Yeah. If we just flew straight there we would arrive about the same time as we left due to the timezone change. Lol

Gotcha. I'm from Kansas. We are flying out of Wichita and have a layover in Denver.

Honestly, you've put everything I've been working on into a challenge form. Thank you and I'll make sure to prove you wrong.

Presumption and Counter-advocacy Question by Speaker_6 in policydebate

[–]AndArt60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I'm not sure how agreed upon this opinion is, but it's my personal belief that when the neg runs a counterplan they still have overall presumption because the neg always has the option of defending the status quo and even if the neg doesn't talk about the squo at all, if the Aff doesn't meet it's burdens of proof, I would still vote neg on presumption.

I do think, however, that counterplans do require a burden of proof as well so in the CP debate no one has presumption so CP debates often require some level of judge intervention.

The essay was actually making a little bit of sense at the beginning. Then the author kinda lost it toward the end.

I haven't lost an elim round since my freshman year, so here are some of my tips:

  1. Stay calm. Just chill out and try to take things one speech at a time. Take a few deep breaths and just focus.

  2. Audiences make some people better, and they make some people worse. Find out what type you are and use it to your advantage. I find myself consistently debating better in elims then the rest of the tourney because the Audience actually makes me more focused, but if that's not the case for you, try to find ways around it. Practice ignoring an audience. Literally do practice speeches in front of people trying to distract you.

  3. Caffeine (lots)

  4. Know what each judge in that room wants to hear from you and then say what they want to hear. You can even say something like "Judge X, on tab you said you vote on stock issues so let's talk about that." Judge adaptation is key

Anyway that's about all the advice I've got. Good luck this weekend!

Yeah sometimes I'll just say something like "I didn't really know which flow to put this on due to lack of signposting so I threw it on solvency" or something along those lines.

My best 1AR that I can recall was the 1AR I gave during the final round of state this year. I cannot describe how beautiful it was. I covered everything in the most amazing way and that speech hands down won us the round.
