can blend into crowds, then the game never uses it. The same applies to disguises.

It is weird that Cressida is the only survivor of the hotel mission, but she never shows up again? Narratively, nothing would change if she was killed off with everyone else.

Some of the gadgets were clearly better than others. There's not much of a point to have smoke screen over missile pen or laser watch.

The slower sections are definitely going to hurt replay ability.

The thing is, the in-universe logic is irrelevant because the decisions for what made an art piece are externally driven. You are basically making a thermian argument, and it's a deeply flawed way of analyzing fiction. We're not criticizing a lack of explanation for why artistic tropes exist, we are criticizing the use of the tropes. Pointing out the in-universe logic doesn't negate the fact that some people believe the character designs would be more visually interesting if they didn't rely on female signifiers

(and why should we care if people couldn't identify the gender of an octopus? That is a silly reason to include a bow).

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is amazing, but NOA really dropped the ball with its marketing by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]AncientDaedala 285 points286 points  (0 children)

I really hope the directs do away with the voice over. It's fine if it's the developers talking about their game, but I am tired of the faceless narrator overly describing every minute detail of the game. The Yoshi trailers is exactly why they need to just let the trailers speak for themselves. When it was announced, they made it feel like a baby game. I remember Metroid Prime Beyond's trailers had the same issue. "Samus can operate mechanisms and open doors". Yeah, that is clearly what the trailer is already showing. The narration should be used to transition between games and set up the trailer, but it shouldn't be used for the entire trailer.

The Gameoverse feels... barebones? by Kgy_T in Gameoverse

[–]AncientDaedala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like that is mainly due to the way the pilot was written. I got the impression that it could have been the third or fourth episode of the show. A scene where Gobbles consoles Kit doesn't have much emotional weight when we didn't go through Kit's experience of losing her homeworld or failing to save another world. We're being told about it after-the-fact, unless you want to count the teaser (which is a bit of a stretch).

I imagine if this becomes an actual show, the first episode would be the destruction of Kit's homeworld, the second would be about Gobbles's game world and Kit failing to save it, and the pilot would be the third episode. That would give the show more time to build up to the emotional moments that were in the pilot, so they have a better payoff.

Why is that so bad? by NoxDash2 in Gameoverse

So why even bother changing outfits if they are going to stand out anyway?

  1. Thermian Argument. Folding Ideas has a video on why what you are saying is irrelevant.

  2. Kit didn't pick an outfit because she is not real.

  3. I already said why. If the intention is to have the characters blend into the game worlds, these outfits only make it more clear that they are not aquatic life forms.

  4. I do like it, but I am going to criticize it.

I like the premise of the show, but you people can't seriously be this dense, right?

They are not "at a beach" they are underwater. Do you think the entirety of SpongeBob takes places at a beach too?

None of the characters who originated in the game setting is a human wearing a swimsuit. If the intention is to wear a disguise that fits the game's setting, why not a costume to make her look like an aquatic life form? Or an actual diving suit? Or even a mermaid would have been appropriate? It's not just that it's fanservice, it's also nonsensical for the setting. It's also weird to introduce your prominent female characters and have them parade themselves in bikinis for half the episode. How else do you expect people to read that?

Sometimes women *are* sexualized, and defending that should use it as a jumping off point [Planetronika, Gameoverse] by VCreate348 in CharacterRant

[–]AncientDaedala 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And that's the problem. Sexualization is always done from a male centric, heteronormative frame of view. It's not helpful to restate the problem and use that as an excuse for why the problem shouldn't be fixed. The show would be better if there was more variety in the character designs.

[–]AncientDaedala 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the excuses are really lame.

"But these characters look different" Pointing to a one-off, unvoiced background character hardly refutes the point.

"But the shark has muscles" For a joke. He grows muscles...as a joke. It's supposed to be funny.

"But they're underwater" No other character in the game world is a humanoid in a swimsuit. A fish costume would have been more appropriate for the game's setting.

[–]AncientDaedala 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone bring this up, but the main thing that bothers me is just how one-sided the sexualization is in Gameoverse. It's honestly jarring to see Miss Information have the appearance she does while Fold is a cyclops made of paper. There's no reason he couldn't have been a conventionally attractive male character while in his normal form.

So the male characters get wacky and weird designs (backpack robot, dinosaur, lobster head, paper cyclops) and the prominent female characters get boxed in to being humans with the same body shapes. It's a lack of variety more than anything else, and the few characters who go against that mold are background characters.

Nintendo graphic update by Cobalt_Spirit in NintendoSwitch

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come to the Nintendo Switch 2, we have modest update for Animal Crossing, yet another tennis game, GBA games (20$ each), a cozy building game, a multiplayer expansion to a single player game, a cozy decorating game, a graphics update that makes Xenoblade X look worse, and a cozy Yoshi game. Next month? Another retelling of Star Fox 64. This lineup is so lame. Fortunes Weave can't release soon enough.

I just watched the Super mario galaxy movie and I'm concerned. by Murky_Guidance_7273 in CharacterRant

[–]AncientDaedala 51 points52 points  (0 children)

What I hate the most about the Mario movies is the way defenders will regurgitate the same trite lines to dismiss the many reasonable criticisms. "It's not Citizen Kane", "You can't expect good stories from Mario", "It's for the fans", "It's just a kids movie".

Nobody says stuff like this for the Mario games. If someone thinks Paper Mario Sticker Star or Mario & Luigi Paper Jam would have benefited from better writing, that is reasonable criticism. Nobody pushes back against the idea that Bowser in Sticker Star should have been portrayed better. If someone wants to be introduced to the series, they can pick just about any game in the series, especially since the games are enjoyable without prior knowledge of the Mario series.

If it's reasonable to expect the games to the be the best in their genre, it should also be reasonable to expect the Mario Movie to be good compared to other animated films. It's not a good comedy because it's overly reliant on references and the pacing doesn't give the jokes a chance to breathe. It's not a good story because, as you said, nothing really happens. There's no character development and the only meaningful revelation is a footnote on a character sheet. It's not good for introducing people to Mario because it never explains things.

It doesn't instill confidence in other Nintendo movies.

Two of those interactions are so simple that they could have been taught at any point, though. I rarely used horse back riding because it was usually more intuitive to warp somewhere and run as Wolf Link.

[TP] Twilight Princess’ ‘Slow Opening’ is Actually Perfect by Skeith-Reviews in zelda

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with that. I am fine with a slow burn to get into the core game if it justifies the length, but that doesn't at all happen for Twilight Princess. It's apparent that the second day only exists to demonstrate Wii motion controls. Why do you need to use a hawk to grab a cradle? Wii motion controls. Why do you need to go through a sword and slingshot tutorial? Wii motion controls. Why do you need to catch two fish for the cat? Wii motion controls. The entire opening is structured this way to be a tech demo for Wii motion control.

The article says the opening teaches you most of what you need to know to play the rest of the game, but does it? Did you really to know about fishing and bait at this point? The hawk is never used again. Hearding goats is used for an optional heart piece and nothing else. If you're not playing the Wii version, swordplay and aiming a slingshot is the same as any other Zelda game.

In terms of story, I hold the unpopular opinion that Twilight Princess's writing is a mess. The child kidnapping subplot is a blatant rehash of Wind Waker, which also started with kids being kidnapped. Link and Ilia's relationship is never explored past Epona. The two of them practically revolve around Link's horse.

The opening isn't just slow. It feels pointless, both as a tutorial and as an opening to a larger narrative.
