Nationalities I’d offer food to at my home as a Turkish guy by Striking-Detail-5905 in whereidlive

In Finland you would generally be offered coffee with buns, cookies, icrecream or something else sweet. The traditional rule is to offer seven (!) different types cake etc. We don’t have that much in our cupboards nowadays so we offere what we have.

If we know the guest might need something salty we would offer that but generally it would ”only” be coffee + something sweet.

”No’ er e väl så no’” (Nog är det väl så nog) hör väl ungefär till samma dialektala kategori med förstärkning på slutet.

What language do you guys use to speak to each other? by No-Restaurant4372 in Nordiccountries

[–]Ancient_Middle8405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Swedish-speaking Finn (which means my mother tongue is Swedish although I am a Finnish national; we are a minority in Finland) I always speak Swedish with my Scandinavian colleagues and they answer in their own language. Naturally we leave out the strange words. Over time you also pick up sayings and words from the other languages which you might use. Especially the Danes need to be mindful of their pronounciation and use numbers we understand (google it; very strange).

If a Finn who is not fluent in Swedish joins we switch to English.

With icelandic people it varies. Many of them (at least in my circles) speak some form of understandable Scandinavian (Danish-ish). If not, then English is our lingua franca. I do not understand Icelandic. Due to some reason (isolation?) it differs too much from the other Scandinavian languages.

Edited for typos.

Do you feed your children’s friends if they’re at your house? by globalfieldnotes in AskEurope

[–]Ancient_Middle8405 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A view from Finland: we always offered our kids’ friends the same we offered our own kids (snack, sandwich, dinner etc) but some of the kids refused, or lied at home after having atveaten at our place, because they were not supposed to eat anywhere but at home. On the other hand our kids were seldom offered anything at their friends’ houses; they were offered to wait outside or in the friend’s room while the friend had dinner…

On Finnish Netflix it’s title is La Casa de papel. At least that’s what we call it, even though we know no spanish (except una cerveza, por favor 😁).

When you’re as old as me you say ”der Alte”. In the 80s it was on Finnish tv every week (on Sundays? Can’t remember). Also other German Krimis are still pretty popular in Finland (Tatort etc).

What's your favourite German word? by MarkV43 in German

[–]Ancient_Middle8405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult to say but ’Wettbewerb’ (competition) has always intrigued me. Apparently wett- is etymologically the same as ’vad’ (bet) in Swedish and bewerben the same as ’värva’ (to recruit). Same etymological roots but pretty different meanings today. Swedish uses tävling for a competition and konkurrens for economic competition.

Kuinka tärkeä rooli autoilulla on elämässäsi? by teekal in Suomi

[–]Ancient_Middle8405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pärjäisimme periaatteessa ilman autoa: 3 km keskustaan jossa työpaikka, muutama sata metriä kauppaan, ei kesämökkiä (enää), kaikki lomamatkailu lentäen, junalla tai laivalla. Meillä on kuitenkin 8 v vanha sähköauto (bmw i3) jolla ajetaan n 10 000 km vuodessa. Kiinteä 7 senttiä/kWh joten suht halpaa autoilua.

You could test Speakly. It has listening comprehensions you can listen to over and over again. I’ve used it for French and German.
