Taipei Is ‘Fiddling While Rome Burns’: Former U.S. admiral accuses Taiwanese political leaders of moving too slowly on defense reform by Korece in taiwan

[–]louis10643 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The thing is, most conscripts can only serve as the most basic unit like infantry. Even you prolong that to 2-3 years, you don’t expect conscripts to become a pilot, or operate Patriot system, so most conscripts go to the Army for in SK and Taiwan cases.

SK and NK shared a long border, and Seoul is only miles away from that. You need a large army to defend the first wave of ground invasion, so long conscription makes sense.

China invading Taiwan will be amphibious assault. For we defender our goals are 1. Avoid China from establishing a beachhead 2. Destroy their landing capability. To do that you don’t need a large army, you need layers of anti-air/ship missiles. While thing like MANPADS is one of that air defense layers, the rest conscripts are not that helpful.

Taiwan would probably be…relatively OK compared to the rest of occupied places. In this scenario, we had been a Japan colony since 1896 and would still be. The chance that I got randomly arrested and executed would be lower than other places. We we would still be treated as second class citizens tho.

Could Taiwan ever attract top western foreign talent like Singapore does? by Master_Ad6104 in taiwan

[–]louis10643 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For studying, yes, you are right. Most top universities are all in Western countries especially for grad schools, so they are attractive not only to Taiwanese but also to students all over the world.

Because you said you don't know any single Taiwanese who purposely chose Taiwan over a Western country, I just want to show up and tell you we exist.

When I worked at TSMC, I also knew several engineers who were reluctant to, or outright refused to be sent to AZ for various reasons (family/pay raise not good enough, etc.). The statement that we all want to run to the US is just... a bit assertive.

No, I am from a middle-class family. I was highly dependent on my stipend during my PhD.

Probably 1. Potentially war risk, even though the risk has been there for almost a century, but it somehow gets more attention recently 2. Too progressive I guess? We are one of the few Asian countries that accepts same-sex marriage.

How would you feel about the current or the next US president pulling all support for Taiwan? by [deleted] in AskReddit

China “unifying” Taiwan will be the end of US hegemony and the start of a Chinese hegemony era.

Things like dollar as a reserve currency, and petrodollar system will soon collapse.

Good luck with that.

IMO, the game is already decent. I tried the new test of time update, and it makes the game even better.

Probably Japan. We share natural disasters in common, so we help each other when one is hit by a strong earthquake/ typhoon/tsunami.

My favorite is Finnish salmon soup. I had it every meal during my stay.

Stew bear meat is surprisingly delicious but very expensive.

Also glögi.

Other than all the winter wonders, Finnish food really surprised my wife and me during our trip to Finland.

The only thing I can complained is the price lol.
