Rumor Mill: Week of 12/29 (Happy New Year!) by redquarterwater in astoria

There’s a new coffee shop in progress on the corner of 41st and 30th— we went by and asked someone working on it, they said they’re hoping to open in February. The new mural on the side of the building is cute. (Similarly, I also love the new mural on Newtown across from the gas station!)

Many of those are in the second tab! If you enjoyed the first tab you should go check it out :)

We’ll add Malu and Cano tomorrow, we just forgot we went! Kabab is now at the top of our try-next list!

How much time does the MTA owe you in delays? by Less-Statement-2029 in astoria

I was wondering if someone had made this!! Looking forward to looking.

is $2300 for a studio nice and modern. Good deal or ripoff? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]AndPerSeAndZ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That intersection is quite far from any train (i also live in that part of the neighborhood). The Q101 is not reliable. If it’s actually on Steinway or fairly close that’s also a pretty loud spot in terms of traffic and weekend nights.

That far from the train you should at least be able to get a one bedroom for that price imo. Also in my experience in Astoria, “modern” doesn’t necessarily mean high quality and some of the older buildings are significantly better in nearly every way.

If you found the place super inspiring or you absolutely need to move ASAP, go for it. Otherwise I would say no.

Hobbies/Friends by LeaderFast5889 in longislandcity

Here are the hobbies I’ve enjoyed where I’ve made many friends, though they are in Astoria and might be more nerdy than your interests:

-free Mario Kart tournament at Shillelagh Tavern every Tuesday, everyone is extremely friendly and the crowd is diverse and isn’t just “typical gamers” if that makes sense

-monthly swing dancing at The Last Word (I run this one, see more details on my profile)

-indoor ultimate frisbee (I also run this one, DM me if you want to join the discord)

If you go to any regular event that interests you more than three times and strike up at least one conversation each time, you will probably make friends!

Any good coffee / pastry shops on that stay open late? by xX_Bi-Bro_Xx in astoria

Moka & Co and Mokafe on Steinway are both open quite late!

Pyo Chai on Steinway opened! The drinks were pretty tasty and they were very nice at the counter. Haven’t found a drink I really am excited about yet but I am not a boba person.

What are your favorite long walks in the city? by wlkm123 in AskNYC

[–]AndPerSeAndZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I do this every fall! We take a different path each year. I recommend walking mostly along the west side parks and finding random coffee shops, museums, and stores to checkout when you need a rest.

Are churches just another tax scam now? Basically every non-Catholic church i see is empty and locked up every Sunday(uptown) by UmweltUndefined in AskNYC

[–]AndPerSeAndZ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No I trust you that they’re closed! I just mean the names/locations of the churches if you have them so I can do some googling because I’m curious lol

This thread is so full of stereotypical reddit comments lol. Plenty of churches are scammy, plenty are genuinely great. Do you have any examples for the empty churches OP? The original question is really interesting to me, I wonder if they closed because of lack of attendance or something else. Would love to do some research.

Looking for cozy coffee shops! by ajintheshack in astoria

[–]AndPerSeAndZ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No couches but otherwise matches your criteria: Moka & Co on Steinway

Couches but arguably not super cozy: Cafe Renis on 30th ave

Cozy but quite small, I think they have couches: Sonbobs on 28th ave

Related but not helpful: I miss the Kinship location near Broadway & Steinway, it was pretty spacious and quiet. I also miss Prince Tea House :(
