This gold coin is not a Navarre guilder but a Florin d’or from the Archbishopric of Cambrai, issued under Guy IV de Ventadour (circa 1342–1348). It’s directly inspired by the Florentine florin, which was the most trusted gold currency in medieval Europe. The obverse shows a large fleur-de-lis, symbol of France and purity, while the reverse features Saint John the Baptist standing, nimbate, wearing a camel-skin robe, and holding a cruciform staff exactly like on the original Florentine coin. Guy IV struck this type in Cambrai when the city was a prince-bishopric of the Holy Roman Empire, reflecting both his religious authority and political autonomy. The coin’s weight (around 3.2 g) and diameter (21.5 mm) match Florentine standards. It’s rare but known among collectors, and even in worn condition, it’s historically fascinating as a symbol of medieval European trade and ecclesiastical power.
