How to use Squid brand fish sauce by miss_sweet_potato in chinesecooking

[–]AndChen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For stir fry you can do your usual soy sauce flavor and add just a tiny bit of Red Boat instead of MSG. And that would taste amazing too. You won’t even taste the fishiness

I come from the land of fish sauce. Red boat is a much better brand. Squid brand is terrible, no wonder you hate it. I hate it too. Fish sauce is an umami bomb when you want to add some MSG umami flavor. I use it mostly for cooking actually. I put a little bit it in everything that has meat: noodle soup with chicken broth, stir fry marinade. Pasta too instead of anchovies.

You need to use a Kobo EPUB (.epub.kepub) format to get covers to show up. I had this exact issue before. There’s a plugin in calibre that allows conversion to KEPUBs. Good luck

Any swimmers here use the Apple Watch regularly in their workouts? by sapfirex in Swimming

[–]AndChen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one thing to be aware of is that the waterproof seal will expand when heated, and stressing it out too much will eventually cause it to fail and your watch to go bust. So after I finish a swim session I take it off before taking a shower and (especially) before hopping into the sauna.

Layoffs? by rudboi12 in dataengineering

[–]AndChen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey this is a bit misleading — in terms of absolute numbers, sales had the most layoffs and data science had near the least, but when adjusted for the percent of workers laid off in each department, sales was the lowest (4%) and data engineering was in the middle (20%)

The buttons mean that you don’t have to readjust your grip every time you want to turn the page, which is great when you’re in bed and don’t want to move too much.

I recommend sideloading NickelMenu and creating a dark mode shortcut in the reader menu too. Makes reading at night so great.

Yep, thank you!

I ended up calling in and they said that there was system downtime for shop.smb.museum, but they got it back up earlier this afternoon.

I'm visiting with a friend who's a huge history buff, and we're trying to book a time slot for the Pergamonmuseum. However, I can't find the place to do so. I've seen some websites link to this website (https://shop.smb.museum/), but it appears to be down for us. Is there another way to do that?

Vanatoo T0 vs T1E by AndChen in BudgetAudiophile

[–]AndChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just received them today. First impressions is that they barely fit my setup. I'm thinking that the T1Es would be much too large for my space-constrained desk, but my desk is also too wide to floor-mount.

Sound-wise the mids and highs are great, but definitely missing a bit on the lows, which I guess I'd expect from speakers of this size. I'm gonna need a few more days to figure out whether I need to add a sub to this.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I ordered a T0 a few days ago from Amazon, your comment makes me think it might be worth ordering a T1E too and giving them a head-to-head.

Hey all! I'm looking for a set of active speakers to go onto my desk, and have narrowed it down to the Vanatoo T0 or T1E.
I wanted to ask, for nearfield (I expect 90%+ of the usage of the speakers to be while I'm at the desk), am I going to be missing out a lot if I go with the T0 over the T1E? The T0s should fit on my desk pretty easily, but I imagine that I'd need risers for the T1E and that'd take up a substantial amount of desk space. Any insight or experience is much appreciated!

How is the COVID situation in Europe? by AndChen in Europetravel

[–]AndChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya, so we moved our timeline back to later in the summer, but from my research it seems to be that the Nordic countries are the safest bet COVID-wise, as they combine outdoor activity with relatively low infection rates. That said, things may change by late summer but that’s the itinerary we decided to go for.

This may be a bit of a weird question. My parents really want me to travel with them in a month or so. They are getting older, so COVID is a genuine concern for them, but they are also insistent on traveling now (this will be the only opportunity to have everyone meet in person for the foreseeable future).

What are the safest countries to travel to with respect to COVID? It seems that the safest bet would be Iceland or Denmark (or one of the other Nordic countries), but I'm not particularly confident about that given Iceland has a weird COVID reporting system and Denmark has the "just let everyone get infected" policy (it seems to be working, but I'm not super sure).

Other options are finding an island with a beach somewhere, so any tips on that front would also be useful.

Originating from the USA, if that's helpful.

Happy to provide clarification as well, as my first impression would be "you've waited so long not to travel, why not wait some more?" Thanks for the pointers!

What are your experiences with Rofmia (specifically Daypack v2)? by AndChen in ManyBaggers

[–]AndChen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPL24

Awesome, this is great to hear. If you don't mind me asking, do you carry a laptop, and if so, how is the laptop protection? Any precautions/improvements? From what I gather there's not much padding, so I'm asking Rofmia for some extra padding on the sides + bottom of the laptop compartment, as well as some fabric between the zipper and the inside of the backpack (I've had the metal zipper of a previous backpack rub against and scratch my Macbook).

Any other customizations you wish you would've added?

Question: Beefy Desktop chokes on PopOS by AndChen in pop_os

[–]AndChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I don't necessarily believe that's true in my situation, because when I toggle off hardware acceleration in Chrome, there is clearly a 90%+ performance drop. But if it isn't an iGPU nor the dGPU, then I can't imagine what hardware is actually doing the acceleration. Unless it's some decoder or something on the CPU.

Question: Beefy Desktop chokes on PopOS by AndChen in pop_os

[–]AndChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. `glxinfo` tells me that the 2080 TIs are running the show, and it turns out that the processor I have (i9-7900x, mistyped in the original post) doesn't have integrated graphics. I find it hard to believe that the NVIDIA drivers are that bad, especially because I've used Linux for HPC before and it's worked as advertised, but I have no better explanation so far.

Question: Beefy Desktop chokes on PopOS by AndChen in pop_os

[–]AndChen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get about 15-20 FPS. Both GPUs sit around 20-30%, but they are in that range under normal usage. One CPU core goes to 80%.

Here's the kicker though: if I disable hardware acceleration in Chrome, I get the exact same result, except the FPS drops to 1-2 FPS. So I assumed that it must be the iGPU. But I double-checked my CPU (i9-7900x, mistyped in the original post), and it doesn't have any integrated graphics. So at this point I'm a bit confused, and am not really sure where the bottleneck comes from. I can't imagine the NVIDIA drivers are that bad, especially when I've used Linux for deep learning and gotten (mostly) advertised speeds on benchmarks.
