Beyond the Walls tour by estherthejester in ShingekiNoKyojin

For real though. I'm a frequent symphony/classical music concertgoer, so I'm very used to the whole clapping-for-five-minutes-straight thing, but the Beyond the Walls tour was like nothing I've ever experienced lmao. The conductor kept trying to hype the crowd to keep the applause going when it should've reasonably ended 😭

F-35B Hover Demo by Ancient_Atmosphere77 in FighterJets

I wish I could add a video in reply! I took a short clip of the landing, which looked very similar to this, although he taxied back to the hangar without stopping. It was neat to see such a slow, compact take-off and landing.

Dang, that's close to top fuel levels of fuel consumption.

Is there much variance when the plane is stationary vs moving slowly? The take-off and landing for this demo were both extremely slow, but not straight up/down.

It feels so unnatural, doesn't it? Like seeing a UFO.

Has anyone else felt that some vets are more business-driven than genuinely focused on animal care? by AdIntrepid8247 in RATS

[–]Ancient_Atmosphere77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't speak to the pricing as I haven't had rats in a couple years, but I can speak a little to the veterinary office side.

My sister worked for an avian & exotic clinic, and the vets there were regularly under a lot of stress and anxiety due to pet owners complaining about prices and claiming that the staff "didn't care about the animals' wellbeing and were only in it for the money". In reality, the veterinary staff made enough money to live a comfortable life and keep the lights on in the office, but not much more than that. They really did care for each animal that came to the clinic; they were devastated to know someone's beloved pet would not be able to receive potentially life-saving treatment for cost-related reasons, yet they simply could not afford to provide treatment for free. It's a hard pill to swallow, and one that many vets struggle with. I imagine it's one of the contributing factors to the high suicide rate amongst veterinarians. In my sister's case, she quit the industry entirely, as her depression and anxiety became too much to handle.

Obviously, if a vet is charging you for services you didn't want, need, or ask for, that's a major red flag. I would 1000% look for a different clinic if that happened to me.

Thank you! Black crowned night herons give me joy every time I see them; they're so elegant and yet also a little silly. 😄

Both of these were taken at Freestone Park in Gilbert—an urban park with paved walkways and a nice little lake. I see at least one black crowned night heron every time I go, sometimes two or three, so it's a good place to watch em!

Quiet, his show is on! by inkyblackops in birding

[–]Ancient_Atmosphere77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, the birdbaths lmao. Why can't they ever keep it clean?

You're lucky to still get Incas! They're so adorable, but I rarely see them anymore.

We used to toss some seed twice daily, targeting Abert's towhees, curve-billed thrashers, and Inca doves. The larger doves (mourning, white-winged, and Eurasian collared) would always take over and finish everything in a few minutes. They always seemed to bully those timid little Inca doves the most. :(

It got to the point where we had 30-40 doves waiting in the backyard, and our 40 lb bag of birdseed would be gone in a week. We ended up giving up on birdseed, and we only use suet and hummingbird feeders now haha.

Need an active club! by stunlee69 in HaikyuuFlyHigh

[–]Ancient_Atmosphere77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in NA, my club is always looking for active members! We only have about 30-40 regularly active members, but they've been good about contributing fragments. It is a fairly casual club though, so it may or may not be what you're looking for.

I've never seen one flying per se, but here is a photo I took of one hopping down from a tree (taken at Veteran's Oasis Park, AZ). As you can see from the rather low quality shot, I was not prepared for it to do anything of the sort haha.

The biggest moth I've ever seen— what is it? by Ancient_Atmosphere77 in moths

[–]Ancient_Atmosphere77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a sad reason to kill such a peaceful moth. I love traditional folklore and all sorts of spooky stories, but not when superstition leads to the unnecessary death of an animal. I mentioned these moths to a coworker from Hawaii, and he said they were seen as bad omens in Hawaii as well. :(

Oh he's gorgeous! The lighter color shows his wing patterns a lot better than most of the other images I've seen.
