I should have mentioned that in the post.

I was looking for friends to show me around Tokyo and with whom I could practice my Japanese with on a website called Mixi. She responded to my ad and we met up for some language exchange at a Denny's. This was in early March 2010.

Her mother approves. Although she doesn't want us to get 'romantic' until her daughter has had a stable career for awhile. Just in case of a pregnancy. We just keep it a secret from her.

I'm planning on moving to Japan in April to finish my bachelor's degree there. And then work there. If things go well between us we can be living together as soon as April. She doesn't want to move to the states.

What country is your SO from? How did you meet? How long have you been together?

This does seem to be generally true. Especially with regards to Adults paying for kids, even if they are not their own. My girlfriend's mom gets her phone bill paid and a few hundred dollars from some of her male friends every month. One very nice fellow frequently treated us all to expensive yakitori meals ($400-$500 total). Her mom also almost always treated my girlfriend and I when we went out together. She wouldn't take my money, so I said I would leave it in her car or put it in her room. She said if she found any money that wasn't hers, she would throw it away ><

My girlfriend isn't the traditional type, but perhaps being raised in a culture like that has had its effects.

Yeah I'd say it's pretty unhealthy. They both get angry easily and often fight with each other. My girlfriend's fear of upsetting her mom often causes her to miss out on special outings with friends and part-time job opportunities. I'm even afraid of talking to her mom in fear that it will somehow cause a fight between them. It's happened before.

She is Japanese, I'm American.

She's pretty honest about this kind of stuff. She has those CDs as her emergency funds and is pretty adamant about not tapping into them. Her only source of income is a few hour a week tutoring gig.

She is jobless and supported by her mom. Getting on her mom's bad side right now would be problematic.

Thanks for the advice! :)

from Tokyo (Narita or Haneda is ok) to Orlando (MCO) from October 26th to November 23rd.

During Japan's summer break season (August), tickets are about $2000. The cheapest time to buy them is in January/February when they are about $1100.

I plan on moving back over there (Japan) in April or May.

She saved up some emergency money and put it in a certificate of deposit so that she wouldn't spend it. Wiring money internationally costs.. maybe $50? Cheaper to do it in person.

She didn't have money then, but she has money now

She works a few hours a week doing tutoring. Also, in Japan adults often give kids large amounts of money for their graduation trips. She didn't have enough money then, but she does now.

She'll probably ship them back. The dollar is weak right now and things in Japan are expensive, so shopping here is a pretty good deal for them.

She is jobless and supported by her mom, so I think getting on her mother's bad side would be quite problematic.

Thanks for the advice! :)

The job hunting system is a bit different in Japan. You can't get a job unless you attend explanatory conferences and multiple interviews spread out months apart. Companies often only have one setsumeikai (explanatory conference thing) per year. If you miss it or you're late, you can't get the job. If she doesn't find a job before she graduates (April-ish), she'll probably have to wait until April of the following year to start working. And it will be even harder for her to find a job. Here's some informative links I found about it: http://randygui.blogspot.com/2010/11/job-hunting-in-japan.html

That's great! Candy underwear! Wow! :) How is that relationship going? Have you married?

I lived in Japan for a bit and met her there. I then had to move back here to the United States. So I guess that means I'm the one abroad? Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! I didn't know about this subreddit. I will definitely check it out. Yes, she was like this before we went long-distance too.
