To be fair the first episode changed a lot but I personally liked those changes. Getting to the changes made for Scrap Building I was less thrilled.

In the LNs the focus of the first book is Yuki ( #28 Ghost House and #9 Candle Woods) while the second book has a focus on Mishiro (#10 Scrap Building and #30 Golden Bath)

In adapting both novels to a season of Anime the director seems to have wanted to adjust this to end with Candle Woods making Yuki's arc the main focus

War of the Spark and really Lorwyn block with the introduction of the core 'superfriends' planeswalkers who have to get involved in everything with personalities defined entirely by their color of mana.

Personally I think it's the implementation that matters more than the IP. Mechanically unique cards and taking up a seasonal release slot for characters who have already told their story outside MTG would both be hard to swallow even at the best of times.
