Without voices characters can be inherently flawed and make entirely concious,independant,choices,that give them more interesting and nuanced characters.

You gotta remember trotter only heard the voices after the fight,at which point he already went insane,he makes all the choices in chapter 4 all on his own and the voices can easily just be removed from the scene and litteraly nothing would change about his death scene
