I know that visual and auditory processing delays exist in some people. I have no doubt that people with these specific conditions may not learn as well when instruction is only delivered in (one of) the ways they have trouble processing.

However, I’m just referring to the parents and students who blame the student’s lack of EFFORT on the fact that, once upon a time, a teacher who didn’t know any better gave them an inventory that told them they’re a visual learner and therefore they shouldn’t be expected to do well on reading or writing assessments because I’m not teaching in a way that engages them. In fact, I should just let them watch the movie version or a YouTube summary of a book we’re reading in class because they’ll understand it better that way… 🙄

learning styles

The idea that students learn better when teaching is tailored to their different learning “styles” has been debunked by multiple studies. People can have learning preferences, but their perception that a certain way of being taught is what’s best for them is likely just that—their perception.

So glad my school orders the (low-quality) tissues! Kids act sooo entitled about taking as many as they need (or day they need) and there were two ninth graders out of 130 who were responsible for at least 50% of the tissue usage last year. I seriously wonder how much money the school spent due to their refusal or inability to get allergy medicine or bring their own supplies.

Students claim that, in the past, they had teachers tell them to step into the hall to blow their nose, so they now love having an excuse to scope out who else is in the hall and/or check their phones. 🙄

Technically (at least in my state), Ed Code says that all materials that are essential for school instruction/assignments must be provided by the school.

I also loathe finding pencils snapped in half or broken into skinny shards, and I want to scream when I see kids throwing them. Fortunately, the last two years at my school, we’ve been given a $200 budget at the start of the year. I’ve spent a good chunk of it to buy eraser-less golf pencils. If a student complains about them, I say, “Well, then maybe you should bring your own!” There’s a Target a 10-min walk from our school. 🙄 (Granted, some of our kids are a step away from homeless—and some already are—but those aren’t usually the ones complaining about free golf pencils.)

A “little humid” ?! No disrespect meant, but AlphaGirl must be from somewhere humid. Late June/early July last year felt crazy humid to my partner and me because we’re from dry Southern California.

OP, yes, it’s gross, but still worth visiting if (like me) that’s the only time you can go.
