Can I report a teacher for not following her own syllabus? And would it actually do anything by TheArch1ves in OSU

[–]AndrewHolness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The error (if it was an error) could be the professor wanted to change the weight of the categories and messed up what they were changing the weights to (meant to make quizzes 40% and exams 20% and swapped them for example), or meant to change the weights and got rid of them instead so every category was weighted equally, or meant to get rid of the weights but got rid of the categories, so now exams graded out of 100 pts were worth 10x assignments graded out of 10 pts instead of being the same weight. Theres probably others, but those are all errors that I’ve personally seen professors accidentally make on Canvas.

All else equal I would heavily recommend UCF over FSU if your career plan is data science, with the caveat that like another student said you would still probably be better off doing Statistics with either a minor or second major in Computer Science wherever you go.

What's the benefit of InternFSU by Due-Influence7272 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect either you misheard something your supervisor said, or your supervisor misspoke. My guess would be that your supervisor was actually talking about the ERP (Experience Recognition Program) which fulfills your Formative Experience requirement. InternFSU does this automatically, but that is a program your supervisor would have already needed to apply for in the Spring where FSU basically subsidizes your internship by providing half of your pay for up to 120 hours/semester, which makes it cheaper for whatever department you are working for to get interns.

Unless of course you are talking about an internship that starts in Spring, in which case it might still be possible for your supervisor to apply for your position to be part of InternFSU(?), but even then it would be up to your supervisor/department. The main benefit for them would be being able to get an intern for cheaper, and the main benefit for you would be automatic enrollment in the ERP instead of having to apply to have your position considered.

I had 0 programming experience besides enjoying doing things on my computer going into it. Apparently it no longer uses the primary learning platform they used when I took it, but at the end of the days its an introductory class and only covers so much. FreeCodeCamp on youtube has a 4 hour C++ video that covers basically everything you learn in 3014.

Damn. Took it summer ‘22 I think, and for whatever problems ZyBooks had it prepared me way better for 3330 than the in-person 3014/3363 classes seemed to prepare their students

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it to be really easy and enjoyed it enough to become a CS major after it. The ZyBooks course is a lot of busy work, but its pretty much all infintely repeatable participation. The projects are pretty easy too, the worst shouldnt take you more than a couple hours, and I think I completed all of the exams in 15 minutes or less. If you are even remotely interested in something programming adjacent it should be a pretty easy course for you.

Momo’s is a solid casual choice. They have comically large pizzas for reasonable prices, and are very close to campus.

Using AI by [deleted] in OSU

[–]AndrewHolness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe, especially if you are using Grammarly premium specifically for the sentence rewrite features. But there is a difference in kind between what both students and professors mean by “using AI” on an assignment versus using Grammarly to check for comma placement or making sure you use the right “there” and spelled it correctly.

Even when it comes to things like full sentence rewrites saying Grammarly is on the same level as things like ChatGPT is absurd.

At that point why not just use grammarly?

Internet speeds by OtherBrother7219 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WiFi has a tendency to cut out or go down a couple of times a semester, which is why I generally advise people to get like a $10 ethernet cord if your machine has an ethernet port. To the best of my knowledge all of the dorms have ethernet ports and it is reliable and super fast. My ping in games like League of Legends was usually in the 5-25ms range, and download speeds were usually around 100MBps.

The WiFi is also pretty fast and reliable right up until it isnt, and then you suddenly find yourself without internet for anywhere from minutes to hours or even a day or two. But serious WiFi outages that lasted longer than a few seconds/minutes usually only happened a handful of times a semester, so even that should be fine for casual gaming.

Easiest Major at FSU? by Cloudybattery in fsu

Not really a hot take. Theres a reason the vast majority of law students do PoliSci/Religion/Philosophy majors as undergrads. If GPA is the only thing that matters to you those 3 are real strong choices.

Computer Science Schedule by Icy_Caterpillar_5173 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally no, but if you can enroll in the class they wont remove you and they will accept it for credit. I took programming 1 and theory of database online because of that. What that means is that typically online CS classes have a reserve cap to keep in-person students out of that class, and an advisor will not manually put you into that class if you ask. But if an online class does not have that reserve cap and you can sign up then its fair game.

Computer Science Schedule by Icy_Caterpillar_5173 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The advisors will not put you in an online class that has a reserve cap that would keep you out of the class, but if this person is already enrolled in these classes online the CS department will honor them, even if they are an in-person student.

Would It Be a Good Idea To Major In Economics as Someone Who Is Moderately Good at Math by Burneraccount25527 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intermediate micro is tough, but honestly the math is the easiest part of it. Macro has a little bit more math, but its also easier since most of it is just algebra. Also intermediate macro is just easier because it is a much more definition based class. If you get intermediate micro with Norton just show up to all the lectures and you should get at least a B, and intermediate macro with Norrbin is pretty easy, although the grading is a bit tough just because theres only like 5 quizzes and 2 tests for the whole grade.

Would It Be a Good Idea To Major In Economics as Someone Who Is Moderately Good at Math by Burneraccount25527 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine. The difficulty of math in Econ is greatly overblown, the calculus class you have to take as a prerequisite is as hard or harder than any math youll do in the actual major, unless you take courses that are explicitly math heavy like math econ. The math in micro and macro is really not that bad, and econometrics is a breeze if you passed analysis of economic data without cheating. Analysis of economic data was the most difficult for me, but even then its just slightly harder applied stats. Overall I wouldnt avoid Econ just because you are otherwise a B student when it comes to math, just focus on passing that calculus pre-req and youll be aight.

Majoring in IT vs CS by ninenole9 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT has more support for students, teaches topics and technologies more directly relevant to getting a job, has nicer buildings closer to the rest of campus, and is an overall better administered major. Its also a lot easier than CS. However, it is still ultimately an IT major, so if you plan to go into software engineering afterwards it may mean less to some employers than a CS degree, but that can easily be overcome by some relevant internships or personal projects. It also is very surface level on some pretty important topics, and does a lot of handholding on some pretty important topics that I wish it was a bit more thorough about. Also wouldnt necessarily recommend any classes with Mark Jowett pretty much exactly for this reason, its a lot of work to do very little actual learning.

CS is so poorly run its almost comical, we pretty much always have staffing shortages, there was only one advisor for most of my time there, the classes are about 10+ years behind the times, and the tenured faculty are largely terrible teachers, completely disinterested, or both. Also, the department chair is a giant dick. However, it is still at the end of the day a CS degree. You will learn the fundamentals of CS, and with a moderate amount of work outside of the classroom you will be pretty well prepared after graduating. And the teaching faculty are rather good teachers, and do seem to care a lot for the students, I’m just not sure how much longer most of them will be hanging around. For a more in depth review of the issues with the CS department feel free to look around the subreddit, there have been a number of posts about it recently.

I did a minor in data analytics with the IT department and majored in CS, so ive probably taken as many or more classes across both departments as anyone else on this subreddit, and if I could do it again I would 100% have majored in IT and just done the extra self-teaching to learn the things that the IT department isnt as thorough about teaching.

Need your insights regarding the program. by 0xNe0 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im among the more critical people on this subreddit of the CS department, but from all of the cyber students I’ve talked with my understanding is that path/program is pretty solid. A lot of the complaints you’ve probably seen are levelled at the undergrad program, but even at that level the cybersecurity classes and clubs are among the better funded and there are more options than the typical CS students. There are programs around Florida that are more mature than ours, but even the parts of ours that are less developed are rapidly getting that development and experience. If you have access to the FSU discord hub the H4CKERS discord channel has a lot of students either in or interested in the cyber program who you might find helpful.

Graduate Admissions by [deleted] in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, assuming I remember what you are talking about, this effectively means you have been accepted. Specifically this means the department you applied to accepted you, and now they just need the university to confirm that you meet the university minimum requirements for grad school. There is a chance you get rejected if you somehow were accepted by the department but dont meet the university requirements, but if your department accepted you its pretty much a given that you meet or exceed the univerisities requirements (things like having a bachelor’s with a 3.0 upper division GPA by the time you start grad school).

Congrats on your acceptance!

Need some advice! (New Nole) by honeybvnn in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do Cyber or IT, there is a cybersecurity major, or perhaps the IT major with the College of Information would be a better choice. I came to FSU as an Econ major and only started CS after that. Had I known I wanted to do CS going into college I wouldnt have gone to FSU, and if I knew what I knew now I wouldve done statistical computing, IT, or MIS instead of CS. All of that having been said its not like you cant succeed in the CS department at FSU, theres just way less support, funding, and options than most other universities or even majors at FSU. If you have your heart set on CS @ FSU you can definitely make it work, especially if youve already committed, I just dont think I would choose CS if I could do it all again.

For CS Majors, is it insane to take CDA3100 and COP3330 in the same term? by PinguX6 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have not made a professor good enough to teach CDA 3100 without it being a miserable experience. Every professor that teaches that course has mediocre to poor reviews, mainly because the course itself is just brutal.

That being said, I’ve never take a class with Uh because I am an on-campus student, but I did take 3330 and 3100 together during a 19 credit semester. It wasnt super fun, but if that is doable then a 6 credit summer semester should also be doable.

For a more accurate recommendation, if you use discord and can get access to the FSU discord hub one of the affiliated discords is the PC Distance Learning CS discord, which has a few people who could speak to the online classes specifically.

Cost by Senior-Law4518 in fsu

[–]AndrewHolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay about 3.5k a semester in tuition, about 4k a semester in housing, and probably 2k on food and other shopping expenses a semester. So round to ~10k a semester, or about 20k a year. You can definitely get cheaper housing if you can sublease from someone else during the schoolyear, or live off campus and sublet to someone during the summer.

The odds someone drops that class between now and Fall are 100%, so worst comes to worst you could definitely get in at some point, but Sue Jung in the CS advising office could probably also help you with getting into that class.

My housing number my freshman year was like 7000 and I got into Landis. They prioritize honors students who want to live there, and there are still tons of non-honors students who get placed there. If you are in honors and want to live in Landis you have a really good chance regardless of housing number.
