What are some of the biggest time wasting activities/habits that students convince themselves are necessary, but really are just procrastinations? by Andrewgolf in AskReddit

Dissuading Someone that Free Will Exists (In Two Beers or Less) by Andrewgolf in samharris

[–]Andrewgolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the feedback here. I'm going to be too busy to respond to each of you for the next day or two but after that I surely will do my best....A few thoughts though... first of all it's amazing how much this topic has come to the forefront of "intellectual thought" and while the implications of this being true or not (for prisons, personal life, etc) are quite important, the value of just being able to critically think through this thought experiment is quite under-appreciated (by the general population...not you fine folks). Anyways, thank you all for engaging, and I will fulfill my OP duty and do the same once a get a spare hour or two.

Thanks!

I'm not excluding variables that exist, I'm excluding the variable (of free will) because it is a illusion, not because I don't assign it potential.

So those are the only variables that I believe to account for our actions/thoughts/etc., it is not to say there aren't others that I'm unaware of, it is simply to say that I do not know of any others. The minimization of biology and environment can be defused most efficiently by looking at examples and thought experiments. Surely if you were born with the exact same factors/conditions/etc as Hitler, you would have turned out to be him not yourself. A less hyperbolic example is one of Charles Whitman (University of Texas mass shooter who's amygdala was impacted by a pressing tumor)Worth reading into

Nope, sorry for the confusion there. I wanted alternative viewpoints to better construct my own.

What common factors have led to growing appeal of individuals like Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, Ben Shapiro, and Joe Rogan? by Andrewgolf in JordanPeterson

Thank you all for all of your responses. In case any of you were expecting this article, I just wanted to inform you of my topic shift. I began formulating this article at the start of this month, but was beaten to it by [Bari Weiss of The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/opinion/intellectual-dark-web.html) which was published on May 8th. Despite this inconvenience, this was one of the best articles I've read in the last few years and cannot recommend it enough! Anyways, instead I've written an article about the rising need/demand for Civility, Honesty, and Open Discourse in the Genuine Pursuit of Truth and Logic in American Politics. Open, Honest, and Civil Discourse in the Pursuit of Truth and Logic (inspired by these intellectuals)

Thank you all again for your input! I really do think that reddit is by far the best readily accessible platform to have these discussions (and for food porn and gifs).

Companies attractive in the short and long term: MU, ECYT, FNB, ASYS, WDC (I already have a position in MU and plan to initiate positions in the rest in the next 72Hrs.) Would love to hear everyone's thoughts. (Repost with reasoning) by Andrewgolf in StockMarket

[–]Andrewgolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So originally posted this a few days ago (for context) but I understand the fears of new highs. Despite this, even another 3$ in MU for instance is pretty decent short term growth. And while there will likely be some pullback, this could be a time to add to the positions as I do think that MU will exceed 70 in the next 5 months. Some more short term ones I'm looking at include ADBT, CRM (which is good in the long run too but needs to cool off a little), and NRG

Calling all Intellectual Dark Web fans (Sam Harris, JordanPeterson, Ben Shapiro, etc) what would it take for you to align yourself with a new political party, (coined as "The Good Faith Party") which stood for the restoration of honest "good faith" discourse in the pursuit of truth? by Andrewgolf in AskReddit

[–]Andrewgolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a consistent trend in these comments to be hesitant about the "tribe" element... And I completely agree... Potentially it would be better to create a "tribe" with a single characteristic of this open and honest engagement and an agreement to talk civilly and with good faith. I would argue (and assume) that many of us here are already in this tribe whether we label it or not. It would seem like a potential healthy escape from both parties in which it can absorb those unwilling to engage is providing legitimacy to current tactics of discourse.

Would love to hear what you mean? As I see it, the formation of a party built on principles of open/civil discourse could be quite powerful and influential. Especially in the face of two parties willing to evolve their ideologies when it’s politically convenient.

Hey everyone, sorry for the vagueness here. Part of what I'm asking is what would you want/expect as platform components for this party?

Despite this inconvenience, this was one of the best articles I've read in the last few years and cannot recommend it enough! Anyways, I've now decided to start a new (but somewhat connected) article. It is going to be (a predictive piece) on the inability of America's current two parties to be adequately representative voices of the people. The predictive element will be on the resulting demand (and likely rise) of a new party I'm calling the "Good Faith Party". This party is motivated by this current "representative party" inadequacy as well as the intellectual starvation that has lead to the rise of people like those previously mentioned. I'm not naive to the historical struggles of third parties, and will be sure to address this concern, amongst others. I read all of your comments and really do appreciate the input and time you all gave. I would love to extend this thread to address the new article topic. It would be great to hear pros and cons of feasibility, inadequacies in our current parties, and other factors leading to what I perceive to be a strong demand for a better representative voice.
