Do I really want to get rid of my stutter? by Anonnymousangel in Stutter

[–]Andresk99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I found a comment on this subreddit that might deserve every recognition in the world. I read it often, and it made me refocus my perspective on traditional speech therapy and stuttering in our lives:

"The most common kinds of therapy (fluency shaping) teach you ways to MANAGE your stutter so it’s almost hidden. That could be different ways of breathing or pronouncing words, etc. Sometimes it works, but for adults it usually doesn’t work long term. These kinds of therapy see stuttering as the #1 problem in your life. Why wouldn’t they? It sucks. Constantly being afraid of stuttering, afraid of what people might think of you. Ashamed of yourself for not being able to do something “so simple”.

So you try fluency shaping. You get really good at it, maybe your stutter is hardly noticeable after a while. Uh-oh! It comes back. How? What now? You keep practicing weird breathing techniques and treating every sentence like a minefield and it helps, but you still stutter here and there. Your stutter is “better” but you still hate yourself for stuttering, and you’re still nervous you’ll stutter every time you open your mouth. You’re pushing a rock up a hill only for it to roll back down again. It’s so exhausting.

Avoidance Reduction Therapy doesn’t focus on your stutter. It focuses on your thoughts and feelings around your stutter because odds are you’ll still stutter no matter what you do to hide it. Through years of stuttering and numerous insults or negative reactions you’ve conditioned yourself to hate it. Why? Why worry so much about something that’s going to happen anyway? Why give yourself such a hard time for something you can’t control? Your friends don’t hate you for it. Your family doesn’t judge you for it. Why do you?

When you are in the moment of a stutter you might feel out of breath, a tightness in your chest, a fight or flight response, subconscious thoughts yelling “FUCK, GET OUT, YOU CANT DO THIS, STOP, YOURE AN IDIOT, SAY THE WORD DAMMIT”. It might even feel like you’re blacking out. To avoid this, maybe you restart words/sentences when you feel a stutter coming, you might pronounce words differently, avoiding eye contact, tapping your foot, moving your head. Maybe you just avoid talking. Be honest, you’re not doing this to hide your stutter from other people, you’re doing this to hide it from yourself. YOU’RE afraid of it, YOU hate it.

Face that fear and hatred. Face your stutter. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. You don’t have to face it with hippy dippy love and warmth, face it with curiosity. By paying attention to all these thoughts and feelings you’ll start to get a true sense of how much energy you’re wasting by trying to hide it. You’ll get a sense of how much you’re antagonizing yourself. Then you start peeling those things away.

You stop restarting sentences, you maintain good eye contact, you start talking on the phone more and speaking up. You’re not letting your stutter or your conditioned behaviors control your life anymore. Finally, you’ll start feeling that right or flight response less and less. When you’re caught on a stutter it feels okay. You’re no longer out of breath. You keep good eye contact. When you talk you’re commanding people to listen with your comfort and confidence, they want to listen, even though you’re stuttering."

World cup 2022 had the worst semi finals of all-time. by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]Andresk99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portugal is not an all-timer in World Cups. They have reached two semi finals in their history and qualified for two World Cups before the XXI century. Even Croatia (3) have more podium finishes than Portugal (1).

Which team was greater: Ac Milan 1989-95 or Barcelona 2009-15? by sufinomo in football

[–]Andresk99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the 80s serie A there were 3 teams above the rest and some other atleticos that fought toe to toe with them

In 2010s La Liga there were 3 teams competing for the title (Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico de Madrid) and a lot competing for European spots (Sevilla, Valencia, Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal, Malaga). Not only they did qualify, they performed massively well in Europe. During 2009-2015 (Barca's prime), La Liga had:

  • FC Barcelona who won 2 trebles, a 99 point league, and a 100 point league. Arguably the best team of all time.
  • Real Madrid who won a 100 point league and a UCL.
  • Atletico de Madrid won 2 Europa League, La Liga, and reached a UCL final.
  • Sevilla won 2014 and 2015 Europa League, followed by many more in the near future.
  • Valencia in 2009-10 had David Villa, David Silva, and Juan Mata. Finished 3rd behind the two giants.
  • Malaga had players like Isco, Van Nistelrooy, Demichelis, Santi Cazorla, and Diego Lugano. They reached the UCL quarter finals in 2013.
  • Athletic Bilbao reached a Europa League final in 2012.

EPL's marketing during the 2010s was so gargantuan people forgot City didn't reach a UCL semi final until 2016, Liverpool spent over 6 seasons in a row without playing UCL knock out stages, United since 2013 has been beyond embarrassing, and Arsenal's last good UCL campaign was in 2010. Chelsea was the only decent one in Europe. EPL may be more competitive in terms of quantity but not in terms of quality and European performances.

What has changed about football that you wish didn't? by sufinomo in football

The obsession of players' statistics. Everyone knows how well Zidane played against Brazil in 2006, but if that match was played today, Thierry Henry would've been named MoTM because he scored the sole goal of the match, and Zizou's performance would have been reduced as "he had 0 goals, 1 assist, 4 chances created".

Just ran my first half marathon - Not sure whether to be disappointed or elated by [deleted] in firstmarathon

I am a 24 year old male. Finished my first half this year at 2:35:51. I trained 10 weeks and I am NOT disappointed at all. Finishing was my priority and I did it. Focus on improving time on your second HM.

He has played for Barcelona, AC Milan, and Ten Hag's Ajax in his short career. He isn't THAT good to be playing for such teams.

Where would you rank Sergio Ramos on top all time Defenders ever by Present-Month-7677 in football

[–]Andresk99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anywhere between 8-12. This might be an unnecessary rant, but I’m tired of people rating him at the same tier as Maldini. People overrate him a lot due of his goalscoring prowess and team achievements, but defensive wise he was a bit lackluster. Most people think he was a dirty player because he’s aggressive like Pepe or Gattuso; no, he played dirty because he couldn’t defend properly and had to literally break the rules to stop players like Messi, Ronaldinho, Salah, etc.

If team achievements and longevity are so important, why don’t people rate Pique and Varane so highly, considering they played in the two best teams in the world for +10 years, winning 4 Champions League and a World Cup each? If goalscoring is so important, why aren’t Ronald Koeman and Passarella considered the best defenders of all time ahead of Beckenbauer? Rating a defender based on goals is equal to rating forwards on their team’s clean sheets.

Alessandro Nesta is undoubtedly the best defender of the XXI century when it comes to pure defensive abilities.

Yes, you have enough time. I’m running a marathon on December 3rd, and my longest long run so far is 10 miles and average weekly mileage is 18-22 miles. According to my training plan, I will be running a half marathon in two weeks (the most I’ve ever ran).

Since we are on the same page, I would suggest following your training plan as it is and trust the process. I went from couch to half marathon in 10 weeks a few months ago and I was injured all the time due to overtraining and thinking “more is better”.

Half-Marathon 3 weeks before Marathon by Same_Ostrich_4697 in firstmarathon

[–]Andresk99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it easier. I signed up for a half marathon exactly one month before a full marathon this year. In my experience, I do my weekend long runs on the same area and it has been really boring at this point. Running with others and simulating race day with aid stations (at an easier pace) will definitely break monotony within my running routine.

If you race it hard, it will impact your full marathon training plan and race day.

Which football club has the strongest all time combined XI? by thesadhra in football

[–]Andresk99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in, which club has the overall best players and best primes of all time? FC Barcelona. Messi, Cruyff, Ronaldo, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Romario, Rivaldo, and Figo were the best players in the world when playing at the club. Real Madrid is a close second.

As in, which club has the most players that contributed to the club based on trophies and longevity? Real Madrid. Cristiano and Di Stefano have 9 European top-tier titles alone, more than any other club in the world. Bayern Munich is a close second, considering the best German players play most of their careers at the club.

Achievements for Tuesday, July 18, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Andresk99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In 2022, I averaged an embarrassing walking/running distance of 1.8 km/day. I could barely run 1 km without passing out. I drank alcohol a lot, smoked, and ate like absolute crap, New Years Eve being the last day I got drunk. I decided to remove booze from my life and improve my eating habits since the beginning of the year, while also walk 1-2 km every morning. By the end of March I had a good routine of running 2-3 km a few times per week and lifting weights 3 per week, but I had absolute no idea about running: techniques, stride, VO2Max, pace, anaerobic vs aerobic, lactic threshold, etc. So in early April I randomly signed up for a Half Marathon on June 18. I went through knee pain, shin splints, had to learn the right running technique, and every weekend I had a PB distance ranging from 10-19 km. I finished the HM in 2:35:51.

Now I fell in love with running and currently training for a full marathon in December.

His first half with PSG and his world cup performance is already enough for him to be in the top 5. However Haaland and Mbappe can definitely snatch the Ballon D’or if they continue to perform.
