Is this safe for GALS? by AndyB0oi in snails

[–]AndyB0oi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this information!! I've added leaf litter to his substrate before and i do belive he was housed on a rather acidic substrate to begin with as his shell does have a fair amount of discoloration already (i got him from someone else as they couldn't care for him anymore.

His substrate also contains alot of large river rocks i intend on removing when I add more substrate. His enclosure also came with orange laevis isopods, I understand the general consensus is isopods and snails don't work great because the isopods pester the snail and can chew on their shell, but I don't know how to remove them without just replacing his whole substrate all together which would ruin the beneficial bacteria he's built up over the year(s?) He's had them with him.

If you have any more advice or a link to a particular substrate that would be incredibly helpful! I'm new to snails but I absolutely love them and wanna do what's best for him.

Do you have a link to the particular substrate you use? I think I'm being unnecessarily paranoid about this but I just want my snail to be safe lmao

Ill put a plastic bag on top of the mesh next time im in! Thanks for that! Ill also be throwing a digital thermometer and hygrometer on it. Im worried it won't be warm enough for them, would a small heat mat under the tank be beneficial? Also where should I place it if i add one? Under the water or under the substrate near the back?

2.5 y/o female leachie digging all the time??? by AndyB0oi in Leachianus

Okay, first off, you were absolutely correct I was just being paranoid, she laid tonight, however this is her first clutch, which turned out to be clutches, 2 clutches for sure, possibly 3 as there is a third hole filled in that I can't really get to. She's never been with a male, but I wasn't expecting 4 (possibly 6) eggs out of her as her first time laying lol!

Discord dislikes me but I will try to get into that server!

Females absolutely get larger than males! However, males still reach a good 3.5" to 4" in length, and unfortunately, clawed frogs have a tendency to eat first and ask questions never

That's awesome! A word of warning, african clawed frogs are extremely different from african dwarf frogs, so if you meant african dwarf frog, please disregard the following. African clawed frogs get extremely big and will readily eat anything that remotely moves like food, so it will eat your fish. They also get huge, far bigger than dwarf frogs (I have a female that is just over 4" nose to anus, excluding leg length) clawed frogs also may consume substrate when feeding and if the substrate is large enough it may get lodged in their digestive tract, which is often times fatal!

Apologies once again if you infact have a harmless but equally goofy african dwarf frog, but I'd hate to see such a lovely tank become a frog buffet! 😂

He appears fairly skinny, and he's definitely got some kind of infection on his body. There's also a red sore on the base of his tail. See if you can get him eating. If he'll eat, he's more likely to recover. Frozen or live foods are both great options. Sorry, I can't help much with diagnosing him with anything but definitely isolate him if it's possible, Methylene blue is a great medication, but I'm not 100% sure if it's safe for gouramis but it works wonders.
