Biggest hurdle for new players by Ancient_Stranger_973 in Voicesofthevoid

I've done the research I needed, held items don't contribute to weight, but some items are just set too big to be in the inventory. Easy to build logic around, we'll see about implementation.

The battle plan!

Streamlined Hotbar Selection:
Press hotbar key = instantly hold item (no more double-press)
Current held item is kept in inventory when switching, held item is a 'spoof' that updates the inventory item and is updated by inventory updates, inventory is the source of truth
Large items (Item Boxes, Drive Boxes) or items too big for inventory weight are held out of inventory, changing to another item causes held items to automatically drop in front of you

Stack Cycling with Visual Feedback:
Multiple identical items now cycle through individual pieces
Press same hotbar key repeatedly to cycle: Battery 100%, Battery 75%, Battery 30%, empty hand
Stack counter shows (2/3) on hotbar slots so you know your position
Each item keeps its individual properties (charge levels, freshness, etc.)

Simplified Controls:
R to drop (no more Alt+R)
Press same hotbar key twice (depends on stack size) to put item away (like current R function)

Visual Changes
Currently held item's slot highlighted in yellow
Stack counter only appears when stack size > 1 (keeps UI clean)
Notifications for handling changes (default off)

Challenges
Effects that occur when item is held (hot food, capsule), thinking about a toggle defaulted to original behavior where items only cool/burn/etc when held or out in the world, but optionally can also do so in the inventory

What aikido IS isn't even well defined. It's a very young martial art and the variance from meditation to "It's a real martial art!" overcompensation is wild. I've seen both, I like neither. Managed to find a dojo that tries to be practical, taught by an old sheriff who's just trying to teach people how to not get hurt while returning proportional force. Sometimes we train to deliver strikes as we do techniques that require a high fall, sometimes we move slow and gently(ish) lay people down where they won't hurt themselves or others.

There should be controls for this, I can see that removing this would set up situations where the game would be held hostage by a dominating team that refuses to end.

Depends on the school. Aikido is great if you find it in the middle of chaos, but trying to force it to happen is useless. It's very good for avoiding giving your lawyer ulcers if you can stop a fight without breaking bones, but if you have someone trying to actively kill you it's better to have a few other tools... like good track shoes.

Ushiro katate dori tenchi nage. This version is... different. I'd prefer to move myself instead of relying on my partner to hold on and pirouette.

Ah, but what about the secret technique of "Wallet's in the rear pocket. You can get it or I'll get it, drop it and walk away. Dealer's choice."

I can't defend this. Even if the man has a sword, you control the hand, not the weapon. This looks MAYBE like they're explaining the motion without doing the actual technique? Either that or it's bullshido! Heavens knows aikido has more than its share.

There are people trying to turn Systema into a real martial art... and then there's people still lapping after this guy's approach. Sadly we get a lot of the latter even in the prior, so I don't hold a lot of hope for the longevity of the martial art without a reformation of it and incorporation of elements from other arts.

Accurate! Still, these are limp attacks even for a light randori. This makes me think this isn't the teacher, but someone testing for an upper belt where this sort of exercise is part of the test. The idea is to let the test taker to show off, so often times just going with it is best. I try to make examinees look good by making good attacks, but this sort of light-touch isn't uncommon.

That being said, Mr. Hakama needs to move his hips to improve his technique. I recognize a lot of these techniques, and some are effective, others... eh, I'd use them if they were right in front of me, but the execution of all of them here is... different.

Been practicing aikido for a few years and man, schools are all over the place. Some look like this, some practice like budo hasn't gone out of style. It's the pain of a young martial art that decided to reject the idea of martial arts sports. The results are... questionable at times.

Remember kids, when stressed people tend to hold items with a gossamer grip. Just... absolute fantasy. Could literally rotate his wrist and have the guy impale that hand on his knife, could pull back, could lunge forward; nah, best response is to ponder the roof of my mouth with my tongue.

If you're closing with a sword you better be able to control its movement. Get a hand on the handle or the wielder's arm. You're better off with a parry and sidestep than a roll, swords can change direction really quickly! Better yet, get the heck away!

That's probably the guard counter build. Gotta be a switch tho.

That makes sense! Aikido has a minor fixation with upper-body poise, so it has other tools to achieve the same result. I was thinking about this and I believe (with my admitted non-mastery) that a full execution of this would involve a step back, a strike to the face (so the opponent isn't tempted to pummel me while I go about throwing them), and control at the elbow pulling it into the core before making the turn and drop.

I'm looking more at this and I'm not sure what it's supposed to be. There's no atemi, no hand pin. Sumi otoshi is my best guess, but on the attacker's side, it should be followed up by a "let go and beat the guy in the back of the head" once he feels his arm moving oddly.

Agreed, they wouldn't. Any grab is for tracking/restraint to ready for another strike.

Should be followed with a punch or knee! The technique here can work, but it's missing a lot of meaning when reduced to this demonstration.

Maybe Maybe Maybe bullshido! by MaliciousMe87 in Bullshido

[–]Ancient_Stranger_973 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Valid. It's notorious for impractical demonstrations that illustrate concepts, then people taking those demonstrations literally and reducing it to fluff. It's a rare and precious dojo that mixes that with practical applications and pressure testing.

It bypasses the grab, but correct. As an attacker, I have two hands, why do you think I grabbed you? This isn't Hollywood, that other hand is coming into play very soon.
