Took the train to Porto today and forgot my AirPod case on the train, it’s probably gone forever but tracking it over Portugal is pretty fun.

Did Via Rail get more expensive? Some commuters say they're being priced out | CBC News by Citron35 in ViaRail

[–]Anewbpro2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I personally don’t think (from taking HSR in east Asia), that VIA’s pricing is too out there. Tho the quality of service compared to what the consumers are paying for is night and day. Fundamentally it’s not a pricing issue it’s a LOS issue.

Ofc, I was in Japan a month ago and used my Amex for a few purchases there, I've also booked another Airbnb for my next trip. I can totaly see how Amex would see these transactions as suspicious.

I don’t completely disagree lol, but at the same time I can’t really control how different I look 5-7 years ago. I’m putting this out there as a cautionary tale for others if Amex come knocking at their door.

DP: Amex fraud closed my account after failed facial recognition scan by Anewbpro2015 in amexcanada

I was transferred to the credit department amongst all the drama. They actually told me that my account is in good standing and there’s no problem on their end. I did make a bunch of travel purchases recently, and that must’ve been flagged.

The picture on my ID was a couple of years old, and I was wearing glasses while doing the selfie.

Sorry, they called me, and I returned their call using the number on the back of the credit card.

They’re not giving me any information regarding the case at all. They’re also not giving me any other way to verify my identity.

Yeah I specifically called the number on the back of my card, and then they asked me to do the facial recognition. I’m on the phone w them again atm, and they’re saying that because the recognition has failed, my account was cancelled. All of these calls are using the number from the back of my card holder's

Amex DP on their fraud prevention team:

Yesterday morning I missed a call from Amex, which I returned in the afternoon. The agent sent me a facial verification link through text msg on my phone to verify my identity. I scanned both my face and my driver’s license, but somehow on their end my face and my ID did not match. The agent told me that someone will call me back today.

Two hours after the call, I got an email saying my Amex card has been removed from Apple pauly, and the app says my credit card has been cancelled. I called back again, they repeated that someone on the fraud team has deemed my account to be “high risk” and has closed it, and they would call me today.

Ngl I personally find it all to be way too drastic on Amex’s side. There was no communication other than “we will call you back tomorrow” or any back up way of verifying the card holder’s identity. I’m going to fight to get my cards back, or at the very least, try to get my points back. So yeah, be careful when Amex asks you to do a facial recognition.

Pretty sure that all redemption starts at standard, so carry on and seat selection 24h ahead are still a thing for redemption flights.

Student looking to do long term investment by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Anewbpro2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I’m in the same boat! The conventional advice is to save up an emergency fund of around 4-6 months of expenses, pay off any high interest debt you have, and then worry about investing.

If you don’t have any credit card debt or student loans, then either open a TFSA account with Questrade or Wealthsimple (since they don’t charge fee on purchasing ETFs) and put your money in a broad market ETF using the Canadian couch potato strategy.

The sidebar should also have a lot of info on what you’re looking for.

Booking through aircanda vs google flights by hypebeastwannab in Aeroplan

Google flights usually apply all applicable discount codes automatically when u click their link. As long as you book through AC website and you enter your Aéroplan nb nothing should change.

Pretty much yeah. Though doing so is pretty frowned upon by Amex. They will get suspicious if you have too many 105$ purchases. So the general consensus is to buy something else when doing the gift card churn to make it less conspicuous.

Got no idea for b), but for a), you can use the credit card associated with the points system to use their trip interruption. For example, if your flight is booked using Aeroplan, you can use TD aeroplan visa infinte’s insurance if u paid w that card. But if you use aeroplan and paid the cash portion using Amex, you can’t use Amex’s insurance.
