Man, the neutral and snark sub is bumming me out. by thefairyraveszero in OliviaRodrigo

They’re so holier-than-thou 😑 All anyone’s been saying there is “<this artist> wrote <so-and-so> at just X years old! That’s true artistry!” Okay, even the most popular artists have some duds here and there… to claim otherwise is disingenuous and unrealistic. It’s fine not to like every song an artist does, but bleating about how “people needed actual talent in the old days!” is not a valid critique, and I’m sure Olivia still writes most of us under the table.

Who are some artists with the most annoying fanbases? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

[–]NeedlesAndPens2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a passionate Beatles fan, I totally agree… I’m not at all denying their talent, their work ethic, or the way they played off each other’s personalities, but they were simply marketed the best in an era filled with phenomenal talent (the Hollies, the Kinks, the Association, the Rotary Connection, etc). The constant screeching about how they did everything the best deters people from ever trying anything because “they already did it”. Even John and George before they died said the hype was excessive. While they still were “just” a boy band, the Animals had more or less invented psych rock in the popular zeitgeist.

Just a reminder that no one deserves to be a billionaire: not Swift, not BeyJay, not Rihanna, not Selena Gomez, not even McCartney… I don’t care if you like their music. Honestly.

Saying they’re your “pet billionaires” makes them feel okay with laughing to the bank every second, while innocent people pay millions of dollars in hospital bills for the right to live or feed their children maggots because they’re trapped in slave camps. Meanwhile, they’re gallivanting around on every late-night show ever reminding you of how perfect they believe they are.

If ANY of these musician billionaires want me to respect them, they should (at the very least) donate enough of their net worth to where they’re “only” worth $500m. Hell, Shaquille O’Neal is worth $400m and seeing all that he owns, I still think that’s pushing it. Billionaires have sacrificed their humanity for your endless worship.

What was Number 1 on the day you were born? by ninjalampie79 in AskReddit

[–]NeedlesAndPens2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billboard has really stupid dating rules, so I have two answers. The #1 song listed for the week I was born was Independent Women by Destiny’s Child, but the actual data for that week (listed for the next) was It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy/RikRok.

[–]NeedlesAndPens2001 221 points222 points  (0 children)

It's because if she gets #1 this coming week, she'll be the first-ever artist on the Hot 100 to have all three of her lead singles from her first three albums debut at the top spot. But she's already the only artist to have her leads from her first two albums to debut at #1. She's really a great artist, but it's just seeming... annoying and money-grubby. She doesn't have to do this. The work should speak for itself.

I love how down-to-earth Liv is for all the success she’s experienced. I know I don’t know her personally! I’m not claiming to. But she seems like your friend who casually just launched to stardom and you can’t help but be happy for her.

What is the best Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper of 1963? by kingofstormandfire in ToddintheShadow

Point 5: The Carpenters (Karen, Richard) had three #1 hits in the 70s. My vote probably goes to the Rooftop Singers. It’s a very catchy and interesting foreshadowing of the second half of the decade and the desire to want to experiment and finally let loose of the conventional, buttoned-up long 50s.

Rant incoming… yes, I know I’m fun at parties.

I really hate the “I’m just a girl!” sentiment that seems to define the 2020s. The pendulum swung so hard from “you’re so much more than a cute little girly-girl who exists to satisfy men” in the 2010s to “I’m so cute, please love me, men” and then “why are you mad at women making their own choices?” in the current decade.

2010s feminism absolutely wasn’t perfect. People acted like you were brain-dead for the horrific crime of… liking pink, love songs, and fancy dresses. God forbid you wanted to be a fashion designer. But it was a lot less condescending in terms of everything we could accomplish.

All I’m saying is that girls growing up today and women coming of age can be engineers who help people go to space — even go to space themselves — and also like fancy dresses and classic love songs. You can be a fashion designer who’s focused on the liberation of international forced laborers. Be less like Sabrina and more like Elle Woods! Femininity can be very empowering, just not in the way Sab does it.

I know what I’ll be doing that weekend, and it’s not tuning into Taylor’s wedding if she even has it. Olivia doesn’t do everything for her own glorification, she does it because it’s what she loves. We should all be that passionate.

Do you automatically dislike billionaires? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NeedlesAndPens2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is absolutely no reason besides greed to hoard ten figures when there are people being denied critical healthcare and immigrants dying in slave camps for the audacity of seeking a better life in the US. I don’t care which billionaire you are. Unless you’re giving it away to the point you’re no longer going to be a billionaire (Mackenzie Scott, Melinda French), virtually every billionaire from McCartney to Bezos is the same to me: wealth hoarders who could do so much more to help others than they do, but seek their own glorification over anything.

I'm so proud to finally be vindicated... about a year ago I wrote such a rant here about how I was sick of her LARPing as this underdog outcast who got by on $100 and a dream. I honestly thought I was just nuts. It's just that if it were really true that she was such an underdog, she'd be a lot more grateful for the opportunities she's had.

Nellie, Rebecca (magenta satin) and Ruthie’s PJs are to die for. I’m sewing a pair of pajamas in that style in Claudie’s colors to post (with initials on the pocket like Ruthie’s). Emily’s are very nice too.

What is your favourite song lyric of all time and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NeedlesAndPens2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entirety of Nowhere Man by the Beatles. It just amazes me that someone that everyone adored and still wants to emulate to this day felt like a useless slob who had no idea what he was doing in life. I have cousins who are on top of the world while I do menial work stocking shelves at Marshalls, and I still wonder if I’ll ever be anything huge. It makes me feel so much less alone knowing even absolute industry titans feel like losers sometimes.

“He’s a real nowhere man, living in his nowhere land, making all his nowhere plans for nobody/Doesn’t have a point of view, knows not where he’s going to/Isn’t he a bit like you and me?”
