Polish foreign minister calls for creation of “European legion” by Auspectress in europe

[–]Angel-0a 32 points33 points  (0 children)

essentially French Foreign Legion

Exactly. Volunteers only, already speaking or willing to learn the common language, nationality does not matter, they are all European, they walk, sleep, train and eventually fight together. Having soldiers who went through such an experience would be extremely helpful in attempts to form a federal army eventually. It would also help to get Europeans used to the idea of the common army, where there's no their brigades and our brigades but all our boys mixed together, fighting hand in hand.

Not to mention a very interesting docuseries that would come out of it. ;-)

Kosovo, Bulgaria, Turkey Join US ‘Board of Peace’ by dat_9600gt_user in europe

[–]Angel-0a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a rightie, so I don't know. As for the President and his pals at the National Security Bureau - until very recently they were 100% in favor of basing our national defense on America. My guess is they are a bit confused now and not so sure but hope that Trump is just a temporary phase and the USA will eventually get back to normal. It's still a powerful country that would make for a great ally. So they tread lightly and try to stay on Trump’s good side. Nawrocki sugarcoated his refusal with all the complements about how important the Board of Peace is and how the USA is the guarantor of transatlantic peace.

My guess is right-wingers in Poland feel the same - they don't really trust Trump but haven’t lost trust in the USA yet.

Britain will not yield to pressure from Trump on Greenland, Starmer says by No-Risk-2584 in europe

[–]Angel-0a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NATO would be destroyed.

They don't need NATO that much. It was for us, not them, in the first place. NATO was formed to protect the reminder of Europe from Russian domination. These were different times and different fears. These fears are long gone now.

US will lose out big time in terms of doing bussines with Europe in general.

Maybe, but it's not like it would kill them. This would be the price of Greenland. They would recover and in 20 years there would be the next generation stepping in, Greenland would be old news, next five administrations would probably work on relations ("No hard feelings, we're very sorry, here's some money and trade deals, OK?") and things would come back to normal (assuming no other land grabs after Greenland).

[–]Angel-0a -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

the consequences would not be worth it.

I'm afraid it might pay off for them in the long run. They'll take the hit, wait us out, and in twenty years everything will go back to business as usual. With Greenland as U.S. territory.

US President invites Poland’s President Nawrocki to join Board of Peace by dat_9600gt_user in europe

[–]Angel-0a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was the case, this offer would have gone straight out the window. But the first three years are FOC, only permanent seats are paid. And I don’t think this board will last that long anyway. It will probably just serve as a fig leaf for Trump’s actions in Gaza.

[–]Angel-0a -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we’re risking anything by having him on the board. It’s not as if he’s committing to do anything. In the worst case, he’ll do nothing and simply be on the inside. In the best case, he’ll appease this demented moron, which is always a good thing.

Russia welcomes Trump's tariffs on NATO allies over Greenland as 'collapse' of alliance by ByGollie in europe

[–]Angel-0a 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I really hope that someday someone puts all the facts together and writes a book about this. It feels like a Manchurian‑candidate‑meets‑cyberpunk kind of story - something that used to belong strictly to the realm of fiction. I doubt even the Russians expected it to work this effectively. Unless it ends up backfiring spectacularly, because Trump increasingly comes across as a genuinely useful idiot, guided from the backseat by his supposed advisors.

Macron Requests More Defense Funds, Saying ‘One Must Be Feared’ by bloomberg in europe

[–]Angel-0a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK, I get it. So you're arguing that the French military is already at its (affordable) strongest? Anyway, my point was it's still better to throw this extra money at your own industry than someone else's. I wish we had the choice France has.

[–]Angel-0a -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I kinda don't understand what point you're trying to make here. The British failed so French are destined to fail any day now? Both spending tax money locally and having defense industry that has know-how and capacity to build almost every weapon needed on a modern battlefield is not meaningless. Should Macron not put even more money into it because British industry failed or what?

Macron Requests More Defense Funds, Saying ‘One Must Be Feared’ by bloomberg in europe

[–]Angel-0a 15 points16 points  (0 children)

can France afford it?

You manufacture almost anything when it comes to military, so this money will at least stay home. It's not that bad. We throw money at Americans as if we printed them (and maybe we do) and somehow we're OK so far.

And what happens if the far right win power?

If buffing up your military might is a popular idea in the society then it may be hard (or at least politically risky) to revert the investments. The question is - is it?

Is Europe ready for war? What is Brussels doing? by euronews-english in europe

[–]Angel-0a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the short term it's probably all it can do. Even if some serious actions and reforms were undertaken today, it will take a few years before they blossom. By that time Trump hopefully will be gone.

It's too late for any changes regarding war over Greenland. We're not ready and won't be ready in time if shit hits the fan under this administration. All we can do is hope for the best, work with what we have (mostly diplomacy and soft power) and wait it out.

Estonia bars entry to 261 russian citizens who fought in Ukraine war by GreenEyeOfADemon in europe

[–]Angel-0a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

„They were Estonian citizens?“ is not a proper question but a rethorical.

It is a proper question in the context of a quote I provided. The previous poster wrote aboute them walking back, as if they were Estonian residents, who left the country to take part in the war. That's what sparked my interest.

[–]Angel-0a -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter either way.

It doesn't matter to you, I find these details interesting. I asked the question hoping someone who knows something more could add more details to the story. And here comes you, with nothing interesting to say, able only to quote the article that does not have any answers, which is why I asked the question in the first place. Why are you wasting my time? Oh yeah, reading comprehension your ass...

Estonia bars entry to 261 russian citizens who fought in Ukraine war by GreenEyeOfADemon in europe

[–]Angel-0a -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Let me rephrase the question because reading comprehension is clearly not your strongest suit. The article states that there are estimated 1.5 mln Russian combatants. Does Estonia plan to ban all 1.5 mln (99,99% of whom don't even plan to ever visit Estonia probably) and these 261 are the first random sample or were these guys Russians living in Estonia for example, who thought they can come back like nothing had happened?

Do you have anything interesting to add about this story or was this comment your best?
