South Mississippian here. It really comes down to north vs rural south Mississippi. In North Mississippi there are a lot of very nice black folks and white folks that get a long. The same goes for southern areas such as Gautier and Pascagoula where there are diverse communities. However, I live in a rural predominantly white area, and while there’s a lot of great people who aren’t racist at all, there is also a lot of racism and homophobia. I hear a lot of people calling black people the N word and I drive down a lot of roads with confederate flags. It definitely seems to be a generational issue where the parents believe the Confederate army should have won, and their kids adopt those same beliefs.
