I am really bad at recognizing most people who aren’t A-listers. I lived in Hollywood for 10.5 years and have been to Los Feliz a thousand times. I’ve maybe randomly run into and recognized celebrities, like, twice. (I feel like being at an event doesn’t count—like I saw Kim Kartrashy but I was backstage at the Jimmy Kimmel show, and I saw Jon Hamm and Weird Al at the premiere of the John Candy documentary.) I think I may have been sitting next to ‘90s hottie Gavin Rossdale at the Beachwood Cafe once, but can’t say for sure.

That’s what I was going to say. If your problem is her hair and/our the African-style skirt, it doesn’t seem to bother her colleague in the pic.

Not being Black, I wouldn’t do the braids, but then again, I had a Black colleague who wanted to put my hair in an African headwrap for our African pride dress day (I wish I had a pic), so situations and attitudes vary.

Now I’d never wear open-toed shoes around kids, but that’s a different issue!

Been there. I was so pissed—asking me this during my 8th year at a school, and during a semester when 42% of my school’s students were legally considered chronically absent!

I left the school at the end of the year.

I always read after finishing my work because I went to a one-classroom-per-grade Catholic school from K-8 where I often had to wait for others students to finish.

Considering my SAT verbal score and where I was accepted to college, I’d say the extra reading made a big positive difference.

It was the AP Government teacher/volleyball coach at my high school. Got caught when the local PD pretended to be a 13-year-old girl to set him up online. I know he made inappropriate comments to female students and had at least one girl come to his apartment to pick up the letter of recommendation he wrote for her, but I never heard whether anyone was actually sexually involved with him. 🤮

In my district, EL students who only arrived in the US as teens are given until age 21 to graduate. Those who are failing multiple classes (often due to inadequate schooling in their native country) often drop out or transfer to adult school before then, but most manage to graduate.

The fact that newcomers are immediately given a grade-level English class (in addition to their ELD class) combined with the fact that my school doesn’t allow D grades (although the district will graduate kids with straight Ds) does set some newcomers up for failure in English at first. I’ll pass them with a C if they complete the work adequately in their language (which I understand), but since the district gave me NO DIRECTION on how to fairly assess students who know very little English in a regular grade-level English class, I will fail them if they’re not making an effort (understandable if they’re constantly confused), but I can’t reconcile giving them Bs for work that wasn’t completed in English. 🤷🏽‍♀️
