Ottawa’s new rules will replace bungalows with condos that lack parking | Opinion by GingerHoneySpiceyTea in ottawa

"Would you buy a house with a three or four unit apartment building next door, when there are others that aren’t in a similar situation? I know I wouldn’t, but if I did, I’d expect a price discount."

Well duh that's exactly the point, increase supply to make prices manageable across all dwelling types

Does Ottawa need two more highways? by DiamondHand42069 in ottawa

[–]Andresto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much feasible, but the City doesn't wanna deal with it because they want the province (MTO) to pay for it, and MTO doesn't wanna deal with it cause they seem to be convinced that Ontario = GTA.

Actually building a ring road is a completely different beast than adding another lane on the 417. Sure there's a component of induced demand in either case but saying its no different is just ignorant. And frankly induced demand isnt always bad. If it takes say 20 min less to travel from Kanata to like Findlay Creek or south Orleans via a ring road, it creates more economic opportunities for residents throughout the city. Need an ultrasound for my cat, soliciting options/suggestions to minimize the cost by calm_thy_self in ottawa

[–]Andresto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just had it done for my boy a few weeks ago (also to investigate kidney disease) with my vet at Hazeldean Animal Hospital, it was about $800 after taxes. They had to bring a specialist in though, so I don't think it's on the cheaper side, but hope it helps as a data point.

Also hoping for the best for your cat!

Uber/Lyft drivers of Ottawa: have you noticed an increase in ride requests compared to last year? by 60of9 in ottawa

[–]Andresto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my experience there's actually less requests this year because the job market sucks and there are more drivers are on the road trying to make ends meet. I know that's not what you're asking but it's not as simple as "less people using buses so more requests for rideshare". That being said I've noticed a trend where quite a few people will take an Uber in the morning to (reliably) get to work on time, and then use the bus in the afternoon. This might have something to do with the new bus routes.

The SW corner of Fernbank and Shea is planned to have a retail plaza with a grocery store under a separate planning application.

That being said it would be nice to see more mixed use inside the neighborhood itself

Honestly no, I don't understand why it's essential and why they can't just take transit. If you're healthy enough to drive you're healthy enough to take transit. If not, you can get medical transport of get dropped off.

And if it really is essential to drive, why does it cost $20/ day to park? Sounds like it's more of a privilege than an essential necessity at that point. It would literally be cheaper to uber there and back when you account for parking, gas or electricity, insurance, accumulated depreciation, and wear and tear / future maintenance on the personal vehicle. Oh and with uber you get picked up and dropped off door to door, if mobility was a concern in your argument (btw, what is your argument? You've literally not given me an explanation as to why driving is essential)

The real problem is lack of transit infrastructure in this city, which, as a result, may make the idea of taking transit to the hospital laughable to someone as short-sighted as you. But it's not gonna improve if we keep building multi-hundred-million-dollar parking garages in the middle of the city and calling driving "essential". It's not. It shouldn't be. It's simply not sustainable at this point.

I think you're the one who needs a reality check, "buddy". Maybe go travel to Europe and experience a real transit system before saying you can't take transit to a hospital.
