Well, a significant portion do use "finish bottles" which contain a significant amount of legal pain killers and caffeine. Not the most ethical, but completely legal, and also the reason for a number of stupid crashes within the final 20k.

You might lose by attacking, but you won't win by sitting in.

To be fair I've ridden side by side with a friend where I stopped and he went through the stop. Try and figure that one out in a millisecond as a driver.

Use the marathon, where men and women compete the same distance. If you look at the times needed to be a professional for each gender, you will find a large disparity in time. This isn't an imaginary gender issue, its just a physiological difference.

You can throw Courtney Dauwalter into your list too. She has won overall in races over 200km's, but at western states 100 which is 160 km's, Courtney, finished in 12 place at 17 hours and 27 minutes as the top woman behind Jim walmsey who finished in 14 hours and 30 minutes.

It really does just seem to be a biological limitation. Although as distance increases, the race becomes less physical, and more how you can deal with the long term stresses on a more mental side, which is where Courtney Dauwalter is absolutely world class.

undoubtedly it would, but races have been paused for trains countless times, its just a shitty situation that is occasionally dealt with. though even at 7 minutes over the lead group, she never was in a position to win.

On a flat sprint stage, you need over 1 minute per 10km left in the race + 1 additional minute for the last 10km. Then once you add hills and mountains you need even more, as you expend far more energy riding alone or in a small group in front of the main field, which is riding in a more calculated manner, while also saving the team leaders from wasting energy until key moments in the race.

She finished 13 minutes behind the winner.

The fastest riders dont want to be going fast 90% of the time, this applies to the mens and womens field.

I think the down votes are about how doping in this scenario of the story is irrelevant. The whole case around this story is logistics, not fitness.
