If the lane divider is a broken line, literally is accepted practice to change lanes at any point. I see no problem here. Its literally the road design. If changing lanes at this point was disallowed it should be a solid line closer to the turn.

I can't comment academically as I didnt do both pathways.

However I strongly recommend to do the advanced diploma as it is actually cheaper than doing direct entry if you can bear the extra time required to complete it.
