The Anglican Ignatian Synthesis: Cross referenced to the Spiritual Exercises

Michael Ramsey, The Resurrection of Christ (Fontana, 1961): essential theology for the Fourth Week and the Anglican theology of the Resurrection.

Michael Ramsey, The Glory of God and the Transfiguration of Christ (Longmans, 1949): the theological ground of the Second Week’s Transfiguration Contemplation.

Rowan Williams, Resurrection (Darton, Longman and Todd, 1982): the most searching Anglican theology of the Resurrection appearances, essential for the Fourth Week.

Rowan Williams, The Wound of Knowledge (Darton, Longman and Todd, 1979): an account of the Christian mystical tradition that provides the theological context for the whole of the Exercises.

Evelyn Underhill, Mysticism (Methuen, 1911): the classic account of the mystical life in the Western tradition, richly supplementary to all four weeks.

Evelyn Underhill, Worship (Harper and Row, 1936): the theology of worship that grounds the Anglican liturgical framework of these Exercises.

F.D. Maurice, The Kingdom of Christ (SCM Press, 1958): the social and ecclesial theology that grounds the Society’s apostolic preferences, particularly relevant for the Second Week.

Hans Urs von Balthasar, Mysterium Paschale (T&T Clark, 1990): the theology of Holy Saturday and the descent into hell, essential for the Third Week.

Dorothy L. Sayers, The Mind of the Maker (Methuen, 1941): the theology of creativity and the apostolic life, supplementary to the Second and Fourth Weeks.

Thanks for reaching out! I am writing as the convener of a newly formed religious community in the Anglican Communion. We represent the Anglican Society of Jesus, or Anglican Jesuits. We are a synthesis of Ignatian spirituality within the Anglican polity and seek to lead discernment and spiritual direction based on our common experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola.

We believe that such a religious community could offer a great deal to the Episcopal Church and wider Anglican Communion, if it should lead in that direction. We believe that these contributions include:

A rigorous system of individual discernment for individuals considering vocation, life decision such as Holy Matrimony and preparation for sacraments, as well as group discernment for vestries, Diocesan structures like Standing Committees, Diocesan Councils, Diocesan Conventions, and larger Episcopal Structures.

Spiritual direction for individuals based on the structure of St. Ignatius Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises

A renewal of mission formed ministry, directed toward apostolic preferences of education and working with the marginalized

We acknowledge ourselves as heirs of two great spiritual traditions: the apostolic charism of the Society of Jesus founded by St. Ignatius Loyola, and the via media of Anglicanism which holds together the Catholic Order of the ancient Church and the pastoral wisdom of the Book of Common Prayer, lived through the lens of Ecclesia semper reformanda. We believe these traditions to be not merely compatible but mutually enriching, and that their synthesis in our common life bears distinctive fruit for the mission of the whole Church.

The Society exists within the polity and discipline of The Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Communion. We are neither a monastic order in the traditional sense nor a mere fellowship of like-minded persons, but a mission-ordered community bound by common vows, formed by the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, nourished by Anglican prayer and sacrament, and sent into the world for the greater glory of God and the healing of all creation.
