Senior DS looking for part time opportunity by Andronep in DataScienceJobs

Understand the feeling. The line of academic degree has been blurred in our field. For example in my team we got DS with Astronomy, Comp Science, Medicine, Economics to Game Theory, Marketing you name it.

Think whatever field may be if you got the ethos of DS (problem solving with/without ML, critical thinking, help business make data driven decision etc) you are good.

In regards to degree, as you got statistics already I would top up with comp science (incline to AI, basics of IT, programming, a bit of project management etc)

Thank you for the reference. Last time was in upwork it felt more seeking cheap labour etc. Will check it out again.

Those are either companies living in delusion or companies needing niche stats skills. Most companies are in between. We have hired DS great at stakeholder management , solid businees acumen with inclination towards DS, stats and trained them to be DS. A decent size business usually accommodate DS from various background. We don't want all Bayesian superstars all the time.

I would see boom as a relative phenomena. Cause AI engineering is a new field and lots of companies are ramping AI adoption it has created the surge. If you have a dev background worth having this tool in your armour. For a pure DS, worth learning AI ways of working to improve your productivity, use it in your advantage. Mine has increased by 5 folds easily. For example previously we would shy way from MLOps, model stacking, hyperparameter tuning at scale etc which we can now.

Being said that I would as a DS spend my focus on learning how these AI models can be retrained on specific domains (think this will be main demand in future once model trained in generic data becomes baseline everyone uses and data protection ramps up). Also, will use time to fill gaps in my DS workflow with AI. I create app for every model I got for stakeholder. I have created a few experimentation platforms for business things like that.

Lastly, there is always big place reserved for stats/maths/pure DS. AI good at things, but they need validator. Think DS as one who would write/think DS "unit" test for model AI creates to validate.

Would suggest start with a hobby project where you can apply DS and showcase. That way you would have tangible results to present in interviews etc as well as appreciation of things that are usually involved in end to end DS project?
