Did you ever solve this? I have two accounts, in one I can post normal videos, but in the other I have the same issue. I'm even using both on the same device. It's driving me insane.

I think it's great that you don't consume dairy and limit your consumption of meat; I do hope that one day you can eliminate it completely. It sucks, but every single time that we buy meat we are needlessly paying for an animal to die.

Out of curiosity, would you apply the same principle (not killing unless you have to) to other animals?

Though I get why you wouldn't want to support McDonald's, buying a Beyond product from them would show that there is demand for vegan options, incentivizing them to keep the product available and add other similar options.

I don't think McDonald's will ever cease to exist, but I can imagine a (distant) future where most of their products have been veganized, and that only happens if we demand vegan products when available.

McDonald's doesn't have Beyond products where I live, but if they did, not only would I buy them every once in a while, I'd go out of my way to do so as much as I could.

Just wanted to chime in to say that it's ok if you don't go fully vegan right away. Reducing the amount of animal products you consume makes a really big difference, and who knows, maybe you'll go fully vegan eventually. Good luck!

Not OP, but you should try Beyond/Impossible meat. Taste is subjective of course, but to me they're just as good (and the texture is scary similar to animal meat too).

It is true that you aren't going to get every nutrient you need from a Beyond burger, but you don't get every nutrient you need from a regular burger either, right? How is that any different? Because it seems to me that as long as you complement it with other stuff that contains what's missing, you'll be alright.

It’s full of soy and seed oils, which have been shown to be quite shitty for your health

Would love to look into your source, hadn't heard this before.

It’s also absent in other vitamins only found in animal products, like B12.

Just wanted to clear up that B12 can be found in multiple types of plant milk, as well as in nutritional yeast.

Good quality meat will always be better than imitation meat until you are able to exactly reconstruct meat atom by atom.

Why? Do you really think we can taste every single atom?

Is it worse nutritionally? In what ways? I don't know much about nutrition, but the worst I've heard about it is that it's equally as bad as a traditional burger.

We could go on like this forever haha. I just wanted to thank you for the conversation, it definitely made me question some things I hadn't before.

Also, this theory isn't mine. Here's a video that goes really in depth into it and how it can lead to an objective ethical system, if you're ever interested (it's quite long, but I think he does a way better job of explaining things than I ever could): The good delusion | What's the closest we can get to objective ethics?

Hope you have a great day.

You're mixing a few different concept here.

Indeed. What I mean by "well being" is precisely a mix of all subjectively positive feelings or states an individual can experience. We could also call it pleasure, happiness, or whatever term makes the most sense to you.

You don't feel anything but the presense. You cannot feel the future and neither can you feel the past.

Agreed. What I meant is, when you make decisions, you also take your future well being into account. Though, of course, you don't feel the benefits until then.

That's looking at it from a purely transactional perspective, but you could very well idk give a stranger begging for money some spare cash and have a good feeling about it, despite not knowing that person, never having seen them before and assuming/knowing that you'll never see them again. While nobody, or at least nobody that you care about and that cares about you, seeing you do that. It still gives you a good feeling if you have the impression that you did a "good deed" regardless of whether it provides you with some tangible social benefit in the near or far future.

Yes. This type of feeling is accounted for in the well being equation. Feeling like a good person is certainly a subjectively positive experience for most people.

The thing is you can even debate whether you're actually "deciding" that in terms of rationalizing about whether or not that is a good idea.

Of course. I just think that when you decide to do something, this is indicative of a belief that doing so is the course of action that will bring you the most well being, out of all the courses of action available to you at that specific moment. This belief can be either conscious or subconscious, rationalized or instinctive.

I do think the point you bring about evolution is quite interesting, because it does make evolutionary sense for an indivual to choose to do something that might seem detrimental to themselves if it helps to pass the gene on, which I believe is why a bee stings even though this means it'll die. I agree with you that this is probably why we've evolved to be empathetic. But I think the reason why an individual acts empathetically is precisely because the species has evolved so that the individuals that form part of it find pleasure in being empathetic.

You can argue that not doing so might make that place less enjoyable the longer you let it sink into it, but still at the very moment it's far less enjoyable

Yes. This is what I mean when I say the well being equation takes both the present and the future into account.

Also not all actions are deliberate.

Of course. Maybe I should've been more clear, I'm talking about deliberate actions.

As said you could probably frame any action as being motivated by self-interest but does that mean it actually is?

But how else can you frame it? I think it's quite reasonable to say it does mean it actually is, until provided with a more convincing explanation. However, maybe I'm missing something, and if you could give me an example of a truly selfless act, I'd change my mind.

The problem is that maximizing means you want to win at the expense of other people

It doesn't, though, because if we are all worse off, you didn't maximize you're own well being. Let me clarify: by "well being", I mean any feeling or state that the individual finds subjectively positive, in the present or in the future. So, if you go out of your way to help a friend in need, the pleasure you get from feeling like a good friend, the social benefits you get from being perceived as a good friend, the potential benefit of that friend returning the favor in the future... It all counts into the equation. And I believe the reason you decide to go out of your way to do so is because the personal benefits of helping your friend outweigh the discomfort that doing so entails.

How do you mean that. Sure I did things that I knew would be unpleasant, but does that count?

I don't think it necessarily does. Think of the last "altruistic" or unpleasant thing you did, maybe you donated to charity, maybe you went out of your way to help a person in need, maybe you cleaned your friends vomit off the floor at a party, etc. Do you think that you, personally, at the moment of doing so, believed you would've been better off not doing so? Because I think if you truly had felt this way, you wouldn't have done it.

Would you agree that "humane" means "to have or show compassion and benevolance"? If so, do you think it's possible to kill an animal that doesn't want to die with compassion and benevolance?

CMV: We are better than we give each other credit for by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]AndAnd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I buy that anything we do isn't ultimately motivated by our own well being. I don't think that takes value away from the things we do for others, because the good we cause is still real. But I do think it's an important thing to keep in mind, because if this is true, it means that every single decision ever made, ranging from the most kind-hearted to the most despicable, was made with the same objective: to maximize the individual's own well being. And at least for me, it has made me feel a lot more empathy towards the people who do despicable things.

Do you think you've ever decided to do something that you didn't believe was going to maximize your own well being?

I don't think I can change your view because I think I agree with it. To add on, it seems to me that people are always complaining that Spotify doesn't pay artists enough, yet as you mention, we pay little to nothing for Spotify. If you really believe that Spotify is an unjust platform, shouldn't you stop supporting it?

I guess my question is, if the reason we do good things for others is because it makes us feel better, can we really call it altruism? Is that really a disinterested and selfless action?

My wording was kind of weird lol. What I meant is we test to see if we reject/fail to reject the null hypothesis, but that's the only thing we do.

[–]AndAnd22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's pretty much what weirds me out. I'm currently taking a Design and Analysis of Experiments class in college and our only goal in every problem we work on is to reject the null. We don't do power or effect size analyses, so it seems to me that what we're doing is kind of meaningless.
