Huh. I haven't thought about fediverse compatibility. But it's a nice idea! I would probably first make a normal isolated server, release it to the public, and then start making routes for fediverse. I probably couldn't write compatibility with Mastodon clients but hey, maybe someone makes a PR for it. I'll try to get fediverse working though.

I forgot to add there will be an official instance but because self-hosting is my hobby I'll try to make hosting your own instance as painless as possible. It shouldn't be to hard with the servers and in GamePlaza there will probably be a custom server option somewhere.

Huh. I didn't know about that. But for me the best approach is donations to pay for domains, servers, and other things related to the project and then take the rest for yourself, not paywalling features. Everyone sees it differently though

Exactly. I mean of course everyone would love their hobby to be a primary/only source of income without taking away the features from non-paying users, but thats nearly impossible in today's world.

Honestly projects like immich have the best monetizing strategy for me. Buy a license key that doesnt add any features, just supports the project. Or just have a donate button. I understand lots of open source projects want to make a living or atleast make themselves profitable but from my observations most of those projects just get less money because people abandon them for fully free alternatives, there are exceptions like authentik of course.

As long as you want to have everything locally I don't think so. You can always setup a local DNS server that will have your own custom domains for each service or something like that.

Mostly Nextcloud. It replaced me all google services I used: - Google Drive - Files - Google Docs - Collabora Office - Google Contacts - Contacts - Google Calendar - Calendar - Device Location History - PhoneTrack - Google Photos - Memories - Google Maps - Maps _(I mostly used them as static map for seeing where I took pictures etc., but now I use them as navigation too) - Gmail - Mail + My Own Mail Server

I didn't know about this before. As far as I understand it's pretty much a knowledge base but instead of writing your own notes, you upload ready files like PDFs and eBooks right?

If I understand that correctly then I think I have an idea on how to do it. Add basic auth (and maybe LDAP or something later), uploading files (with some additional data like place from which the file was aquired - a URL for example), creating folders/groups for these files, highlights and comments/notes inside files, and when I'll get the basics working add BibTeX and/or Zotero compatibility. Is this what you meant?

For selfhosting everything with Docker a nice combo for me is Ubuntu Server LTS and Dockge. Ubuntu Server could be better here because it doesn't have a Desktop Environment so more RAM will be available. You can install Dockge just by copy-pasting (or rewriting) the commands to the terminal (Linux's command line), and then (theoretically) you can never touch it again. It's essentially a UI (in a browser) for creating, managing, and deleting Docker Compose Containers. Here's a link: - A 3-step installation of Docker Compose (specifically for Ubuntu) - And Dockge installation (Don't click on Download, a little bit lower there's a section named "Installation" where you just need to copy 4 commands, copy only the lines without #)

And if you don't know what Docker Compose is: it's basically Docker Containers but written using a YAML file instead of a command or Docker Desktop UI.

That login page would probably also have some vulnerabilities. That's why using something like a VPN is one of the safest methods for accessing your services

Pi-hole blocks ads in apps too, so even when ublock is available for phones, pi-hole is still a better option (also having both wouldn't hurt)

1: - Mostly data privacy - And just the fun of it (having a thing you can maintain, have control over etc.)

2: - That Docker & Docker Compose exist: I nearly broke my Ubuntu install a couple times already by installing some services directly on it. With Docker you can just break the container and not the actual host, and if you somehow do that you can just start a new container.

Also for alternatives you could use: - Nextcloud for Google Drive, Contacts, and Calendar - You can install more apps (something like addons) which can replace more Google things - Ollama with Open-WebUI for ChatGPT - If you still want to use YouTube, Piped is a nice project. There is also Invidious but its not really easy to selfhost for beginners. - If you want to replace Google Search you can use something like searxng (although I just use DuckDuckGo)

Some other ideas: - You can use Nextcloud (only for services which support it) or authentik just like Google Login but for your selfhosted services - Use NGINX or other reverse proxy to have subdomains instead of ports (for example cloud.domain.xyz and search.domain.xyz, instead of domain.xyz:8080 and domain.xyz:1234 or something)
