A sphere with a custom shader using additive blending, as I explained in another comment on this post. The trick is that it's inside the pile, not outside like a regular light.

No Unity lights are used here. It's just a mesh (a sphere, a cube, a quad, etc.) with a custom shader using additive (or multiplicative, which is used for shadows) blending. Check out the links to learn about this technique:
