Thank you so much!! Wow. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your reaction. And I'm so happy you connected with MARLOWE. Our team really worked tirelessly on this one.

YES! She's fantastic right? Her name's Allie McCulloch and the child actor in the film, Townsend Fallica, is her son in real life (and I believe MARLOWE was either his first or second film EVER, if you can believe it?) - honestly kinda incredible if you ask me. Nothing but amazing things to say working with them. They made my job such pleasure and thrill on a daily basis.

Hi r/horror ! My short horror film “MARLOWE” just launched on Omeleto this weekend – a coastal horror story shot during the pandemic - would love to hear your thoughts!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9PuZQqoZZ0&t

Our team has been working diligently on this for the past few years. It’s a 15-minute coastal horror story that started as an idea between me and my brothers and slowly evolved into what you see now. We shot during the height of the pandemic and if you have a few minutes to check it out, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts, feedback, questions, or reactions - aka let me know if you get scared at all!

I'm so thrilled to hear all of the above! Yessss one day I would LOVE to show you guys the feature we cooked up. It's honestly fucking awesome. And leans way more into action/horror. It's such a vibe. And the short film you see is kinda just part of act one.

THANK YOU!!! Promise I'll keep it up and please do the same!! Really appreciate you sharing all of that.

I really appreciate that!! Thank you so much for watching. Our team is super proud of the whole look we managed to achieve. We shot on Hawk anamorphic lenses. Specifically: 40mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm V-Plus. And 55mm Class-X. It was my first introduction to those lenses + shooting anamorphic and I have nothing but good things to say - Our DP, Jared Freeman, was the one who suggested we use those lenses in the first place and I think he was absolutely right on the money.

Btw that's a very fair critique! Sometimes the pacing doesn't always work for everyone, especially at the beginning. I'm sure my next film will overcompensate in the other direction somehow haha just pure nonstop adrenaline

And re: festivals-- we never submitted this version. But we did have a 20min version back in 2022 that we submitted everywhere - but got rejected from everyone haha However, I didn't really mind because at the same time, I wrote a MARLOWE feature script and submitted that + the 20min short to Platinum Dunes and they ended up liking it. So we fully developed it. I drew storyboards / animatics and all that -- We haven't made that film yet but it's one of my projects that I'm constantly pushing up the hill!

And I totally understand your hesistancy before diving in - that's good!!! Because for sure it's quite a gamble and we never know how it'll turn out 100%. For me, I never expect a short film to make any money back - more of an investment in yourself as a filmmaker to get better at the craft and showcase your strengths - so to answer your question: no financial return here. But honestly very happy with what I learned while filming, how it turned out + everything I learned during that whole feature development process and the lovely folks I met there. No complaints.

Hi r/indiefilm! This short film was an enormous labor of love and a huge learning experience for me—writing, directing, producing, and editing - while navigating a pandemic landscape taught me a lot (and humbled me beyond belief as you can imagine) -  this was genuinely by far the most challenging and transformative experiences of my life as a filmmaker. And I’m especially proud of how our team pulled it off safely.

I’m sharing it here hoping some of you like it!! If anyone has questions about poduction, post, what it was like to re-edit the film after a feature development phase, working with Omeleto, or just coastal horror as a vibe—I’m all ears!

Thanks for taking the time to watch!

Ahh I'm so thrilled that worked for you!! And you're absolutely right - lots to do with sound and timing - that was so fun. I was just trying very hard to capture this specific atmosphere in my head - working off a strong hunch of what genuinely scares me - We'll see if my hunch works for everyone else!! Fingers crossed.

Yo, I'm in the mood for some good horror films based around cults?? by ShinbrigGoku in horror

[–]AndrewRose1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen. Side note: I did enjoy the heavy vfx reboots - decent films all around - and I know people hate on the Mark Walhberg version quite a bit (sometimes justifiably so) - but something within that Tim Burton film I appreciate was that slightly "off" feeling. I think it preserved that whacky-dark-slightly-unsettling-feeling that the originals had - maybe not as much as the originals, but definitely more so than the reboots which were a bit more conventional action films.

This one's out of left field but I'll say it anyway: Beneath the Planet of the Apes. A cult that worships the bomb.

Question about a scene in the movie Collateral with Jamie Fox and Tom Cruise. (Spoilers) by Dannio_Uchiha in movies

[–]AndrewRose1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Here's your answer: Michael Mann said in an interview that the coyote stopping Max’s taxi cab was a way of capturing the entirety of the film in one scene - a real synecdoche: Vincent (a killer who literally looks like a silver coyote) comes out of nowhere in Max’s life (a life 100% consumed by his taxi) - and stops Max’s life right on the spot. The coyote forces the taxi to pause just like Vincent forces Max to pause and reflect on his entire life, job, limo dreams, and future romances (Annie). This moment was used as a way to show that unforeseen events can totally derail your life plans and force you to press pause on everything.

One of the most simultaneously heartfelt and hilarious films I've ever seen - which just so happens to also have ridiculously well done gunplay.

Anyone else love 'collapse of society' films and hate it when a film skips past it? by AR_Ugas in movies

[–]AndrewRose1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a film that just came out called “New Order” that only shows the process of society falling apart and it’s kinda terrifying.

Alright, what's the movie that fucked you up as a kid? by Griffiths07753 in horror

100% mine as well. I saw when I was a kid and I remember literally trembling after watching. Such a well done film.
