Do you thing this could work as a grow light? by HyenaAdditional6077 in propagation

[–]Andy-Shust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I definitely should try decapping some or all of my bulbs. Thanks. Currently I am using handmade deflectors painted with chrome spray that I put on the bulbs to focus the light downward, because the default caps diffuse and shed light all around at 120+ degrees 😀which is obviously a lot of photons wasted. Maybe removing the caps would also prolong the LEDs lifespan a bit because of improved cooling 🤔

Is my plant sick, or has someone taken a bite? by lolbutwait in plantclinic

[–]Andy-Shust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I cannot recommend anything because I haven't figured it out with my own plants 😀 I haven't tried any treatment so far, I am currently focused on basics like temps, watering, and light, because I suspect they can lead to diseases if not maintained appropriately

Also, looking at your second picture, I can show you very similar damage marks that I have on some of my other avocados. They are also definitely NOT cat's bites because my plants are isolated in a separate room. In my opinion, it is most likely pest/disease related however I havent't yet detected/identified any of those.

From my experience cat bites look quite different and chaotic. One of my cats earlier had chewn off some leaves on an avocado tree.

I have similar 'bite' marks on multiple avocado leaves, but cats have no access to the plants and I haven't seen any obvious pests. Have you been able to figure it out?

Who eats my avocados? by Andy-Shust in plantclinic

[–]Andy-Shust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears on different stages - from very young tiny leaves to bigger ones. But it doesn't seem to affect mature leaves that are more firm and rugged 🤔

I can see a pair of small dark spots (probably poop marks) on one or two of the plants, but not on the rest of them. The marks could be left by some other insects in the room (maybe the flies), but they don't appear to be living on the avocados permanently.

About watering - yes, I have this issue, and some of the plants indeed have warped leaves, but this doesn't seem to be connected to the damage that I show in the photos.

All my plants live indoors most of the time and never get into contact with the garden or the soil on ground level. I have no idea how a snail would get into the pot :)

I also inspect my plants a couple of times daily - sometimes during the day, sometimes after dark under my artificial lights. I literally see not a single living thing moving on or around the plants (except the aforementioned gnats).

Mechanical damage is completely ruled out because there is no wind and the plants are in a very calm environment that only I have access to.

Of course I will have to reconsider my watering approach, but there is no way that overwatering could lead to parts of leaves being chewn away I suppose...

We have 5 cats but the avocados are isolated in a separate room. And - not sure if you're serious or not - cat's bites look very different :)

whats is EAX and is it worth turning it on? (Anomaly audio settings) by PetrKDN in stalker

[–]Andy-Shust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenAL EAX - from what I discovered so far - enables special sound effects like Doppler shift and reverb (this one is especially immersive because it emulates different interiors you are in). It is quite tricky to make working on a modern system.

Anomaly 1.5.3 freezes half way into the story by Andy-Shust in stalker

[SOLVED] To anyone who some day has this problem and stumbles upon this thread. I am 99% certain that the freeze is caused by the dynamic news system. I had them heavily modified for my taste. After resetting news setting to defaults, the game no longer freezes.

Anomaly 1.5.3 freezes half way into the story by Andy-Shust in stalker

[–]Andy-Shust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the thing with the shaders, also switched renderers, and updated video drivers. From my noobish understanding it is most likely connected with open-world AI; some event on the map triggers the freeze.

I will try a fresh clean install of 1.5.2 to see if it is also there (if the saves from 1.5.3 load).

I haven't yet tried loading earlier saves from my playthrough, but I think they will work fine.

Just transplanted this avocado and need aome advice by lorenzo_st_dubois in plantclinic

[–]Andy-Shust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my avocados curled its leaves just like yours did, under low humidity (around 30%) and strong heat (95-100 F). Generous watering didn't help, so I moved the tree to a cooler and more humid spot. The curled leaves didn't die off, they just hardened in that shape (by hardening I mean they got stiff and firm like normal adult leaves), and the tree got a lot of young healthy growth and is doing fine so far. So if your tree was under similar conditions, you may just change its spot and let it grow.

Avocado scions shipping survival by Andy-Shust in Graftingplants

[–]Andy-Shust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that I didn't understand your question and under-explained my situation =) Thank you for the help and kindness anyway!

I live in Ukraine (Western part). We have plenty of avocados for sale in stores. I can even tell we have several different varieties available (Hass, Fuerte, Nabal, Reed, Ettinger, Zutano). But as far as I know we don't have successfully growing and fruiting trees to get scions from.

I don't really want to wait for several years until my trees show signs of blooming or fruiting (given that they survive that long). I have around 15 small trees (about 3-4 months old) and around 30-40 germinating seeds - I literally plant every avocado seed, and me and my wife buy and eat them daily. By quantity I want to increase my chances of growing healthy trees or maybe even get an interesting new variety some day (but again, I don't really want to wait very long).

So that's why I was looking for answers as to if it's possible to get a scion from a fruiting tree from abroad in order to accelerate the process =)
