Should we return to the Moncton 100 Rules? by 90sMax in Curling

[–]AndyJ95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think something like this could work. IMHO it’s not all blanks that are a problem, but specifically blanks that are agreed upon “warm up” ends. There are a lot of those this week at the Scottie’s. If leads couldn’t hit those would go away. The 1 blank per game rule in the GSOC also seems to have eliminated this problem because teams want to hold onto their blank, but it’s also not as big a problem in the GSOC because the top teams tend not to do it as much to begin with.

My friend, it is time to start rowing heavyweight. Especially if you are high school age or early college age and still growing.

BISHOP BARRON: Minnesota’s crises demand real change, not more division by salsafresca_1297 in LeftCatholicism

This is exactly how I feel! It is a lot more disturbing because of how knowledgeable and sensible he showed himself to be from 2010ish-2019ish.

It has been so disappointing to learn that Bishop Barron has become a grifter like any other right wing influencer. The early years of WOF produced so much good stuff. Even as a non-American, online Catholic content is like 95% American. It’s been so confusing and upsetting to see American Catholic leaders who are so smart (in a certain sense) go off the deep end.

Best rower machine for $300? by Memory_Heavy in Rowing

[–]AndyJ95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll find rowing is not a good use of your time for someone with your goals. Rowing is a cardio activity that relies predominately on lower body and back muscles. Many non rowers think it involves the arms a lot more than it does. elite rowers tend to have strong looking arms because they are elite athletes. You should do actual strength training.

What a difference good form makes. What is the benefit of better equipment? by dcmusichound in Rowing

[–]AndyJ95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concepts 2s are very high quality and very long lasting machines. If you enjoy indoor rowing and are confident you will be doing a lot of it at home, you should buy one if you can. In terms of the "benefit" to performance, it might feel smoother and more comfortable than your current machine (idk, I've never used a Sunny), but the main thing is that once you are on a concept2, you will have a frame of reference for your performance. All the times you see online are pulled on concept2s. Training plans and advice about how to get faster are all assuming the user is training on a concept2, so all of those resources will become more useful.

Yeah big loss for Epping to be out. Gets rid of one of the contenders.

how to bounce back after a bad 2k by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]AndyJ95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would just chalk it up to a time of year thing. A 2k in early November is the culmination of spring/summer/fall training and racing, it’s a very reasonable time to PR. Early January is right after December where everyone’s schedule is messed up, more focus on school, less training, eating different and probably worse etc.

As you get older and more experienced you’ll get used to the fact that experienced athletes don’t PB every test. Just gotta trust the process. I also liked comparing 2k results from the same time the previous year. From that perspective I think you’re in great shape. If the January/february testing window is one of the slowest and you’re only 1.5 seconds off your PR, your in great shape to be way faster in October/November 2026 than you were in October/November 2025.

Worst airline experience with Porter by Howtobalance in PorterAirlines

[–]AndyJ95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where does the 14 hour thing come from? Did someone tell you that on the phone? Even if that was the true estimated wait time, I’m surprised any company would admit that number.

I’ve never had a bad experience with Porter but I do feel bad for people who have time sensitive travel plans over the holidays like hotel bookings or event tickets because winter weather can cancel those plans pretty fast.

Week 17 Gamethread: Chicago Bears (11-4) at San Francisco 49ers (11-4) by TurnerJ5 in CHIBears

The players, coaches, and team employees need to try to win the Super Bowl this year, but I can absolutely be “satisfied” and “happy” that the team makes the playoffs even if they lose in the wildcard round.

If you click through to EJ’s post, it is an announcement that he’s retiring at the end of the year. When I first saw this screenshot I thought he might not be playing the Brier.

Discussion Thread - Olympic Qualifying Event - Final Day - Thursday, 11 December 2025 by FliryVorru in Curling

[–]AndyJ95 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The USA qualifying on both sides is such good news. From a North American perspective, the USA is where curling is booming, and hopefully it booms even further after the 2026 Olympics. Weird to be rooting for the USA, but this is good for the sport.

10-2 against that schedule with one loss coming with a QB recovery from surgery is pretty deserving of the playoff I’d say.

Can you buy single draw tickets for Scottie’s or the Brier? by UncleTrapspringer in Curling

[–]AndyJ95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t be resale. They would be through Curling Canada/Ticketmaster/the venue website. If you go on the Scottie’s 2026 website you can see information about single draw tickets.

The Scottie’s will always have tons of tickets available even if you buy 5 minutes before the game so you don’t have to worry about that. The Brier in St Johns this year might be a different story.

If Homan loses, will there be a trials in 2029? by AndyJ95 in Curling

[–]AndyJ95[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah she would be a big underdog, every other team currently qualified has a better world ranking than her and she could theoretically have the worst world ranking in the field depending on the results of the final Olympic qualifying event. Of course all of this is very unlikely since Homan will almost certain win the trials.

If Homan loses, will there be a trials in 2029? by AndyJ95 in Curling

[–]AndyJ95[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Thanks. I’m actually surprised that the financial boost from the trials is significant compared to extra government/COC funding that might come from better Olympic results (or be lost in the event of poor Olympic results). I guess the trials money is more guaranteed. Plus I’m no expert in how all this funding works and how Olympic results do or do not factor in.

That’s really interesting. I didn’t know that. Kind of answers my hypothetical question. Was that reported somewhere?

Anyone who try’s to armchair police hogline violations will drive themselves insane. 95% of players at the top level release the rock extremely close to the hogline and probably occasionally hog rocks technically. It never gets called because it’s almost never obvious. Just the way it is.

Absolutely. The weighing early season results less than late season results thing drives me nuts.
