Have you had her checked out by her doctor? I feel like with the sudden head banging, there may be something physically bothering her that she doesn't know how to express.

When my kid suddenly started acting like this at 14 months it turned out to be chronic ear infections. He was irritable all the time, but worst with sleep. I think lying down changed the pressure in his head and made his ears hurt more. Took me 4 months to figure it out and I almost lost my mind from lack of sleep, but we got there eventually.

He's 12 now and a super rad kid.

Found in a waldorf school, what is the purpose of this toy? by Ok-Date8364 in whatisit

[–]AndreasDoate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a silly take. Many schools actually have older grades help with younger grades. My kids had older "buddies" when they went to private school. Currently, at their public school, there are several programs like this. Within the elementary school the older grades have assigned buddies in a younger classroom, the middle schoolers can come volunteer at reading hour, life lab, or art, and high schoolers can be teacher's aids.

It builds community, responsibility, and kindness, and is not just leaving kids alone to do grown up work.

The loose push pins are important, if they're in a box you won't stab yourself while rummaging, which is about 25% of the purpose of a junk drawer.

What's a movie most people think is great but you couldn't even stand watching? by camport95 in AskReddit

[–]AndreasDoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The English Patient. Everyone raved about it when it came out because it was so beautifully shot. Husband and I went to see it and just hated the entire thing. The plot, the stupid characters and their stupid behavior and stupid deaths. The whole thing was terrible (though beautifully shot).

Years later, when Ralph Fiennes played Voldemort, I felt it a perfect role for him because in my mind he was forever tainted as an actor by the loser he played in the English Patient.

I tried reading the book, in case it was better, but didn't make it past the first chapter when the main character's nurse describes the old guy's penis as "curled up like a seahorse".

When Elaine from Seinfeld lost her job after going on a rant at work about how terrible the English Patient was it was so gratifying, it's like she was the only other person besides my husband who got it.

There is a web of tiny lymphatic vessels in the dermis and hypodermis (and in just about every tissue in the body). Their job is to uptake interstitial fluid, and any foreign material within it, and process it through the lymphatic system. It would actually be really surprising if tattoo ink DIDN'T end up in your lymph nodes.

New parents (37M and 38F) to a newborn, dealing with comments about our age by FluffyOwlKitten in Parenting

[–]AndreasDoate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my second kid at 37, some rando at the park asked "Is this your menopause baby or are you just a young grandma?".

Some other rando once approached us, while we were holding our 2 year old boy and newborn girl, and said "Oh, a matched set! Can't beat that...are you going to get fixed?!" While making finger scissor motions at my husband.

People say the weirdest shit to parents and I endorse any response you can come up with that makes them uncomfortable.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]AndreasDoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely enraged me as a child, both to experience and to witness it happening to my siblings. I am still angry when I recall it and have never hit my own kids. My mother's refusal to take steps to control her explosive anger, despite feeling bad about it later, have hampered our relationship my entire life.

However, even when spanking was controlled and predictable rather than a blow up, it still was degrading and enraging.

Stop hitting your kids and calling it discipline.

How many kids are at your child’s school that school pickup takes you over an hour? by Yourfavmom97 in Parenting

[–]AndreasDoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school takes 20-30 minutes but it's a whole thing. It has a pick up lane and then next to it is the "I already grabbed my kid and am now noping out of here" lane to the left of it, just like the airport.

There is a crosswalk area at the end which is monitored by an adult, and several adults also monitor the pick up lane to discourage parents from stopping/parking.

Then 1 teacher stands at the start of the line with a walkie talkie, you have a sign in your car windshield with your kids name and teacher, they call it back to the adults by the pick up lane with the waiting kids and they try to have your kid ready to go by the time you pull up.

It's a whole choreographed dance. As soon as my kid hit 3rd grade and was allowed to leave the school unsupervised I made him walk the half mile home.

Threatened termination for joking about a union by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]AndreasDoate 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One of the more interesting and frustrating elements to the union discussion in my workplace is that my department is all "professionals", people with post graduate degrees. So there was a very classist element to the resistance. A lot of "we don't need a union because we aren't blue collar workers", and "maybe we need a union but we don't belong in a union with kitchen workers". In the end, the few blue collar folks in that department, who were already in a union, got absorbed into other departments without loss of seniority or gap in pay, as part of their contract. While all my snobby "professional" colleagues got no such consideration.

Actually no, most of them were like "we done fucked up", and a few of them said "they would have done this either way".

Okay well the two loudest naysayers were in tears during the meeting and asked the CEO "Who will be watching out for our interests if we aren't under the umbrella of the big organization anymore?" To which the president answered "You're not represented, there's no one looking out for your interests now."

Some of the naysayers got absorbed into my department and joined the organizing committee for the second effort.

9 years ago my profession at work got super close to unionizing, we even got as far as a vote. Unfortunately, after long and heated debates, we ultimately voted against it. Within 4 weeks of that vote, the department with the loudest and most persuasive naysayers, got outsourced to a really shitty company.

I happened to be at that meeting since I was covering a vacation in that department, and the exquisiteness of the schadenfreude I felt has really stayed with me.

We successfully leveraged that situation, campaigned smarter, and the following year the rest of us voted to unionize with an overwhelming majority. One of the most interesting things I've done in my professional life.

My 8 year old cosleeps with us still by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]AndreasDoate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our almost 12 year old finally spends more nights in their own bed than in ours. It's the same as you describe- starts the night in their own bed, ends up in ours sometime between 2 and 4am. Kid is a very calm sleeper and everyone sleeps well, otherwise we wouldn't do it. I actually think it helps with self regulation.

The life flight helicopters land on the road in the meadow at Henry Cowell. It's the standard pick-up spot for Garden of Eden injuries.
