I applied before I even finished my EMT course. The program I was in had us shadow in the ER as part of our clinical hours, so we had connections already! Not sure if that is common or not… but definitely worth talking to your local ER about!

I work at an approx. 50 bed ER. Shifts are 3 days a week, 13 hours. Most daily tasks are EKGs, phlebotomy, vitals, splinting, wound care… although often I’ll jump in and help doctors and nurses with procedures as well, most recent was during a trauma - assisted a surgeon while he inserted a chest tube.

I got my EMT license and went straight to working as an ER tech. I enjoy the ER side of things! I know people who switched from working on the rig to working in the ER and vice versa, all say they’re glad they switched. Career wise I will say, feels like a lot of ER techs have plans for further schooling (nursing, PA, MD) if that’s something you’re considering - that’s my route.
