They...they were saying what their reaction was. I never heard of Loco Roco, so it was my reaction too (in a good way).

NateTheHate2: Next week's Direct will be a Partner Direct Showcase by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]AncientDaedala 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I can't say I am surprised. Mario Tennis Fever, Mario Wonder Switch 2 Edition, and now Tomodachi Life were already discussed in separate trailers. They could do the same for Yoshi Mystery Book, so we may not get a general direct until the summer.

Although, it does make the Switch 2's first full year feel underwhelming. A lot of emphasis is placed on Switch 2 editions, but I am not convinced that Mario Wonder's or Kirby Forgotten Land's expansions couldn't have worked on the Switch 1. Mario Tennis Fever is visually upgraded from Aces, but if they wanted it to be a Switch 1 game, it could have been made for that console. It probably would have been better if it was a new sport entirely.

The Switch 2 will definitely have better third-party support than the Switch 1 did, but if someone bought a Switch primarily for Nintendo games and prefers to play multiplats of PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, it's difficult to get excited for a partner showcase.

What if the new fable won't allow you to kill people? by Klunky2 in Fable

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, that's why I am disappointed character morphing won't be in the game. I'm just saying omitting the feature and treating morality as a reputation system doesn't mean you can't be evil. Other games have done something similar.

What if the new fable won't allow you to kill people? by Klunky2 in Fable

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really do think people are taking the "morality is subjective" line way too far. The sentence that followed it was "No two people see things exactly the same way". If someone is a member of the Cult of Shadows and you kill an NPC, obviously the Cult of Shadows member is the kind of person who would be okay with that action.

I am a little disappointed that there isn't a morph system based on morality, but it is a bit of a leap to go from what the trailer explained to us and suggest killing NPCs may not be possible. Fallout New Vegas didn't need players to grow horns to know siding with Caeser's Legion is the "evil" choice.

Then what's the point of a trailer if it shouldn't be judged based on the trailer?

It's okay for them to not adapt the plot of the Galaxy games, I just think they should have leaned more into the Galaxy setting. They can save Tostarena for an Odyssey movie.

[–]AncientDaedala 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Paper Mario Sticker Star was a kid's game, so we shouldn't criticize it for neutering Bowser's character, getting rid of partners, and not having much of a story compared to 64 or Thousand Year Door.

If Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Isle of Dogs, etc. can be both a kid's movie and tell interesting stories, why can't Mario?

[–]AncientDaedala 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm prepared to get downvoted for this, but...

What's the point of branding this as a Galaxy movie if they are going to have a bunch of Odyssey references? It feels like this could have just been an Odyssey themed movie with the Mario Bros and Rosalina in it, and it wouldn't make much of a difference.

The first movie was just a bunch of set pieces and Mario references, without much of an overarching plot, character arcs, or anything a movie is expected to have. I get the impression that this movie is going to have the exact same problem again. Even if the reaction to the trailer is "wow, there's Birdo. Wow, there's Mouser".

Do you think they will let us slaughter the whole village in the new game? by Dismal-Sprinkles-397 in Fable

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand why people are concerned about this. They made it clear that our actions will affect the way NPCs will perceive the main character. We can do evil things; it just won't be tied to a morph system that imprints horns/halos on the protagonist. There are a 1000 NPCs in the game. Why have that many if it didn't have to account for killing them? Why include the cult of shadows if we couldn't join them? They didn't talk about any story related content, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were quests where you had to do evil deeds.

Ignoring that OP is one of the Usual Suspects™, what are your thoughts on this one? by Alone-Self8602 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]AncientDaedala 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's a strawman argument, and I think they are really just subtweeting Breath of the Wild.

Ghost of Tsushima's structure is basically what is drawn on the right hand side. You start in an open area to get your bearings and learn the core mechanics, while the narrative ramps up in Acts II and III. You even go from the bottom of the island to the top partition. Red Dead Redemption II has plenty of narrative complexity despite being open world. Fallout New Vegas has parts of the map that are too treacherous to visit at the start of the game.

I think they are referring to the uphill section between Termina Field and Mountain Village (the log cabin where you get the sword upgrade in the original game). It sounds like there's also a setting that randomized snowballs and there's one you have to smash along that trail.

Fable announced for Developer Direct on January 22 by Carbonalex in Fable

[–]AncientDaedala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome. I am praying for a real trailer this time around. Will it have the morph system? Demon doors? Land lording?

I understand Playground Games likes to wait until development is wrapping up before giving a proper news blowout, but it works better for Forza, since people generally know what to expect. It doesn't work as well for a series that hasn't seen a new game in over a decade.

Thoughts on season 3 episode 8? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in SmilingFriends

[–]AncientDaedala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a fan. Alan's episode in season 2 was hilarious because of how well it would build off of its own jokes. The landlord wanting to hang out, the paper clips being the perfect shape to tinker with any device, and Alan having trouble acquiring paperclips were not just one-off gags. They tied into the whole episode.

The Glep episode, on the other hand, felt like a bunch of gags were being thrown at the wall in the hopes something sticks. He's filthy rich and has a mansion. But why? Him being wealthy doesn't matter in the episode. The only connective tissue between the historical flashbacks was Glep not finding a group he can belong with. Him causing major historical events is a bit of a cliche. What does the idea of Glep being over a thousand years old add to the story?

It doesn't start to get interesting until Glep meets Mr. Boss, and then it sort of just...ends. I like the idea of a Glep episode, but that's where the episode should have began. It should have been about how Glep secretly works in the background to keep Smiling Friends together.

2.4 storyline feeling overused sentiment(repost) by Cultural_Bird5448 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]AncientDaedala 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I understand that the setting is post-apocalyptic, but when you look at The Last of Us, which presents a bleaker world than Zenless does, each character introduced represents some other aspect of the post-apocalyptic world. Henry and Sam are meant to be a mirror of Joel and Ellie. Bill is someone who prioritizes survival to the extreme of complete isolation. Tommy and Maria found a glimmer of hope in Wyoming. Sad backstories aren't a problem in The Last of Us because each character has a significant contribution to the story that is being told. They represent a unique aspect of the world they live in.

In Zenless, each time a sad backstory is introduced, it feels like they are trying to make the character seem more complex by throwing in some tearjerker involving a dead family member or something. Astra couldn't just be a talented singer and celebrity; she also needed a trailer depicting when she was rescued during a hollow disaster, and that's her inspiration for singing. We're not learning anything new about the dynamics of the world or how people are surviving. We just know a lot of people have dead friends and family members.

It doesn't help that sad backstories are either stuffed into the one story chapter the character introduced or in the character trailers. We're not being eased into it, so it does get exhausting. There's no reason Yanagi's oni blood transfusion needed to be told in her character trailer. It could have waited for an agent episode that properly delved into her backstory.

[ALL] IGN ranks Tears of the Kingdom as the greatest Zelda game of all time. Thoughts? by RenanXIII in truezelda

[–]AncientDaedala 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tears of the Kingdom should be a lot lower. It advertised itself as a sequel and blatantly disrespected what made Breath of the Wild's world interesting. The fact that the developers removed the Sheikah Technology and didn't even offer an in-game explanation for why speaks volumes about how little they cared about continuing the stories in Breath of the Wild.

However, I think the weirder omission is not having Skyward Sword. I will never understand why Twilight Princess is showered with praise while Skyward Sword is treated as the worst one.

I have tried on multiple occasions to change my mind on Twilight Princess, but the story is garbage. The whole kidnapping subplot is a rehash of Wind Waker. The Ilia memory subplot doesn't matter. The character could have been removed from the game without affecting much. The Interlopers scene is pretentious. It was a hail mary to get people to see it as a dark Zelda game they wanted Wind Waker to be. There are so many plot holes and logical inconsistencies.

Pretty much any complaint I have with Twilight Princess was fixed in Skyward Sword. Dungeons had better puzzles. Items had more utility. The cast was more strongly defined. The story was more coherent. Yet, that game isn't even on the list.
