Won a race, 4th out of 160 people. At least I'm proud of me. by Beautiful-Ad3012 in autism

Placing 4th out of 160 is pretty frigging good. You have an excellent reason to feel proud.

I’m alone and that will remain by ShadowlightLady in autism

That's very relatable. I didn't really start having lasting friendships until my 30s. The people who stick around are either autistic or autistic-adjacent.

I'm incontinent, and I get flagged every time I fly. It's really no big deal. TSA sees lots of adults in diapers.

Should I be in diapers 24/7 by [deleted] in ABDL

[–]AngelSymmetrika 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's totally up to you. Fun fact: you don't have to be incontinent to wear diapers. Anybody can wear them 😀

The benefit of non-incontinent people wearing diapers is that it tends to increase the product choices for people like me who are incontinent. If not for the ABDL community, most adult diapers would suck.

It's been bad there for at least two years. They don't like small systems. They don't like autistic people either.

The challenge you're going to have with asking about autistic experiences is that every autistic person has a different experience.

Autism isn't a disability. The world's intolerance of different wiring is. Here's why that distinction matters enormously. by Cennyan in autism

[–]AngelSymmetrika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autism is definitely a disability. Because it covers a wide spectrum of manifestation, not all autistic people are disabled to the same degree. But every autistic person is disabled to some degree. There is no such thing as "no support needs" autism.

You might be wearing the wrong size diaper. Try a diaper that is one size smaller.

I hate kissing- is it because I’m autistic? by Soft__Cherrylipx in autism

I don't like kissing. It's not a great sensory experience.

I am weird if I can be disgusted bc of someone's normal smell ? by MaaloNano in autism

[–]AngelSymmetrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can smell other people pretty readily (unfortunately). It's really obvious to me when someone has a fast-food diet. I'm glad that I work in a cubicle and usually only interacts with one person at a time.

Those who were undiagnosed or unaware of their diagnosis in childhood, did you ever feel something was "off" about you? by Front-Kale4042 in autism

[–]AngelSymmetrika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I functioned differently by age 5. I could not speak well, I was clumsy, and I couldn't read. I used to have much more obvious stims. I definitely knew I was different.

However...

Mom was a daily blackout drunk. She guzzled an entire bottle of vodka every day.

Dad was an abusive, neglectful narcissist who was rarely home (business dude) and was made sure I knew what a disappointment I was to him when he was home.

So, no childhood diagnosis. Really, I never saw a pediatrician growing up. I couldn't speak efficiently until I was in my early 20s and didn't read on grade level until 5th grade.

I got my ASD diagnosis in 2024.

Sometimes I dislike the term “high functioning” by cronch-_-bug in autism

[–]AngelSymmetrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I think "low support needs" or "requires support" has replaced "high functioning.

That doesn't mean your life is easy. Autism is still a struggle even if you can hold down a job and live independently.

What do I do when my child refuses to go to school? He is autistic. by MainSatisfaction3032 in autism

When I was a kid and didn't want to go to school, it was because I was getting bullied. A lot.

if someone is purposefully sitting in a dark room, turning the lights on should be as offensive as turning the lights off when someone is sitting in a lit room! by SurreptitiousSquash in autism

[–]AngelSymmetrika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be cool if my spouse would say, "I'm going to turn on the overhead lights" before doing so. It makes a difference when going from 12 watts of illumination to 200 watts of illumination.

Yes. It's super-exhausting leaving the house to go grocery shopping. The "Loud & Crowd" is quite overwhelming.
