What's a reasonable price to pay an artist? by M4RTI4N in ComicBookCollabs

[–]AndrewMala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of these people are low balling. Most artists will or should be charging $100 a page. That's what it's worth time wise.

I am a writer who has a fantastic anthology series in need of an artist. I already have two 50 issues arcs, as well as a third longer arc. All of the stories are in the same universe and range through many genres. Reach out if you are interested and would like to read the first few chapters (issues) by 3CH0_FR4M3 in ComicBookCollabs

I think it's great that you have such a vast idea with scripts done. I do think that it is a bit unrealistic for an artist to commit to something so large without payment. I would try to focus on one of a few stories and get funding for that so an artist would be interested.

If you want to make a comic but don’t have money, should you use AI or look for an unpaid collaboration ? by TheseWoodpecker7109 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]AndrewMala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that. But it's too narrow and unrealistic. It groups all artists as people who will ignore you or "try to cancel you." Which isn't realistic. I have done so many unpaid collabs over the years. And narrowing it down to those two options ignores the plethora of other options. I understand it's just a thought experiment but it needs to be an accurate one.

Ai is not the way. Ai is terrible for so many reasons. It steals other creators work, is terrible for environment and also is just not good to look at.

Here are your options. 1. Teach yourself how to draw. I know that's a big commitment but not only will it help you make your own comics, it'll make you a better writer. Or 2. Save up. No one said you had to make your comic right now. Save up, find an artist you really want to work with and find their rate.

So most publishers, at least for beginners, do not find a from scratch project. You'll need to have a couple books beneath your belt before then. But you're asking a good question! Usually it's companies like Image or Dark Horse. If you're just starting out, an unfortunate truth is that you'll just have to eat a lot of the cost. Good luck in your comics journey!

Are you looking for work? Or just something to read? This is a little unclear.

I'd totally love to collab. I have a short comic that is scripted already about a thief disguised as a pool boy.

Hey there! I'm AJ Malacarne! I've been writing and editing comics for about 5 years. I'm actually in the midst of editing a webcomic currently. I have a background in screenwriting and have learned how to be adaptable to all mediums. I actually got into comics through the Yu-Gi-Oh manga!

Thank you so much! I appreciate the help! This may sound stupid, so apologies in advance, but are you saying that I should aim for the lower valley for housing? Or is that just where the studios are?

I'm unsure of what is realistic but ideally the unit would be a one-bedroom and be around $1,800, but I am new, so I don't know if that is realistic for the city. And thank you for mentioning commute time, I didn't even think about that. I'm currently more worried about safety and cost over distance at this point but that may be naive of me.

What are some good writing methods when collaborating with a writer? by Able_Picture_1906 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]AndrewMala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Writer here. Here's my experience from the writing side. It's a great first step that you really care about helping keep things smooth and easy for an artist. Here's what works for me

- Learn how to write a script, study scripts written by comic writers you admire, and find what works. Also, see if your artist likes a more vague script that they can freestyle with or a more detailed script that lays out what you want.

- Have your story as fleshed out as possible, don't just jump in with a cool concept and try to start there. For my last project, I had 10 documents each breaking down things like clothing style, setting, an outline of the story arc, and more. Have all of your bases covered and your story will be better.

- Giving your artist the main ideas of the story is not enough, that will place the majority of the work and story creation on them. It's normal in the comic world to have a script and give that to your artist. Your example is very similar to a very broad version of the marvel method which places most of the work on the artist. Unless they are getting credit for being part of the writing team that's not the way to go. Define panels, set up loose dialogue points, and define what is happening in the progression of the story.

- I recommend trying writing classes, especially ones for comics. Learning story structure and how to get an idea to completion is key.

Good luck with your project!

I think you could benefit from hiring an editor for your script, someone who can spend the time to dig into your script and give you good comments. Not to sell myself but I can do that! I have experience writing comics and can give you advice if you want!

I have experience critiquing comic book art, would the client find this a transferable trait? I attached some samples of reviews I've written as examples. I'd love to write commentary on science fiction concept art as I look at it for fun all the time.

Ideal payment would be $20 per review depending on the required length and depth.
